Nt—wiLLlt Xil I left l'esth in the express mail boat fur Con stantinople, which was advertised to go through in six. days. Boon the city disappeared from view, with its vast plain, on which in former times It is said that a hundred thousand nobles and priests and people sometimes met in their great national assemblies. The Blooksburg, commanding as it doe:i the river for many miles, - with the vine-clad hills which rise in its vicinity, was no longer visible, and we were sweeping through that immense plain which stretches almost from the Carpathian to the Balkan mountains. Vet in the midst of this plain the river Bowed rapidly onward, turning by the force of its current a great number of mills. These are exceedingly primative in structure. Two small barges, secured at proper distances from each other, are anchored in the stream, and between them turns a largo wheel. The mill machinery, together with the family of the miller, arc in a house built on one of these barg6l, while the other serves only to support the shaft of the wheel. I think between Vienna and Orsova we have passed nearly one thousand of these mills; and if I judge by the bread every where given us, they make excellent flour, for better bread I hare never seen than the white bread of Germany—especially of Austria. The people generally, however, use brown or black bread, made of rye or barley, which is, too strongly seasoned with caraway seed to suit my taste. For many miles the hulls are low, and the .auks aro thickly wooded, yet gentle slopes and small villages are sometimes seen in the distance, and then the hills for a time approach the liver and giro variety to the scenery. There was but little to excite especial interest till toward; the evening of the brat day we tip preached the village of Mohacs. Here is a coal' yard, where the boats are noutlly supplied with coal of tin inferior qualitY. It was on the plain adjuomt IC this town that, three hundred seats age, Lewin i r., with . :11,01al men, mtt tempt ed to arrest t he progress of the victorious Sultan, Solym in the MaguitiLent, who was at the head of '.2. 14 ),11‘,/tt. The result war that 22,te10 Chris tians, with many dlgnitaries, both military and ec in clesiast ical, fell upon the field--the' Hying kg perished :a a swamp, and the throne of Hungary passed to a Herman family. Just lc° years afterwards, on the same spot, the Duke ' of Lorraine, with the loss oft few hundred men, ' defended the Turk': h arniy, which left ! dead on the field, and such ier.r, spread in ; tloar ranks, that they never afterwards attempt ed the invasion of Hungary. .1 short distance below this plot, the waters of the brave ere united to those of the Danube. Tito I,,,;atn in the Danube do not generally run at night; but an we had ft clear FAQ, and bright mottalig'd, the moon being rit the full, cur steamer continued tic o.srse. before daylight we 1.a5.....1 i'eter wermicin, one el' Ihr stron, osl si mon for is fort Hungary. la name is said to be derived from time fm,t or Peter th e Hermit havin g at.this phase marshalled the ~, !mliers of . the tirst crusade. leo, rest the remains of the iambus monk, John l'opistron, who preached a ECCOUII eru ,ade vi' mach more value. For when Cunstonti uople had fallen, and the European forces were dismayed, only by the preaching of this enthu siastic wont: was an army raised which checked the progress of the victorious Mahornet. The pulpit is still shown on the outside of St. Ste phen's church in Vienna, where Copistron ad dressed the multitudes. It is quite primitive in its appearance, but 1 thought when I looked upon it, that when men are in earnest to move the:messes of the people, they will be compara tively careless as to the forms and arrangements connected with their work. Passing Nensatz, where entrenchments supposed to be Roman may still be seen, and Karlowits, where 1.50 years ago the famous treaty was signed which gave to Austria, Ilung, ary Slavonia , and Tran sylvania, we came in eight of the spires and minarets of Semlin and Belgrade. Semlin is the last town of the Austrian prov inces on the southern side of the Danube. It is separated from Belgrade by the river Save, called by the Hungarians Sava, and which, as it empties into the Danube, is nearly two miles wide. Situated between the two rivers, with a hill rising behin ff it, it has a slight resemblance to the lower part of Pittsburgh, when Grant's hill stood in all its glory. But the resemblance, partial an it is, ceases with the site. There are no forg&t, no - hammers, no large rwarelMuses, and no volumes of smoke, which prevent the city from being seen, anti which deposit their sooty flakes upon the reluctant brow of beauty. Yet there is coal in the vicinity, for on stepping ashore I found a kind of coal -yard, but the coal was very light, and much of it almost as tine as dust. The only articles I saw for sale near the wharf were pears and grapes; the latter are ex ceedingly fine. From Pesth down to the Turkish .provinces, large, beautiful, luscious grapes are every where offered for, sale at n kreutzer a bunch; or if the bunches are small, two are given for a kreutzer. have bought as m any hero for less than a cent as would coot in our country from ten to twenty. The pears do not equal ours in flavor, The town, which has a population of 9000, consists principally of low, small houses, but there are some respectable buildings. I counted the steeples of half a dozen churches. The hill overlooking the town bears upon its brow the ruins of an old tower, named after the famous John Ilunnyades, the champion or Christendom, who died shortly after he had repelled the invasion of Mehemet H. To many a traveler up the Danube, Sunlit; Christian as it is, has left no pleasant remi niscences. Here is the quarantine station, where every person from Turkey, especially if there woo rumor of plague, were compelled to remain from ten to forty days in the Lazaretto. This is a large piece of ground encluaed by palisades, containing a, number of smell hots, enclosed also by palisades, on that emelt may be kept separated from others. No ono, except the officers in charge, holds any communication with theme, unless at a distance of several yard. Su flur was this system of tour:nail/a carried, that no person ]vas permitted to pass from Senilin to Belgrade unle,s accompanied by a health officer, and then he must return the same day - or be subject to quarantine. These restrictions are now greatly relaxed, but the ; effect has been such that between Belgrade and Semlin there is little more intercourse than if they were a hundred miles apart. They stand as reprementativert.of Christianity and Aloh..ant brougli*„into, close contact, but never coalescing Belgrade presents, as sees from the river above .ticurilitt, an imposing appearance. The hill on which it stands rises boldly Item the river, and is crowned with a fortress of consid erulde strength. Its minarets of which I count ed some twenty, wore sparkling with lbe light reflected from !heir tin or vine covered summits; and with its palace building b and a number of newer edifices, it scented a city er grandeur and- of life. Off-nearer approach, however, it was noon that the houses were generally of quite ordinary construction, and scarcely a sign of activity was apparent. As our steamer swept by without stopping, (though it is the city of 13,000 inhabitants) u few lazy looking Mussul men, with. their wide trousers tied at the knees their long sleeking, turbans, and pipes, were loitering at the wharf. On a plain adjacent, a few companies of Turkish soldiers in European dress, except red caps, wore on parade, and -presented a quite respectable appearance. The old town has walls beside the fortifications, but the Christian or Benicia part of the town is ex tending beyond, and shows some signs of life. At this place occurred one of 'the most singular scenes ou record. COnstantinople had fallen before the Turks. The triumphant Mehemet, with 200,000 troops directed big course towards Central Europe, A fleet of Turkish boats ap peared hefore Belgrade, and co-operating with the army, the garrison was summoned to sur render. The assaults were tierce—no hope of relief was. apparent—resistance seemed useless —and the Baerl 3 oo was about to yield. 301 i • For many years Belem le wal the capital of 1 the Turkish province Of bervia 1t the moorrection or revolution of. liiitird it W:l4 501 , 04 i by the Servian forces, and bold by figlq: if.y when the poet, acktiowledged*the independsnee of li:ervia, it was agreed th;i n smali antionl tribute should be paid. and that a Turkish gar. neon ShOlii./ , cupy Belgrade and id Pew ether! puns—the Serviaus having otherwise independ ence ofgoverurnenr Whether because lie did not' like the presence of the Turkish troops nt because he considered it otherwise preferable, Priuoe i3lilosell removed his residence to Kragukeyntr, which is mere central, and i , now the capital firc , , , ,s, ricrol.,.. 15k.;. - v THE Sr. Paul parte', titl States officials, whom ti.e . ,•des;,--: • t , ezery of election returns from • -,• • !?. pre cincts, under circumstances ai; bold and palpa ble as those which Gov.
