In onr last we mentioned lh« arrival of Grants coluqni at Gownpore, on the -ilh October, when, crossing the flanges, they armea at Alumbagh on the Ist November. U.Ud now bepo.no known that Ontrnm and Havelock wore notjonly holding their own, but were snffer.ng compara tively little injnry front the almost fire kept upon them by the enemy. They were provisioned for weeks, and as there was under stood to he above one hundred thousand rebels in arms around, .Sir Colin Campbel wisely rc eolved to delay the final attacl until the force at his disposal should have acsembled tn suffice strength to be irrCßistable. 11MI trcellency and staff reached Cawnpore on tbo 3rd, having, as formerlystated, narrowly escaped hetngcnptured by the enemy on the road Although it was known m August that ..n.imo men were on the way from Hnglnnd, the arrange ments for pushing them on appear to have been deferred till close upon .their nmvnl. To tins source of detention the teaslng-delays that fol lowed are mainly ascribed. Troops were now mustering tn strength at Cawnpope On the Jtb the sth, 6Srd, Mth, and (bird, with portions ot other regiments, crossed the Ganges,. and were speedily followed by the Naval Brigade, who dragned their 24 guns along with them, as if they had been toys. Largo supplies of pro visions had by thistimebeensentintoAlnmbagh and arrangements of all sorts wore made with lie cauti.n required and deliberation permitted hT the occaeion. Sir Colin Campbell left ( awn pore on (he 11 111, and rode forty mtle« at a stretch in the direction of Lucknow. ~,,,, Tho eick and wounded, left by Havelock at Alumbagh, were sent into hie camp, with tho view of reluming to Cawnporc, under a guard of Sikh horsemen, an arrangempnt that nearly proved fatal. As they approached the British camp, they were mistaken by the seamen of Peel's Navy Brigade for the advanced guard of the enemy, when the guns, loaded with grape, were leveled and about to bn fired. Luckily, the face of the European surgeon was recognucd in time to prevent mischief. The Commander in-chief bad -with him a European horse-batdery, 2 troops of horso artillery, HO KoyaJ artillery men, with two 18-pounders and two 8-tnch mor tars,; o*2o of Uic oth lancers, detatebraents of her Majesty's sth, Bth, 53d, 75th, and Odd. and ■ SftO of the Kami Brigade, or mc.odmg the “"J ; joining him from Alumbagh, above 3000 Europe ans in all; besides a squadron of Sikhs and of Hodson’s horse, 1000 Sikh Infantry- tappers and Miner's, or an additional 2000 natives. Ti.. r , tiy-tin.i. er, and made an attack on the British position, when a severe repulse was sustained by them. During these three days Lieut. Mayne, Horse Artillery, and Captain Whcatctoft, Carbineers, were killed. We had chiefly depended on our Artiilbr. wisely avoiding the needless expos ure of our Infantry to desperate men. On the lClb, the canal was crossed which separates the Alumbagh from Lucknow, the Chief advancing on Secunderbagh, which was carried after a severe struggle, the enemy suffering terribly. Having garrisoned each asweauTanci*d, the Satuuch was attacked aboit three o'clock in the afternoon, after n IremflMuus caunouadc, was carried about dusk. \ Sir Colin Campbell describe)} it os one ot the most severe fights he had ever witnessed, and few men have seen more of hard fighting than he. It was to ho cultivated, but only for syrup and feed. Fortunately it is remarkably valuable for these But just at a lime whcu Sorghum s'ock is down to its lowest ebb, we aro slartle.l by the indis putable fact that Joseph K. Loeermg, ofOakhill, Philadelphia county, haring grown the Sorghum and brought the full force of scientfie analysis to bear upon its results, has established that not only will the now cane yield cryslalliied sugar, but that the process ia so inoxpensire as to mako it rery profitable, while the trouble and skill m rolrcd are, allcr certain simple prcparallonshaye been obserred, actually no greater than what m ,t be required in making any ordinary slish. With a rery little practice any farmer may make his own sugar. A portion of the results of Mr. Lorering's experiments is before us, in the shape of boxes of sugar of diffirent qualities, andb large rial of the molasses. While so nearly resembling ordinary cane sugar that it may be used for any of the purposes of the latter, we remark that this from the sorghum, has a rich, pleasapt fla vor,’ almost-as superior to that from the cane, as nock is superior to cider. II Is like that of maple sucar but more delicato. Certain it is, that sor ghum’ sugar would yanish lnconceirably sooner than cane, in a family where children abound Tho molasses is also of a remarkably pleasant I taste. Mr Lorering's first experiment was to ascer tain from purified cane juice, with the polaris oope, the existence of chrystaliiod sugar and its" proportion. This done, he had still to dis oorcr the means of practically extracting it. The result of the first experiment was diseour auine “A dark, vicid mass, apparently a „ p „, vwrtuum," was certainly not very promis ing It stood Bix days without the sign of a crystal, when it was placed orer a flue and kept warm four days longer, when there was found “a pfety good crop of soft crystals, the whole very similar to the mdain from Cuba, but darker color.” This result reminds us of what whs said some months ngo by one familiar with French sorgho-culture, that, the Americans did not boil the juice long enough, and that the first man who made sugar from it did so by neglecting his kettles and leasing them to boil il 'ser'n experiments gore the result that an acre Will yield at least 1,400.22 lbs. of sugsr and 74 39 gallons molasses from 1 SKI gallons Se. When it is borne in mind that in many cases twice this amount of juice has been rais- J“he acre, and that Mr. Lowering sloesi by m nerfect machinery must hare amounted to ten I7t cent, it will bo seen that the sorghum is even more raluable than has been supposed by its most sanguine friends It is, furthermore, „ry erident that experiment, and a better knowledge of the degrees of temperature re quisite, will unquestionably greatly reduce the expense; and increase tho quantity of sugar and lh wVcommend the dissemination of these re sults to aU friends of the Sorghum, or rather to all desirous of seeing our country free from one of its greatest .burdens. There can now be no reasonable doubt that in a very few years eyery rariety of sugar wUI bo in the market at re markftbly reduced rates, and that no small por , nQ f th e praise which each results deserve _m be dae to the scientific knowledge and per- Mr. XoVeriog-— Phil, Bve, Bull. .nuns t_ touno JAMBS WILSON- *U* Tub LA 'T HOfBS OP ELDM SaMIKL COLB. , lilv* ■ LATE or PiTTSBL-Br.H.— from ’.be ! letters of Dr. E. His sufferings were most intense, notwithstanding he bore his severe sufferings with a calm and Christian resignation, without a murmur or complaint, and with a firm and un flinching confidence in the promise* of his dear Saviour till he breathed his last. His mtnu re mained clear and unimpaired though conscious that the time of his departure was at hand, ino only regrot he uttered during his whole illness, was absence from his dear wife and farail). During intervals from severe pain and vomit ing he employed himself in conversing about what was always nearest and dearest to his hearty viz: the best way of advancing the interest of his Masters Kingdom. His prostration still rapidly increased, after the exercises he rallied a litiloand said to rac, ‘a little marc religious conversation.' Previous to this the Doctor with an associate called ami made a critical examination of his case. Mr. t. asked them wbnt they thought, they seemed to evade a reply. He enquired of the Doctor if he wa« a Christian, he said no: Mr. ( said, would to God all men were Christian?. Inc Doctor privately requested me to inform . Ir.
