There are half a dozen or more of this class located in Albany, whose profits have been seriously affected by the order of the Postmaster General. One has grown to opulence by advertising that he Is the manufac ture of "love powders," which "possess the power of charming to your embraces the proud est beauties and the most intractable of the sterner sex !" These powders are sent by mail at three dollars a box. They cannot cost the manufacturer much More than three cents each. Ile assures the gullible that the use of one box is generally sufficient; but in rare instances a third must be resorted to. That, however, was never known to fail! The victim receives the first and second boxes in return for his six dol lars; but he never gets a return for his third investment. Ile might write fifty times to the love powder man, but he will receive no answer. Another sharper advertises that he is the manufacturer of bogus coin, which will puss for good even at the mint—a description of coin that will successfully stand all chemical teats and defy the !shrewdest "bank detectives. The rouse who would deal safely in bogus money sends five dollars to purchase some. lie receives in return ten dollars in good coin manufactured at the mint. The sharper is now out five dollars, but his victim. finding that the ten dollars sent him pass readily at a profit to him of fifty per cent, concludes to go to Work on a larger scale. lle sends fifty dollars, mid expects one hundred of the perfect - bogus" in return ; but ho hears no more from the coin operator, who by giving ten dollars for five dollars gains fifty dollars.— This fellow, it will be perceived, is completely secure from criminal prosecution. He does not deal in bogus coin stall, andhis victims dare not complain, because in doing so they would be compelled to admit to the world that they were anxious to operate in counterfeit money. Another advertises that for the moderate sunt of fifty dollars he will impart to any lawyer a secret that will. beyond all chances, enable him to win every suit, in which he may be engaged, whether of law or love. The charm consints in the possession of the eyes of a very rare Eggp• tiara fowl, which none can procure but dui adver tiser. Strange as it may seem, this fellow has caught some fiats and pocketed their money.— When asked what return he proposed to make to ono of his victims, ho replied that he would go into State street., purchase a spring chicken, rook and eat the meat, extract the eyes and send them to the wistful lawyer, and if they could see further Gum his vietinee eyes, of which ho had no doubt, he might win the suit ! These sharpers hear fictitious names, and 'hence all communicationgto.lbem are retained. They will be sent to the ded4 letter office. It may not be amiss to sty that the general order affects a few, in this city and elsewhere, whose business is deemed by the public compere vtly legitimate, but who, for reasons best known to themselves, have thought proper to conduct it under names other than their own The difficulty with regard to them is very easily remedied. They have only to abandon their aliases and their letters cannot be withheld,- t llama Argus ,V the 8(11. qe The Priew $ ISur Is FRANCE ARNIM) —The London nue. asks the question why France is increasing her army end navy, and it appears to regard the fact as one ominous of future trouble. It adds: It may he that the peculiar form of govern ment in which France has seen fit to Indulge ne cessitates some increase of the army for purpo ses of domestic repression, and we would much rather believe it so than suppose she is marshal ling her forces for some foreign war; but, if we grant that the army is increased for the purpose of insuring domestic tranquility, on what ground are we to account for the corresponding and co temporaneous argumentation of her fleet 7 The navy has always been a favorite force in England, because, among other reasons, it is a force which cannot readily be used for the purpose of coer cing the people. In France the same principle moot apply, and wo are at a loss to know for what paciffc purpose a large steam navy is being prepared. France has but few colonies, and those of inconsiderable extent. She has no large foreign commerce to protect, no refractory India to reconquer and reorganize. She has nothing to fear from a descent on her coastsfrom any foreign power. Why then, is France arm ing and augmenting her navy • -We have a right to ask the question; for, whatever' bathe enemy against whom the thun derbolt is forged, there is no doubt that these warlike preparation, in a time of profound peace tend to inflict upon us, in common with the rest of our neighbors, many of the Ml=ol - and miseries of war. If France will insist on - increasing her armfes and her navies, she forces us, her neighbors and her allies, to do the same. We have too much at stake within this little island of ours to be content to exist by the permission and on the sufferenee of any ally, however faith. fel of any—foreign Prince, however magnani mous. History warns ns against incurring the fate of those nations who have trusted the pow er of the sword in other hands than those in which they were content to trust their freedom. If France is determined to arm, we must either be content to lie at her mercy or prepare to arm to. If she increases her regular army we can hardly do lees thaneall out and embody our mili tia. If she insists upon increasing her navy, she forces us most unwillingly, from the barest 0011- , Aderations of prudence, to undergo the expense of a channel fleet. We would, then, take the lib erty respectfully to submit to the Emperor Napo leon that it is the sincere wish of this country to be his good friend and true ally; that to this end we have made many sacrifices, and are prepared to make many more; but be asks toomuch of us If he expects that he is at once to enjoy what ever power, support, or influence his alliance with England may giro him, and at the same time to inflict upon us by hie vast military and naval preparations a war expenditure which we are most unwilling to incur. and which casts upon-us many of the evils of a elate of actual hostilities. In polities many things apparently discordant may he made compatiable, but it is impossible that two powerful and neighborin; natiens can at the same time he arming again& each other and united in close alliance and cor dial friendship." AITAIIIN IN TUN SOUTIIWE , T.-WO learn from our friend, Mr. Richardson, who arrived in town last evening, that Gov. Denver, with the party of Free State men who accompanied him on the journey, has reached Lawrence, after a trip of nine or ten days through Lykine, Linn and Bourbon counties. Affairs there were in a very uoeeltled and deplorable condition. Farms were neglected, business sospended, and a party of fiftpthree Free State citizens guarding the Mis souri frontier from invasion. The Governor has taken the initiatory steps for the complete or ganization of Linn and Bourbon counties—which were never organized before—appointed a new and unexceptionable Sheriff (free State) at Fort Scott; promised to withdraw the troops station ed there, and to enroll, as Territorial Militia, the Free State volunteers in Lion county. Mont gomery and his men have laid down their arms, and in common with other citizens of all parties, have agreed to imbmit past differences to the grand juries, and to permit affairs to be "regu lated" hereafter only through the legal channels of justice. The prospects now are that there will be no more serious troubles In the South west.--LearentrorfA 27mrs. Ile is exceedingly popular and mach sought after; he relates agreeably taw is con siderable of a poet, some of his verses having obtained no little success under the Restoration. A few days since, he made the following recital, 'The Ring Charles X once presented me with a snuff box ornamented by his portrait and en riched with diamonds. Subsequently finding myself embarrassed for money, I went to one of the most celebrated jewelers in the l'alais Royal and said to him, preeenting the box,—•Will you do me the favor to take out these diamonds, re place them with false ones, and pay me the dif ference?' lie readily acceded to my request. A short time after, the artist who had taken the portrait of the king wrote to me, praying the loan of my box, as he had occasion for the model, fifty copies having been commanded by his ma jesty. I forwarded it to him, and, at the end of two or three months, I went to his residence to reclaim it.. But the painter—fortunately for me, as it subsequently proved—had confounded it with the fifty others for which it had served as a copy, and great was my surprise when, pressed again pecuniarily, I returned to the jeweler 'a to demand money upon it, to see him count me a very considerable sum. 'What! this picture so valuable as (hit,' 1 re marked. 'No,' was the reply, 'the value is in the dia monds.' 'The diamonds! but they are false ones.' 'Pardon, the diamonds aro perfectly pure and beautiful.' I returned to the painter's, but the fifty snuff boxes wore no longer in his possession. The king had distributed theta among a number of persons whom he desired to honor by a mark of his kindness. So that among the happy ones who fancy they possess a royal present, sumo one has my fake diamonds. lam really sore for him, but how repair the error?" Wusr or ma Cll o P 4 ?—That's the question now at tongue's end. We are satisfied that Northern Ohio never boro such luxurious crops since the Indian title was extinguished. Such is the information relative to this county and tiro adjoining counties. Such, too, is the testi mony furnished from the Western counties. There is no exception to this matter so far as grain crops are concerned, and it is impossible to tell which is rho best when all are as good as they can be. Fruit, as wo have before noted, is not answer- ing the early expectations. The truth is fruit made.a great Uwe, but much of it has blown ow. Cherries are not only thin upon the trees, but very imperfect, four out of five having been stung by the curculio or otherwise defective. Peaches we hope will do better as that fruit is not injured so readily by s sting as the smooth, thin skinned fruits. The crop of - apples will he small, and wo are sorry to bear this from the apple bearing region of Lako and other fruit counties. The Painesville Trl , groph says the apple crop will bo short, the trees eel full but the fruit has, very much of it, dropped and what is left is stung, so there will not be apples enough for a bite apiece.—Clerrland Herald. • Tue DICEENS SCAB:DA L.—As Mr. Dickens' statement is apt to be somewhat unintelligble to those beyond the reach of the gossip of London and the •literary world," we may explain that the fact, as we are informed, is, that Mr. Dickens has, by mutual agreement, separated from his wife, on the ground of incompatibility.'• The name of a young lady on the stage ham been mixed up with the matter—most cruelly and un truly, is the opinion, we hear, of those having the best means of observing and judging: indeed the arrangement itself is to a great extent a re futation of that part of the scandal tit the family, (eight in number,) the eldest eon re mains with his mother, but some at least of the daughters go with Mr. Dickens, and the head of his new home is a lady, a very near relative of Mrs. Dickens, We mention these facts to ex plain the allusions to which Mr. Dickens has thought proper to give publicity, and also, to do no in such a way as to prevent the transaction so dimly referred to being made the subject of inferences too unfavorable. VioLAT92I 09 COXIIDENCE.—We are ISO pes tered by our inquisitive acquaintance as to the modus operandi of Mr. Rarey, that, at the sac rifice of our words, and the risk of incurring a penalty of J.:5000 for a violation of contract with the illustrious horse tamer, we proceed to make known to the world the system by which the most vicious horse le tamed and rendered amiable and tractable. We will give the ease of Cruiser. Mr. Itarey, after some difficulty, approached the violent animal, and having es tablished a communication between them which eeemed perfectly satisfactory to the horse, Mr. Rarey proceeded to unscrew the fore legs of Cruiser, and to remove hie head. Having per formed these difficult operations with considera ble skill, Mr. Rarely then introduced himself into the interior of the animal, and remained there some five or six minutes. Ile then merg ed, and rubbed the horse's tail with a prepara tion of cold cream and cayenne pepper, replaced the head, re-ecrewed on ,the legs, and Cruiser the terrible was subjugated forever.—Punrh. One of the hard sort of people that we find sometimes, even in Chelsea, (says the Telegraph) was asked the other morning on the boat to sub scribe to some worthy object. “.1 can't," he replied, "I must be just before I am generous." said the one who made the request "only let mo know just before you are generous and I will try you again." fflituatral TILE BALANCE OF DIY !PRIMO STOCK of HEM 3 ihwurance Illerehants' Insurance Co. of Philadelphia.
