Our train was an ex press, and he inquired eagerly, at once, which was the first station whereat we were advertised to stop. I consulted my Cradshaw, and furnish ed him with the desired information. It was Reading The young man looked at his watch. “Madam,*' said he, “I have Iml half an hour be tween me, and, it may be ruiu. Excuse, there fore, my abruptness. \on have, 1 perceive, a pair of scissors in your work-bag —Oblige me, if you please, by cutting off my hair.” “Sir, said I, it is impossible!'' “Madame,” lie urged, and alook of severe de termination crossed his features, “1 am a des perate man. Beware how you refuse whnt 1 ask. Cut my hair off—short, close to the roots—im mediately: and there is a newspaper to hold the ambrosial curls." 1 thought ho was mad, of course: and believing that it would bo danger ous to thwart him, 1 cut off all ltis hair to the last lock. “Now, madam," said he, unlocking a small portmanteau, “you will further oblige me by looking out of the window, as I am nbout to change my clothes!'' Of course I look out of the window for a very considerable lime, and wken he observed, “Madame, 1 need no longer put you to any inconvcicnce," 1 did not recog nize the yongroan in the least. Instead of his former gay costume, he was attired in black, aud wore a grey wig aud sil ver spectacles: he looked like a respectable di vine of (be church of Euglaud of übout sixty four years of age: lo complete that character, he had a volume of -ermons .n his hand, which they appeared so lo absorb him —might have been his own "I do noi wish to threaten you. oung lady, ‘ lie resumed, '‘and 1 think, besides can trust your kind face. The quantity of land sown with Wheat in full was larger than thcprcTious year the wcaihcr during September being especially faroraM*' for it. Ai ihe commnnceuieut of winter, the growth was more forward than for many years the winter has been quite favorable, in all the States, an l the prospect of an abundant crop, was never more favorable, at the of the month of March. Many express the fear, that the plants are too thick on ihe ground, and that with favorahle growing weatherdunng April and May the growth will be too rapid, producing a wcac plant, and inducing rust or‘dodging." It seems to be generally conceded that ibe crop is past the dangers of winter, and that it will do well until about the first of June, when the next crisis of the CTop comes. —Cm Price Cur. Stocks of Wheat and Cobs t\ thk Hasp* or Fabmrbs. —The information we have received lrom our correspondent in this and ihe adjoin ing Stotes, the last three or four weeks leaves no doubt whatever that the stocks of Wheat and Corn, in the bauds of farmers are enormous The prices current for Wheal, laot October, was so far below the estimate set upon il by its own ers, that they refused to sell, preferring to hold it over until ppring for better prices; but in this they will be, it is now pretty certain Badly dis appointed. The Wheat Is still in their hands, but whether they will part with it at pres ent rates —IML» o<»c per bushel, is exceedingly doubtful. Many of our correspondents say uofwith standing the large amount of Corn damaged last winter, partly by being frozen before it was ripe, as was pretty generally the case, io ihe northern sectioos of the Western Slate?: and partly by bciog put in crib peforc it was dry, there will be as much sound Corn in the coun- try on Ihe first of next June, as ever there was in any previous year, Ibe sound having hccn carefully preserved, whilst the damaged has been fed to Hogs and stock of all kinds, with a lavish hand. The intense anxiety to procure old Corn for seed, which existed last December has all subsided. — Cm. Price Current. An l Mut’ETAST Movement in China. —Accord- ing to a London correspondent of the Pays, letters have been received from China, dated Jauuary 14th, containing circumstantial details rolative to the projects of the allied division which has left Canton for the neighborhood of the Yellow Sea. It is proposed to send despatch es to the Emperor of China, and if within a reasonable time a satisfactory answer shall not be received, the town of Tien-Sing, on the left bank of the Pey-Ho, or White Uivcr, will be strictly blockaded. Hy this operation it is cal culated that Pekin must assuredly be reduced to a state of famine within a i»-y short space of time, the Chinese Government never having a reserve of more ibnu three months provis ions in tho eapilftl of the cclestiul empire, find Ticu-Sing being the principal market for sup pljing tbo metropolis with food. Congressional Morality.—When Senator Douglas laid before the Senate the defalcation of the Chicago postmaster, it is reportod that: “Mr Senator Toombs replied that he Should vote for him, if proved to be the grentest theif aod rogue in the country, in order to vin dieatc the principles which the President has asserted.” And when an avalancho of facta was brought before a member of tho House now upon the Kansas Investigating Committee, the member (Mr. Letcher, of Virginia) is reported to have said : “They are of no importance ; that he didn’t doubt the frauds charged, hut that the committee in Congress had nothing to do with them.” Comment is scarcely nec<*9ary ; for euch men must have a sectional hydrophobia before they can fall into such a rabid stalo or madness So soys the New York F.zpras.— Wa,h. St o/rj. The Washington Union, makes the following candid nTowal, which wo direct the special at tention of all Democrats in Unn" B'P’ resentotires who profess to hare any regard for the will of the majority. Sending back the Lccompton Unstilntion to Kansas with the repudiation of Congress en dorsed upon its back, tht chnn'„ ar, coin that a majority rote catU not ayain U oltmnci m ill fa vor, . Here is a palpable back down—an open, out and-out confession that the Lecomploo swindle never did represent the wishes of the people of Kansas, and that if now voted upon, it would bo rejected with ineffable loathing and contempt. BAJtTtnrnsmo by slaves in Kentucky is said to have become so frequent, that in some coun ties considerable alarm is felt. The N. V. Express, in its Washington corres pondence, has the following interesting incident: On Saturday ‘last, while the discussion upon the Kansas question was in and whflo all parties in tho House were morointent upon arrangements for the final struggle than upon the arguments of speakers, and while all were in doubt as lo what might be tbeultimatc course of Mr. Giddings and his confreres, the Hon. Mr. Crittenden came into the hall, and, near the door, was joinbd by the Hon. H. MarshalL put a moment was permitted them for communica tion, when Mr. Giddings went forward, and, taking Mr. Crittenden warmly by the hand, with a recognition of Mr. Marshall at the same time, he said : ‘Who could have believed this of me, that I should be found with you, follow ing you? But, while 1 have spent a long life in fighting against enemies, and am ready still to fight them, [ have never fought, and cannot now fight against my friends. I remember well tbo occasion when, the ban of exclusion having been passed upon me in this nouse, I had taken my hat and was about leaving, I met you, Mr. Crittenden, with Henry Clay, at the door, and you each gave me, in that moment of trial, the warm hand of sympathy and friendship, 1 do not forget, for the great end's sake, strange as it may seem to some, and censured as I may be by many, iu memory of the past, I am with yon, Igo with you. A gush of the warm tears of a true patriotism hero came forth from the three so united, and tho fate of Lecompton in the Tlouso was so sealed past redemption." Abolition of Slavery in tiie Di tcu West Indies. —Tho last arrival from Jamaica brought a draft of the provisional law for the abolition of slavery in the Dutch West Indies, liberating 00,000 slaves in Surinam. The Kingston Jour nal heartily approves of its provisions, regarding them as designed to avoid tho social, commercial and political difficulties in which tho British West Indian colonies became involved by tbo general emancipation some years ago. Indem- made to the slave owners, in proportion to the ages of the slaves. AH children under five years of ago to be unconditionally free. The emancipated are not to become the unres tricted owners of their own time and labor. They are subject lo ccrlain orders, which they may release themselves from by repaying to tho Government tho amountof their freedom money, All are compelled lo contribute lo a fund for ed ucation, nursing the sick, and the relief of the poor and aged. Ex-Govhrnur pm.K, of Missouri, iu the re ccut Kansas debate in the l S. Senato, alluded sarcastically to the Nhw England emigrants who first went to Kansas, as carrying all their worldly goods in carpel bags. The St. Louis Intelligencer, thereupon, remarks that, when Polk himself first landed on the shores of the Mississippi, ho had not even a carpet hag to call his own. Ho has, probably, forgetten this fact, in his later prosperity and swaggering in solence. Heat wield Railroad. —Tho Washington (Pa.)
