STnPMIXU <>r TUP liK:-r\rs P.\i,.\t , Fnth \v, Mao< ii PL—The camp was on the j aim ai an uarly hour this morning, for it was’ expected that Ouiram woulJ receive permission ; lo attact the iron bridgo at both ends. But Sir ; Colin Campbell, so reckless of his own life that I his staff are in continual apprehension, is chary, I indeed, of the life of any soldier under his com- i mand, and he would prefer using a thousand j shells, dear though they bo, to using up the raw- i ost of recruits. Wo have a powerful artillery. - It is not till the whole force of that army has been exerted that an assault on any position will be authorized by the Commander-tn-Cbiof. As we approached the Begum's Palace the enemy’s bullets, varied by n round shot now and then, came hissing overhead, and announced that they were still fighting in the front. Externally, all we conhl see of the Begum's Palace were some glittering domes, the cupolas and minarets of a mosque on the lcft, and the bulustrades around the fiat roofs of the numerous buildings inside. A high wall, forming thp outer barrier, loopholed at every inch, inclosod the building all around, but it bore frequent marks of our cannoD. In front oT this wall thero was n high parapet of earth, with a «teep scarp and ditch some fifteen or sixteen feet deep, and two small bastions with embrasures for two guns, which swept the ap proaches lo the place, or were intended to do so. The embrasures, however, had been bcatcu into ragged holes, choked up with sand and tim ber, by the fire of our guns. Just in front of us, within somo 18 or JO yards of the ditch, there was a largo hole iu the ground, caused by a mine which the Sepoys sprung when it was too late |to do them any good or us any harm. In the ditch itself (hero lay a heap of the dead bodies of the enemy, which our men were dragging out of the palaco ami dinging o\er the trench. The enemy had literally dug their own graves. As we crossed the narrow ramp of earth leading to the gate way, we could not but feel astonished at the small loss by which we had gained such a position. Along the front of this wall, in addi tion to the guns, there were loopholes for al least -J.nOO umskets, and it seemed scarcely pos- effect an entranco at. tho point where one portion offhe '.bid and of the Sikhs had rush e l through, with bayonets at the charge, on the astounded foe. Tho gateway to which tho ramp led was protected by loopholed turrets at the sides, and by a considerable fire from the walls of the place. The breach mado by our guns was on our leL of a gateway, but when our troops en tered. it was ouly to find themselves io front of a similar wall, directly under the fire of the enemy, who were concealed from them, at half pistol shot The only way of getting at the enemy was by a hole, miscalled a breach, and battering in the door by our guns, so narrow an I low that not taore than one man could entor at a time, and ihentmly by bending his head But to avail ourselves even of this mode of en trance our men had to struggle through the outer l-reaeli. or to clamber up the steep bank of the diieb. where impeded by their number> iu the narrow PpAce, as they made for the inner broach, they were held in check under the ene my'-; !’re till some of them forced their way in through the hrickod-up windows, which led them into -mall 'lark rooms filled with Sepoys. Held by such troops a* those who assaulted the place, the liognai'e Pala-'e had been Impregnablo to in fantry. Entering with difficulty through the suffocating breach, rank with hot air, gunpow der, And ..dead bodies, 1 passed into the first of the court yards, in which thk fight took place It was filled with exulting Uigblandcra. still Hashed with the heat of victory —Sikhs burn ing gold and silver tissue and lace, for the sake of the metals Uen. Lugard, scaled in the mid-t of them, wiu* busy giving orders to a group of officer'. How a man could have es caped who rntrred in such a fashion is beyond n. y c.'Uipreli**n ion But there were few elivin out! ht, for the apparition of these brawny sol diers alone unnerved tho hands of their enemies Many fled at once, and wero pursued and shot down in (he courtyards without offering resis tance. other > fired their muajtda or matchlocks ouce, made a wild thrust with tho bayonet, and ran also: others, surprised in boles and corners, fought with the ferocity of wild beasts One officer of the b-bl killed with hri own hand 11 sepoys, whom he fb<>» with his revolver or sa bred in the courtyard. Tho attack, which had been list 1 for v o'clock, did not tike place till l l p m , aud many thought that it would not take place at ftll last night, in consequence of the lateness of the hour Highlanders were rioting amid the mirrored and many-lustred sa loons. still filled with magnificent shawl-* and scarfs, and such valuable articles os the ladies of tho palaco were unable to carry ofl in their flight. Very soon every mirror was shattered to atom-, chairs of state were in fragments, and the |. hiss luetress dashed to the ground, so that the drops and crystals lay like a pavemeDl ><n (be floors Just turniugio il»e left, \v«» were ith..ui cnleriofr n c»mrt-yaril, wlieu an officer saiJ, “Mind what you nre al.om' Thera are some fellofra hid inside there, and one of them has just shot a sergeant of (ho '.Eld and a man of Ihe '.tilth." This is, a? as you will have observed, a inode in which our men frequently lose their lives in this odious warfare. Soon afterward 1 saw one of ihese fanatics -a fine old Sepoy—with a grizzled mustache, lyiDg dead in the court, a sword-cut aToaa his temple, a bayonet thrust through the occk, his thigh brokeu by a bullet, and his stomach eLshqd open, in a desperate attempt to escape. There had been five or six of these fellows altogether, and they bad either been surprised and unable to escapo, or had shut themselves up in desperation in a small room, one of many looking out on the court. At tint attempts were made to start them by throwing a live shell. The use of a bag of gunpowder was more successful, and out they charged, and, with the exception of one man, were shot and bay onoled on the epoi. The man who got away did so by u desperate leap through a window, amid a shower of bullets and many bayonet thruei- Such are the common incidents of this war. We went up to the top oflhe mosque, upon the left of the palace, but the fire from tho Kaiser- Laugh was too near and sharp for one to remain there without cover. From courtto court of the huge pile of buildings we wandered through the same sccues—dead Sepoys—blood splashed gar- Jen* groups of eager Highlanders lookiDg out for ihe enemy * loopholes—more eager group* of piundcrers searching the dead, many of whom lay heaped on the top of each other, amid the ruins of rooms brought dowa upon them by our cannon shot. Two of these were veritable cham bers of horror*. It must bp remembered that tho Sepoy- and matchlockmen war cotton clothes, many at this lime of year using ihickly quiUcJ tunics ; and in each room thcro weio a number ofr«a»aor7ju»ltedcotton coverlets, which serve as beds and quilts to tbenatlves. The ex plosion of powder sets fire to this cotton very readily, and it may be eoailly conceived how horrible are the consequences when a number of these Sepoys nod Nnjecbs get into a place whence there is no escape, and where they fall in heaps by our shot. The matches of the men, tho discharges of their guns set lire to their cotton clothing: it is fed by the very fat of the dead bodies; the smell is pungent and overpow ering, and nauseous to a degree. I looked in at such rooms, where, through the douse smoke, 1 could sec piles of bodies, and 1 wos oblige! to own that the hoirors of the hos pital at Sevastopol wore far exceeded by what I witnessed. Upward of three hundred dead wcro found in the courts of the palace: and if wo put the wounded carried off at 700, ws may reckon that Ihe capture of tbo place cost the enemy I,OUO men at least. The rooms of the building round the numerous courts were for tho moat pari small and dark compared with the great size ofcorridorsaud garden inclosures. The state saloon, fitted up for durbers and en lertainmoDls, once possessed some claims to magnificence, which were, however* now lyiog under our feet in the shape of lustres, mirrors, pier-gin' «cB, gilt tables, damask, silk and satin, nod embroidered fragments of furniture, marble tables, over which onemadc their way from place lu place with dfliculty. Tbo camp followers were busily engaged In selecting and carrying away such articles as attracted their funcy, shawls, cushions umbrellas, swords, match locks, 'tomtoms or drums, pictures, looking glasses, trumpets, but the moro valuable plun der disappeared last night It will bo long ere a Begum can livo here In stale again. Every room, and wall, and tower, are battered and brenebed by our shot. raoME&ADR wirn an: ja>ii:s outram. As the progress of a sap is not very interest ing, I was in no groat burry to return to our comp at tho Morliniere, odU gladly availed my self oflhe opportunity of reconnOitering the north sido of the city from the iron bridge which Sir James Outranks morning rldo afford ed us. If the old adage about early rising bo correct, that gallant officer must prove one of tho healthiest, wealthiest and wisest of man kind. It wasscarcelygreydawn whenbewasup and stirring, aud witi» the sun we wcro out on tbo road which leads toward the elty and can tonments of Fyxabad. The road runs through a large suborn which consists of isolated honses in wailed enclosures, thickly wooded and pro vided with pltwut gftrdeiu. Fer two milts or more we rode through this suburb, and I can ; safely say that I did not see a wall or a house ' which had potbeen prepared more or less fordo- ■ funse. Mostoflhewanßofhousosand ofenclosurea ; were thickly loopholed, and a determined ene- - my could only have been dislodged by the ef fects of heavy artillery and destructive and te dious street fighLing. The enemy had fled with out a struggle btforb < strain's force, and the road was oovered with their shoes and frag ments of clothing, which they hud cast off to fa cilitato their flight. At last wo came out ou a road at right angles to our route, nrul found our- . selves close to the iron bridge*. In order to preveut any attack on our position from the north, two nuns pointing toward the cantonments were placed so as to sweep the road, and one gun behind ihc trench bore on ; the bridge. Vi> dismounted aud left our horses ; under covtr. and then, led by Sir James, ran ; the gauntlet along tho side of the street tip to a ; house close to the bridge, from which a view could be had of tho opposite side. The enemy i iu the bouses at the otherside did not lose their j chauce, nnd their bullets went singing past us • sharply. The houses on both sides of the street ! were occupied by our men, English and Sikh.' who kept up a steady fire on every living object \ visible on the houstops and in the windows ofl the mansions and mosques along the other batik I of the river, which i« only thirty or forty yards across at this place. Looking through the bal- ] ustradcs on tho top of tho house, we could sec the inlrenohments in front oflhe MohteoMahal, ] or "tho Fearl,” and the enemy's batteries com- j minding the bridge Thero wero five dead Se- [ poyß on our eido of the bridge, and a number of living Sepoys at the enemy's side; their heads , were for a moment visible now and then over the ; parapets of their works. Behind them spread out tho vast extent of the Kaiserbagh, and its innumerable gilt cupolas, j domes and spires, its towers and fretted walls, 1 its long lines of windowed enclosures and spa- I clous courtyards: It was evident lhai we wero expected from ihe otherside, for the works of the Kaiserbagh, and even those of the Mohlcc Mahal and Mess-Ucuse, were turned toward the streets leading from the Canal toward the Resi dency Of the latier building, all that remains is one ruined tower, and the houses in (he neigh borhood bear numerous truces of the fierceness of cannouado which raged there during (hat grand defense. After a careful inspection, Sir Janies descended to the street, and suddenly gave way lo an uncontrollable desire to vitit a battery uq the bank of the river, which eouid only be done by crossing the street W'e were ordered lo remain under cover while Sir James sallied forth with Sir Hope Grant and t'ol.
