Thb Maniac.— —lt is not our custom to take tiny notice of rhat the Evening Chronicle may say iq reference to anything that appears in these columns, but ns it yesterday assailed our terjujity, wo cannot well refrain from a.word in reference to that article. It assails also the vera city of Dr. Reed, just as it did about six weeks . ago, that of a clergyman of this city who read an announcement from the pulpit, and supposed it to be a fact, until the Chronicle (!) discovered e and exposed his error, only to have to take back all it had said, with bated breath and in gentle accents. Now hear tbo Chronicle : ‘This maniac that “{deeps now on a good bed, ' did not go to tbo Hospital till yesterday, and as the editor of the Qoztlte admits that it wad but yesterday he got bis information to this effect, it will bo seen that the poor man had no oppor tunity of sleeping on nny kind.of a bed at -the and that the story of our neighbor has in truth whatever." While we wcrc-reading the above piece of Donny-brook logic, tho assistant l’hysiefan at the lusanc Asylum camo into our office. 110 told us that the man came with them on Thurs day morning; that they washed him, and ho nt fora comb. This was given, and hb combed Ids own hair. They gave him food,; they clolhed’hhn. Then he asked to be permit- ; ted to sleep,! and he was at once taken to his j room, and had a two hour's rest on a good bed. It was from tho fact that Dr. Reed said he slept! on a good bed, that we inferred the madman had l been iHcro otct nighr. Jail logic, however, coaid not-imagine that, a man who had lain on the bare rocks,,niglit after night, stark n&fcqd, cobid sleep a little in Lho day time on a good comfortable.bed. Whatever Dr. Keed told us about this or any other man, we would believe— every word and every syllablo of il—against as . many jail toadies ah yoa can pack betwocn here and the moon. Tho-assistant Physician also • tells us, that yesterday the man, whose name is Goldcubaugh, walked out with him, and told Mm nil aboyt what he suffered in that dreadful ; hole. Tho man-will probably bo welt in a month J or two. y -ifhe Evening Chronicle winds up its weak dia y tribe na follows: * “When the management, flf the jail commits wrong be.exposed; but do not . chargejitwilh wrongs ofirbicli it is innocent, or | - misrepresentations for'lhe purpose of | giving these chafes credence before the public.” i We have no laoguogo tn express onr contempt j‘ for-.thd -incffable iflcaaness of tho charges of “malico” nnd “misrepresentation,” which this squib of lho Chronicle contains. Does that paper or any other dare to say that what wo said about . Lhat maniac Was a misrepresentation ? We chal lenge them-all at once, both tho writer of tho article and whoever ’inspired it. Tho jail was fullof visitor*.on that Sunday morning, and, the chain having been taken from the leg of the to come out of bis den * into the jAil-M*atiV>rhrk naked, and so remained j old coat around the man, j irnidthe did noC tear. [. We charge upon every man that has to do j aronnd.that jail lhat they do not.nggrovate ns to 1 ‘ disclose what we know, on good authority, about its “management." That wo do not, is because wc boar no ill-will against Mr. I’hillips, for wc havo no reason for having any. But we will maintain our indepcndftico and arc not afraid to speak what we do know. There is lying on our table n communication of five pages in length from a man who was so unfortunate ns to be thrust inio a hole there with four others. Wc have been balancing in our minds whether wo wooldor would not put it in print. We have not yet concluded. Wo wish libwcror. to add one word. Jn all we eaid about “that Maniac,” let it be borne in miad that we cast no imputation upon any inlivul urtJ. Wc simply stated what we knew to he farts. If-onr .shot told aud made a wriggling and __ a slinking among the dry bones,. it is not our ]gJf&aU; if the shoe fitted any body, let him put it Tk<in. Any public officer lhat gets beslavered and *"bepuo'ed"iu iapiii] letters in the Chronicle had better look out for Lis popularity aod beware lest there may be something-inferred from that fact, not to his advantage. Wc hare thus spent our time not because we care what that sheet the Chroniel.• may say, one way or the other, because . it makes no sort of difference to os, but because -onr friend Doctor Reed,, was maligned by infer ence in its narrow columns, and having defended i him, have said oil we have to cay on this subject j in connection with the Chronicle Uibij; Ahmtebsauy. —The Young Men’s Bible Society of tltfs city, will bold ijs 40th Arniiver nary in tho Second Presbyterian Church, on Monday evening, January 2oth. T&X Literary Circes:.-— Lost evening the young ladies at the. Pittsburgh Female fiemio ory, under the charge of Professor Barrows, g*T6 one of their entertainments. This consists of the reading of selections from good authors, and of the compositions of the papils. Inter spersed pleasantly with music, vocal and instru mental. Last evening we were present at these exercises and were exceedingly pleased. Tito voices of the readers were generally quite 100 small to fill tbo room, but they showed a good disposition. Indeed, most of them were little ones, and considering this they did remarkably , well. The room was completely filled with peo ple—parents and friends of the pupils. The performers were, of course, ambitions to do their very heal and look their Lest: and it is to incite this laudable ambition llml this'-Circle'* was organized. It has had the desired effect. The Young Ladies' Seminary is in an exceed ingly prosperous condition, the present number of pupils being 130. Under tuc tuition of a faithful board of teachers, and governed by mild yet effectual discipline, it has bccotno just ly popular in alt this region and is doing, we do believe, a most excellent work in affording fa cilities for a thorough, moral and intellectual (raining (o Young 1-adics. On examining their baggage and persons, a con siderable amount of money was found—and among it a coanle of counterfeit one dollar .bills, which Mr. White recognized as having belonged to him, and which hod been stowed aWay in the back part of his pocket-book for years—which fully entitles one of the gentlemen to the right to work for the State without remuneration.
