This boiler is used for the purpose of bleaching colored rage, and revolves with great velocity. It was at fall speed when tho accident occurred. It elands in a swat! building, <lc- dachcd from the main one, and erected on pur pose to accomodate it. Tbo boiler went out through tho roof and up river, tearing off the said roof, of course, nnd considerably shattering the walls.. BOH —Wo have before us Fortieth Annual Ilo port of this ’Society, just Issued from Mr Haven’s pre&9. This report was ButunUtvil at a meeUbjrigftlhe Society, held in (be church of tbo Rev.'jur. Howard, on (ho 25tli of January, 1808. Wo were present at that meeting, and ,at that time gave full abstracts of Librarian’s, Treasggfr’s and other reports. To that iL will be unnecessary to reprodace them in full. We *Kare, however, in this pamphlet in full, whsi we only gave in brief abstract—to wit: the eloquent addresses of Rev. Dr. Douglas, and of Rev. D. J. Verkes. They will richly repay a careful perusal. Dr. Douglas stated tho follow* log facte to illustrate the influence of the Bible amokrthe people: '*n|Ebgl&nd, 4 persons in the million, are an* uually committed for murderrin Ireland, 10; in Belgium, 18; in France, 21; in Austria, 26; in Bavaria, 20, (exclusive of homicides;) in Sar dinia, 20; in Tuscany, 00; In Rome, 113; in Naples, 174 or 200, The difference in licentiousness is ns marked as that of crime: In London, ont of 70,000 births in one year there were 2,000 illegitimate; in Paris, there were 29,000 legitimate and 19,- 000 illegitimate; in Brussels there were 0,000 legitimate and 2,000 illegitimate; in Vienna there ware 8,000 legitimate and 10,000 illegiti mate; whilst in Rome out of 4,000 births, 2,000 were foundlings, the three-fourths of whom died in the asylum. Let facts speak for themselves, and say whether or not wo have wer-estimated the moral power of the P.it.le New CflUßCii m Shabpsbubg—Of this new structure which we referred to a few days since, the Banner and Adeocate, printed in t lie Gazette the following notice: “Tbopeople of this congregation have, with most commendable liberality, completed their new house of worship, with the exception of the steeple. Tbo dedicatory services will ho held on next Sabbath. Tho sermon will bo preached by Prof. Wilson, of the Western Theological Semi nary. The edifice is sexenly-elght feet by forty seven, having a basement for Lecture Room, and rooms for Bible classes and Sabbath schools. The whole cost, including a steeple one hundred and twenty feet high, and the entire furnishing of the honse, will be about $6,700. We are greatly mistaken If this is not one of the very neatest and most commodious country churches in Western Pennsylvania. Mary Kact, wiftf of one Jacob Rauf, living ou Water street, Ist ward, made oath before the Mayor,,yesterday, that her hunband on the 19lh day of March last, drew a pistol on her and threatened fo take her life. This man also stands charged with the horri ble and beastly crime of attempting to outrage bis own child, a little girl only seveo years of age. It is a shame only to bavo alluded to the fact here. The. testimony against him is damn ing. We would not believe such abatement possi ble nod true at tho same time, were it not for the facts which It is unnecessary to allude to further. The Mayor after a painful examina tion of the facts, committed this creature, Kauf, to* jail in default of ball in-ihe sum of $1600. His trial will come on at the Jane term of the Criminal Court. CorrrE. —Passing along Federal street, yes lerday, we were shown for the first lime the somewhat celebrated “Old Dominion Coffee- Pot.” It looks like tbo philosophy of clear, well flavored ooffee, as explained to us. We see such flattering notices of the article in the east ern press, and thy article looks so perfect, that we are determined to give it a trial. It is for eale by- the Patentee’* Agent, Mr. Hnbley, of Federal street, Allegheny. At the same place we were shown a perpen dicular. gridiron, for broiling before a fire, by the aid of a reflector attached. We advise an examination of these two very important domes tic necessities, by all interested. Uobsr Stoics. —A man named Ephraim Mor row appeared before tbe Mayor, yesterday, end made an information against Robert White, for stealing from his stable a dark bay horse, on Friday night, April 16th. Mr. Morrow lives in West Deer township. The horse was valued at $l6O. A New Book.—We* are indebted to-Messrs. Hunt A Miner for a copy of a new book, a trea tise on Brewing, Distilling, etc., written by Dr. Lewis Feuchtwanger, of Now York. Not only docs (bis book tell bow to make liquors, but bow to make unmake them, that is, how to adulterate them. It tells how to increase the Strength of ale or porter by adding Cocculus indicus, to baqco leaves; how to make it appear old by adding 9ulphuric~acid, sulphate of iron, alum, etc. All this is too bad. Liquor iu a pure slate is bad enough, but when you add to the poison a poisou yet more active and debilitating, men instead of getting what la called "sober” after indulgence, gel what is called crazy. Aside from facts of this kind, there are a great tunny useful recipes in this book. If it tells how to make and use poison it is also a vadf vacwi in regard to tho antidotes In regarJ to various medicinal aud wholesome compounds, and the manner of making them, here arc the most spe cific instruction* Hunt A Miner have the book for sale The Tubatri:.—Miss Cushman played Borneo at the theatre last evening to a very large nu dicnce, with her usual taste and spirit.
