A special election is a rarity in this county esjennot remember more than one, and that waa jfor a Congressman, in 1844. The eery rarity of such an occurrence ought, therefore, to stimulate every Republican to turn out to it. It occurs, too, at an idle time of the year. 6 roads, to be sure, are bad, hut almost every farmer can afford to lake a walk or a ride to the polls of his district. It will be a sort of recrea- j on a relief from the supreme dullness of tho present time, and will afford a convenient chance | for meeting the neighbors and talking over mat ters generally. -Vobody doubts that Allegheny is a Republi can county, by an overwhelming majority; but majorities are of no use unless they are brought - out. Last fell three or four thousand Republi cans staid at home, and the locofocos have not ' ione arowihgi yet, over the near approach they made to boating us, in consequence of the apathy in our ranks. Republicans of the coun ty • It moßt not be so again. There are speoial reasons, now. for such a full vote and overwhelming victory as we are able to give. The administration of Buchanan has fully developed its infamous pro-slavery Pulley a policy so shameless and outrageous as “ ° f hlB ° wn P“rty- That policy has startled and roused Douglas, Stewart, Broder- I™’.. “ d ° h 0“ 0f other Ceding demo . «ats into determined hostility to the adminis tration; and shall the Republicans of Allegheny County be behind lire in denouncing and op j\ ’ ileSt SO ‘‘ emo of fn “ d n P»a P»pu ), lar rights, ever attempted; Wilt thoy not j °“ bnwo tU > opportunity of rash- I lug to tho ballot-box, and pouring out their in i , lgnan fumonstrance against the effort to forci \ Olavory.npcn Kansas through tho agency of the " eo "“P'«n Constitution ? w 0 feel as if a sim ple sUtement of the..case is ali that i. needed to rouse every Bepublican in the coonly to a •ease of his duty. 7 Ths convention which nominated Mr. Sans- Btmv openly and unequivocally endorsed the the administration in all it, act, and purposes and every vote given to Mr. SaUsbury is a vote of approval to James Boohanan. The Republican Convention denounced the administration, and every vote given to Johs Scorr-honest, wor thy, venerable, incorruptible Jons Scott—is a vote againet the administration. The issue is clearly joined. Let us meet it fairly and manfully and by bringing oat the Republican vote give Jons Scott such-a triumph as will folly vindi cate the Republican reputation of the county. The chief value, in our eyes, of this election, is not so much tho gain of a member of the House a means of testing the depth to which puta lie feeling has been stirred by the course of Bu chanan. If what has been dono in Kansas and Nicaragua, and whnUai been as well as what has nof been done in Dtab, will not move the public indignation, then nothing wiU. Take toldo_of the work, in this instance, and see that it Is done. Gel out your vote and leave nothing undone that ought to be done. See that you have Plenty of tickets, and that the enemy steals no march upon you. CosijatcciAt SrancTics.— The 28 failures in -Pittsburgh set down in theJiew York Clrcnlar <tf B. Doughs & Co. were the total occurring in this city from Dec, 1853, to Dee. 25, i. 5.57 two years, and not, as at first blush appeared during the late panic. This total, for two years’ is extremely small; and we were struck, on p<r rasing the list as furnished by Douglas & Co , With the small proportion in this city, as regards / Uk of •keepers, compared jrith { other cities. Look, Jbr instance, at the follow iog table: minna «r»,TOm, dk.2o, lautu, cu.-j:,. 15;;. Boston, Philadelphia, ... Pittsburgh,-... Chicago,. Cincinnati,...... CUvolood,. Xaw.Orlcatw,... ft t. The total number of stores in this list, exclu ding Pittsburgh, is 44,9C0, arid the total failures 2,265, or -one in 20; while "in Pittsburgh the total number of stores is 1,374, and the failures 28, or on.y one in 49. While the general average is one in 20, ours is, say, one in 50. A glance at the list will show any one- that our city pre sents the boat appearance of all, no matter from what point the comparison is made. This justi fies tho boast wo hare often made, that Pitts burgh Is the soundest and most'eolvent commer cial.city in the Union, and that business is established hero on a firmer and more enduring Tmsis than any where else. There may be more of what is called “old fogyism but it comes oat safest In the end. Rev. Cbablcs A vest.— We noted in the few est, words, In our columns yesterday morning, tfie decease of Res. Charles Avery. This gen tleman was a locgl preacher in the society to which he belonged. Ho was a most worthy, ex emplary and active member of tho Methodist .Protestant Church, and a main pillar in sus taining them in their works of lore and benev olence, in this city and vicinity. The unforta t . nalo colored race were objects of bis peculiar care. He caused to bo erected, for the colored ■ people of Allegheny City, a Church, and also boltl and sustained for their u*o, a College, where many of the boys of that race have been educated. Mr. Avery has been largely engaged in mer cantile and manufacturing punuits. .He woe at one time, a member of the large and success ful firm of Ogden & Avery, Druggiiu, and af terwards became interested in the manufactur ing business, having at the time of hU death a large interest in the Eagle Cotton Works in Al \ legKcny CUy. He was also a principal share . . ‘holder in' the celebrated and proGlable Cliff Copper Mioc, at Lake Superior. Ilia annual income xaust-havo been very large, a good por _ .lion of which was spent in deeds of charity. Mr. Avery left a wife, but, we believe, no chil - tires. For a long time he has been drooping gradually toward* the grave, but has borne his . suffering* with Cristian fortitude and patience.
