Mursell contained the following amusingbut in structive passage; The point to wniqh I have next to direct attention is manliness in speech. Thcro ore many young men who seem to con sider It essential to manliness, that they should be masters of slang. The sporting wont!* like its brother, the swell mob, has a language of its owa ; but thiß dog-English extends fer b«jond the sporting world. It comes with it* hordes of , barbarous words, threatening the entire extradi tion of genuine Englißhl Now just Ustcn for a moment to our fast young man, or the ape of a fast young man, who thinks that to bo a man ho must talk in the dark phraseology of eloog. If ho does anything on his own responsibility, he does it on his own “hook.” _ If ho sees anything remarkably good, ho calls it n “spinner, ’ the superlative of which is a “regular stunner.” If a mAn is requested tp pay a tavern bill, he is asked if he will “Stand Sam?” If he mocts a savage-looking dog, be calls him an “ugly cus tomer.” If he meets an cccontrio man, he calls him a “rummy old cove.” A senslhlo man is a “chap “that ia up to snuff." A man not remark able for good sense is a “cake”—a “flat’—a “spoon ’-a “stick”—“his mothor docs not know he is out.” A doubtful assertion la to bo “told Lotho marines.” An incredible statement is “all gam mon,” Our young friend never scolds, bat “blows ap” never p&ys, bat “slumps up”—never finds it difficult to pay, but is “hard on”—neTer fefels fatigued, but is “nsod up.” He has no hat, IjnV shelters his iiead beneath a “tile.” He wears no neckcloth, but surrounds hia .throat with a “choker.” He Usee nowhere, hot there Is some place where ho “hangs out.” He never goes away or withdraws, bat ho “bolta”—ho “slopes” —ho “missies” —ho “makes himself scarce”— ho “walks his chalks”—be “makes tracks”—ho “cuts bis stick” —or what is the same thing, he “cuU his lucky'” The highest compliment you can pay him is to tell him that ho is a “regular brick.” He dues not profess to be bravo, but ho prides himself on beiug “plucky.” Money is a word which he bos forgotten, but he talks a good deal about“tin,”and “theneedful,” “the rhino,” and the “ready.” When a man speaks, he “spouts”—whon ho holds his pcaco, he is down a peg or two,” and “made tosingStnall.’ Heoalla his hands “paws,” his legs “pin*.” To be per plexed, ia to be “tluramaxed" —10-'bcdisappoint- ed, is to bo “dished”—lobe cheated, is to be “sold” .c. ourianoiir. -•-to be cheated clearly, is to be “done brown ” Whatsoever is fine, is “nobby"-*whatsocver is shabby, is “Beedy”---whatsocverlB pleasant, is “jolly.” He says “Blessed if he does this," “blowed if be does that,” “hanged” if he does the other thing; or he exclaims “My eye!” “my stars!" If you asked him whichVerc his stars, ho would bo “tlumraaxed.” Then he swears “By George—-“by the piper”—on select occa sions he selects “iho piper thaUplayed before Moses.'' Important Decision Toiciunc Ltycou—The Women Ahead.—On the Bth of July ISiV., in the town of llockport Mass., some two hundred of the women of the place got together, pro ceeded to the different liquor ehops, entered them by force, and destroyed the conlonta of kegs, demijohns and bottles. There was a great time in town that day, and thefemalc mob was not interrupted until its work bad been ac complished. Tbo story went tho rounds of the papers, and tbo pluck of the women was loudly extolled by the Malne-Law Journals. After a lime, however, tho affair was forgotten, and nothing has been heard of tho parties who per formed the feat, until, recently, ono of the ladies appeared in Courl, vicariously for the rest; os defendant in a suit brought by one of the suf ferers. This suit was decided atSalemoo Mon day last, Chief-Justice Shaw presiding, in favor of iho defendant, —on tho ground that individu als are justified in destroyinga nuisance. After hearing Judge Shaw's charge, the Jury speedily found a verdict. Tho parties to the 9uil wero James Brown r?. Stephen Perkins and his wife. Mrs. F. was ono of the two hundred. The sordid spirit which has been evinced on his pari through tho whole business, is utterly contemptible The man who will thus turn the hallowed associations of a great kinsman—and that kinsman Ucorgo Wash ington:—to purposes of private speculation, is no man. Tho terms ho ex acted al tho final agreement for the sale were such as oven Sbylock, the usurcs of Venice, would havo doomed unworthy of his profession. For two hundred acres of land, which, disas sociated from the name and without the ashes of Washington might possibly be worth fifty dollars per’acre, ho asked tho moderate sum of Tiro Hundred Thousand Dollars thus making a profit of about $lOO,OOO on tho tomb of tho mighty dead. But this wna not all. Ho even bagged about thointerest on deferred payments and this question, It appears, sometimo delayed the consummation of the arrangement. The terms of the purchase, as will bo seen by reference to Miss Cunningham’s statement, were as follows Eighteen thousand dollars of tho purchase money was to be paid down, and the re mainder in four equal annual instalments, with interest added, for which bonds aro to be given, tho vondor to remain in possession and make title to the property only when Ihe last bond is paid This is really a “drive” of exceeding sharpness;* liltle outer than wo ov.r before hoard of being attempted oven ta Yanlieedom. What think our renders of Buch a j man w 0 re grct that ho hears the namo of Wash ' iagton—after driving such a bargain, actually prating about accommodation, magnanimity, and patriotism ! _ m Polygamy.—ln the House, on Wednesday, Mr Colfax moved an amendment to that part of the ponding appropriation bill which mado nrorision for tho government of Utah, abroga ting all laws in thnt Territory under which po lvgamy is tolerated, or tho payment of tithes enforced. He has a mining claim which he has worked for five years; and whenever his diggings will average “ore than two dollars a day ho will go ont into the high way, and coax some poor fellow to shore the profits of his labors. The Plea of Insanity. —A negro in Louisville broke open a box belonging to a comrade, con taining three silver dollars, and stoic ono of the ,pieces. Having been arraigned for the theft, the usual plea of insanity was urged, the coun sel declaring that no sane man would take ono and leave two dollars behind. Whereupon tho cuffec who was robbed, exclaimed with groat emphasis; “Masaa, I tell you dat nigger ain t crazy; he broke my box open and took de dollar out. Now, if ho had broke de \box opon and put a dollar In, den I’d say he’s crazy.” His argu ment was conclusive, and the thief was sent up.
