RIDDLE <Sc 00., firrn stritt. aboti sutthtleld. The Vital Point Tbe vital point is about the size of the head of a pin. It is a little spot formed of the gray substance of tho nerves. Tho vital spot is eitii atad at tbe point of junction between tbe cere bral marrow and the spinal marrow. The physi ologist Lorry is said to havo been the first ob server of this point, probably because he was tbe earliest observer who has recorded his observa. tions in books Sudden death from what has been popularly called breaking the neck seems, however, to have induced medical men from very remote times to suspect the existence of some such point. Rough men have often indicted inslant .death upon children by lifting them up by (ho head. Caged birds, in escaping from their cages, some times dash their beaks against the glass of win dows, and kill themselves instantly by breaking their necks. The bnllfiDch of n friend of mine, escaping from his cage during tbe lovo season, dashed against a pane of glass and expired in stantly. (in examining (bo bird, I found it had rap tured the vital point. The guardians of light houses describe how, during nights of storm and hnrricaof, they aro continually bearing sea birds dashing themselves against the ulroog glass of theirbeacons, and then fulling mysteriously down dead. Lorry says, “This place is fonud in little ani mats between the second and third and fourth vertebrae, and between the first and sec ond vertebrae of (lie neck, nud between Ibo sec ond aud third in animals of greater bnlk.” Lo galloin describes the spot exuctly: “Ressiration does nut depend upon tho whole brain, but really upon a very limited spot upon the medulla iddongatu, which is eilnaled at a small distance from (be occipital hole, aud toward the origin of the pnoumogaslric nerves, or eighth pair." L<j gallois arrived at this discovery, which deter mines the function of the medulla oblongata, anil reveals the primal motor of tho mechanism (if respiration, ibe central point of tho nervous sys tem, by culling successive sliqes of the br&ih until the section of the origin of the eighth pair of nerves stopped the respiratory movements. M. Flourens has added minute precision to the exactitude of the invaluable discovery of his pre decessors. Tbe vital point, he says, is situated live milleiuelres under the origin of tho pneunt ogastric nerves upon the brain of a dog. The vital point is situated three millemetres under the nrigiu of the pneumogostric nerve upon the bra'iQ of a rabbit. Tho bifurcation of the bul}> or medulla obfongata, forming a V, the vitajl knot is located at The poiot of the V. It is a gray corneous point. Tills gray pin’s head like spot is tho keystone of the fabric of life. Thp ancients imaglfietl tho Fatal Sisters with tbe dia ia(T, the spindle and the scissors, presiding suc cessively over (he thread of life; and the mod erns have revealed a junction of the nervoup fibres which a small gimlet nan scoop out cosily, L-haogiog (hereby, in an iostant, life into death. This great fact is easily demonstrated. “I often,” says M. Flourens. “make tho ex|- periments by transverse sections.’ , “If the section passes abovo the point, the rea piratory movements of tbe chest persist. “If the section passesbebind the point of junc tion of the pyramids, the respiratory of the face, the movement of tho nostrils and yawning persist. “If tho section posses upon tho point of the V of tbe gray substanco inscribed upon Ibe V of the junction of the pyramids or pen’s nib, thp respiratory movemoois of the chest and face are abolished instantly and altogether. ‘•I often perform the expcrimeni in anoibrr way. “I uce a little rutting punch scarcely a mil lemetre io diameter. I pluogo ibis cutting punch into tho prolong ed marrow, taking great care lo adjust the in strument to the V of (he gray substance. I thus suddenly isolate the vital point, and the tespiratory movements of the chest ono ihr rc apiiutory movements of the faco are suddenly abolished The study of Ihe vital point clears up many dark purzles. I need not poiot oul bow it expUins 1 lie cases of sudden death from what is called breaking (he neck. Tbo hangman who understands hie busi ness adjusts the knot so ns to dislocate ihe ver tebra:, and tear the vital junction asunder. -Tho knowledge of this point fs very important to coroners and their juries, and all persons having occasion to distinguish between suicides rdu murders. .. •* When the root of the pocutDOgaHirir nerves ore tarn,'lentb is inslnotaoeous: and this rup* lure require* marvellously litilo to aacoropliah it. HujcMps are mistaken for murders by per sons vtlio do doi know how easily suicides cm kill themselves with (heir feet resting, cr with their bodies lying upon the ground. Nothing more is needful than force enough to tear the breadth of a pin’s head of norvotis fibre The hangman's work i 9 commonly spoke of as an a&phyxia which it only is when bunglingly dune I on<;e knew übenerolcal olcrgymnu, who hating been a surgeon before he entered the church, and knowing the secret of hanging; showed his affection fora pcnitcut culprit con demned to death for a small offence, by attending him upon the scaffold, and by himself adjusting the knot of the rope in the way needful to secure the instantaneous) rupture of the point of Life. Tbo functions of (be vital spot, while explain ing the suddenness of many deaths which are con9taDtly»deeaied mysterious and suspicious, explain also the prolongation of life for consid erable periods, sometimes after the most fatal and frightful wounds. What l have said nbonl the vital point explains what used to ho when 1 was there, anil perhaps still is, one of the stand ing wonders of London. There used to be sev eral oatiDg-houses in the city famous for turtle soup; and, of course, tbero are plenty of them sUll. But at the doors of the houses which ex hibited the wonder there might bo bcgu lying upon a layer of sawdust, at the bottom of a basket, the living bead and neck of n turtle, tbo flesh of which was said to be already made into soup, and served up to tbo gastronomes inside. The head was undoubtedly alive. The eyes were olive and moving. They seemed dimly, vague ly, and feebly to ask from the epcctaiora if not an explanation of Lho phenomenon, at least, why aud wherefore the bead had been served In this way. Persons hardy enough to pul their fingers into tlio mouth were assured of the vi vacity of the severed bend by receiving n good pinch. ! for one atn guiltless of having ever eaten any of the soup; nevertheless lam still hnuutedby those reproaching eyes, although ! am sure I could exclaim, “Thou cans! not tmy I did It.’-* The physiologists long siuco reversed the won der of lho London cooks. Tho cooks displayed heads alive and bodies soup, and tho savans dis played heads dead bodies alive. Ilcdi cut off the head of a turtle whicheurvived-C days,’ Flourcs bad some salamanders which lived several months without their heads. LegalUos says birds have been known to walk and run with their heads off. Tho explanations are very simple. The vital point is close to the head in all reptiles, and es pecially in tho bntrachian reptiles; and the Lon don cooks, when cutting off tho head, cot off tho vital point with iL The physiologists do just the reverse. When the physiologists sever (he beads of frog, turtles, or salamanders, with a view to show the roptiles living withouL their heads, they are careful, by cutting above the vital point, to keep it attached to the body. One more explanation and I have done. The newspaper correspondents who wirote home ac counts of the battle of the Alma, challenged phys iologists to explain how a soldier, the length of whoso head from-the front to the back had been traversed byn bullet, was able to walk down the hill to wash his head in the river. (Similar facts have long been well known. Men hove lived many years, well, sane, and healthy, after their skulls have been cleft to a considerable depth on one side. The records of physiology aro full of marvel ous survivals after the most terrible wonnde; and their number will be increased continually as tho spread of science diminishes fear and in? creases courage among mankind. Hope will more and more help the healing art, when it is koown how nature triumphs over the most dis mal disasters which leave noscatbod the vital point that all-iroportant but well protected pin’s-head point, where alone tho prick of a pin is death.— Uousthold IFerij. pEMOCttATio Split is Obmon.—The regular Democratic organization in Oregon being pro slavery,.aereral members of the late legislature have tilled a convention, to bo held in Eugene city,' to organize a National Democratic party of tbo Douglas stripe. A letter from Oregon to ft "CalifornTavpaper says that the call elicited exten sive co-operation. RGH Porcupine Hunts.—Daring two or threw evenings we had great fun near the town of Pie-] lermaritsburg, in blocking out porcupine, il nearly ran over one on horseback one da j, and narrowly escaped getting his quills in my horse’s legs. They spread their quills wide, and ran backwards very fast, tbns presenting a j ehrvaux-de-frize anything but agreeable. This one dodged about round me, nowrunningthrongh I the grass quite fast, then stopping and backing; j so that I could with dfficulty keep my usually | well-behaved shooting-pony from actually turn -1 ing (ail, and in consequence fired both bullets ! wilhont any satisfactory result. I could not get at tbe “fretful'' in this retreat, but on arriving at home consulted with my Kaffirs, who agTccd that we would gel some dogs, and go out soon after the moon rote. We did bo, armed with knob-kerries and aasagie-’. and. placing two 1 sentries over the bole, we sent the dogs on tbe traces, having discovered that he was out for the night. We soon heard the yelping of the cur?, and ran lo the spot. The porcupine was coming along in a great fuss, with tho dogs all around him; assagies and sticks were hurled at him, while he dodged amongst the Kaffirs’ naked legs, who jumped about with wonderful activity. A blow on the noso at lo«t finished him.—Sport toy Scenes among?/ (he Kaffir? Tin: Lakes of Minnesota.—A correspondent of the Minnceotian supplies that paper with a table giving the dimensions of ninety-threo Lakes in Minnesota, comprising tho larger num ber of those most known. Thousands of others of smaller extent are distributed over the surface of the country, and a great many of a mile or two in length have been omitted for want of a namo. Tbe largest Lakes in the State, ac cording to this table, are—Red Lake, in Pembina county, thirty miles long by twenty wide; Dig Slone Lake, thirty mile* long by three wide; Mille Lac, twenty miles long and fifteen wide; Lao Traverso, twenty-five miles loDg by three wide, and Leech Lake, twenty miles long by eleven wide. Most of the list, however, are from one and a half to six miles loDg, aud from one to three miles wide. The water ia all Ihcse Lakes is perfectly puronnd sweet, and they ere all of great beauty of shore aud surroundings. The Lakes of Minnesota form a distinguishing feature of (lie country, and lend fin air of ro mance to the country. The Missouri I’rcc-Soilcr-s emboldened and animated by their success in the commercial and political capitals of that Slate, proposo lo try their band in tho State election, coming off in Angpst. The Jefferson City Enquirer, of the 10th, says : Old fogyism is no more, the charm is broken, the death knell is ringing in their ears! They have lost their grasp in this county and city. We bid farewell to the stand-still principle, and give a hearty welcome to tbo party of progress and enterprise. It is our pleasure to congratu late the citizens of the Slate, the citizens of our county, and of our little nourishing city, that there is a spirit in tbe land that looks more to the progress of the county than to tho intrigue of partizan wire working. Let the union party all over ibo Stale look to tbo interest of tbe country, and act upon tbe principle that will give rise to tbeir name, and success will crown their efforts with glory in August next.
