Partitulars of I he Pall of Delhi Monaca, Oct. 17.—0 f the assault on the morning of the 1 it It we hove not received many more particulars. We learn, however, that the siginal . for the rush of the two columns upon • the breaches right and left of the Cashmere gate was the blowing open of the gate itself.— This was effected by an officer of Engineers, Lieutenant' Salkeltl, accompanied by three sergeants. In the performance of this danger -0119 duty the officer was shot thronf,Pli an arm and through a leg, and two of Lis men were killed. iTfiby: succeeded however, in affixing the bags ar powder to the gate and in blowing it open, upon:which the assault was given at the breaches. The ladder parties at the head of the assaulting columns ore said by one account to have suffered considerably, but the principal tom of tho day—appears to hare taken place after the entrance had been effected. A. lodgement having been thus obtained, our troops made steady progress throughout the 14th and two following days, occupying the open space near the church and Skinner's house, capturing all the northern walls and gates of the city, pushing on Ityand seizing the magazine, until on the • evening of the Nth a line of posts ;woe estab lished.acress the city from the Cabal Gate to the Magazine, and The mortars planted in the magazine compound had commenced playing nporpelinighur nod upon the Palace. Throughout the 17th, as we now find it to be true,' this snit enclosure Ant under &constant fire of shells, as also, was the neighboring fort ress, the Selimghur. Early on the morning of that day our left as pushed forward from the magazine to the house formerly occupied by the Delhi Bank, and commanding the great gateway of the Palace that faces the ChandneeChouk the broad street which runs westward through the city up to the Lahore Gate. Shortly afterwards our posts along the whole line were advanced as far as the canal. The fire of the enbmy at Ulm ghur was kept down by ours to be almost innoc uous, nor was the resistance in our front so active as on the prerions days. The look outs front the old position on the ridge of nimbi) Ban's house reported continual streams of men and animals Issuing from the Ajmere Gate in the rear of the city. Great numbers of the inhabitants, both male and female, came in at the advanced posts during the day, and were passed out through the gates which were in our possession. Through the night and the follow. ing day, the 18th, the fire upon the Palace, and Selimghur was maintained, anti the fortress in return fired only a few shots which did no harm. On ;the left the . position at the hank was strengthened, and in ,the night /he Sappers were at work advancing through the houses to their front towarda the Burn Bastion, which commands the Lahore Gate. On this day none of the townspeople came in, nor was any. certain information obtained of the move n:L=li of the royal family or of the rebels at Miring the night bet caeca the fifth and luth, the mortar batteries played upon the districts of llre-tity7outh of thePalace-and.barderingon the river. With the dawn of the 19th they were turned to the right upon the JlllllMa Mmuid and its vicinity. The line of posts was advanced al most to the Chandnee Chouk. Selimghur was silent, and parties of men, armed and disarmed, were observed crossing from it to go tothe other side ofthe derma by the bridge of boats. The Palace was said to be deserted, and the whole of the rest of the city to be In process of evacuation. Shortly before dark-,the labors of the Sappers on the right-being completed, the Burn Bastion, mounting sir guns and one mortar, was carried without. loss. On the left a field-piece, behind a breastwork in front orthe great gate of the Pa lace, mill maintained a fire on the bank. but without tancheffect. Throughout tho night that followed, a continuous mortar fire was kept np on the southern districts of the city With daybreak on the 20th came the certainty that the protracted Struggle was drawing to a close. The Lahore first, and then the Ajmere Gate, with its works, being found deserted, were occupied and secured. By noon, possession was obtained of the Jumble Musjid. The Cavalry that on the previous day had been sent round to the southern face of the city to observe the enemy's camp outside the Delhi Gatoretarned to report that it appeared - tine abandoned. The explosion of a magazine in that diremion„which bed been heard early in the morning, was confirmatory of this front repo be c ame e nine The resistanceemess decided. and.i o f tho mutineers o nt h in our e , left by I 0 o'clock the gust or glms 111 front of the Palace had been taken•and .spiked.-There a column was formed for the Pakice itself. It ad vanced, blew open the grediTgates, and ootupied the vast piles of building, which were found, as anticipated, all desertedi Two hours more and Selimghur and the bridge were ours. Nothing now remained bat the south-western quarter of the town, with its walls and gates beyond the Jumma Munjid, and by, five in the afternoon this was In the possession of the troops, nor this only, but also the abandoned camp beyond the walls. And thtis by the close of the errenth day of this arddous struggle the labors of the gallant force were crowned with complete success. - The appearance of the once rich and populous city, when the storm of are and iron that tio long had hailed upon its every street at list cleared off, bore witness to the vigor with Welt that storm had been directed andmaintained. Under one vast pile of ruins lay featering carcases' of slaughtered rebels. No such scene has been witnessed in the city of Shaft Jehart since the day when Nadir Shah, seated in the little mosque ih the Chandnee Chouk, directed and superin- Aended the massacre of its inhabitants.. And if the slaughter that has attended the righteous vengeance al the British Generalizes been less eitensive and promiscuoui than that which fol lowed upon the sanguinary caprice of the Per sian tyrant, yet lho ruin of the Impericiicity is more certain and complete now in 1857 khan it was then in 1789. But the last holder of the title of Great Mogul, still lives. On abandoning thweity he took his route to Kootub Miner. In that direction, some six miles from Delhi, he had a palace. But whe thee he betook himself thither, or whether he took shelter at the stately tomb of his ancestor lloomayoon, accounts seem to differ. however,, on the ;Ist ho was brought in from his hiding place a prisoner by Lieutenant Hodson, of the Ist Fusiliers, with his Irregular Sikh Cavalry. The King was accompanied by his begun, Zeenut Mahal He is said to have declined.to surrender till assured that his life would be spared, and that such assurance was given him. This may be so, but, when he could have no option but to surrender, the propriety of acceding to his demand for terms seems doubt ful. Iloweyer, he is a very old man, and may be allowed the remainder of his days in peaceful captivity. But, not so the younger princes of his family: Of these, three were taken by Hod son at Itoomayoon'e tomb on the =id, and his mode of dealing with them will, I doubt not, meet with the same approval in England as it has met with here. Taxed with'_ their guilt as leaders in the rebellion; they craved for mercy, bnt stern justiee only was dealt to them, and they were shot to death upon the spot:. Their names were Mirza Moghul and Khisr Sultan, sons of the King, and Abu Bukr, his grandson. Their bodies were taken into the city and expo sed foe' two days at the Kotwillee or police station„. In the Chandnee Cheek. This was the last-notable event of which, we have beard as taking Place in the , city or its immediate neigh borhood up to the 2fith, the date of the latest official...notification at Lahore. Many of the inhabitants, however, who remained in the city after.' our occupation have, as I learn from a letter just received, been shot for possessing in their houses the property of :Europeans. The i officiating colnzaissioner was engaged in organ. i tang e. police forceand re-establishing. order. I colonel Bern is appolnted military governor. 1 'The uondort, lfmts says : "tew.days later: the city is described as aft - solotely void of Inhabitants. On the ittth Havelock crossed; tires to an island in the river, and thence by bridge of boats constructed with great labor.— Sir ill4:l3CBltrattl accompanied the force in his civil capacity only, announcing bin intention to leave the command in General Havelock's hands, in a chivalrous anti spa iced order. The cross ing was effected without loss under the fire of the 24 pounders, and the enemy, after a merely nominal resistance (says the General, retired to his fortified position at Mungarwar. On the 2 let, the heavy guns and baggage having_been brought over on the day previous, the General stormed this position, taking four guns.l:lTwo of those, together with the regimental colors of the late Ist Bengal Grenadiers, were taken by the volunteer cavalry, in a charge, in which they were headed by that splendid volunteer, Sir James Outran. From this point tight up to Lucknow, no opposition appears to have been offered to the march of the force. The enemy fled before it as they advanced, throwing their g . unsinto wells, and even in their panic neglect ing to break down the bridge over the river Saye. By the this bridge woo crossed. and the army was able to catch the sound of firing at Lucknow. Immediately their 24 pounders pealed forth a royal salute to cheer the hearts of their comrades, now proved beyond a doubt that they were still holding out. From this point oar information is meagre. While we are cer tain that the garrison was relieved, 2511 i, the:, mode in which the relief was conveyed is not ' quite intelligible from the telegraphic messages. Lucknow, with the Palace and the Residency, is on the right lank of the river Goomtee. which . is the side nearest to Cawnpore. Yet Rare:eel's force appears to have crossed to the left banki . in which case it must have recrossed afterwards. And perhaps he did so. for to arrive at the Res idency by. the direct road he would, I believe, have to carry the enemy's intrenclamente and penetrate the town: whereas by skirting the town and crossing the river'aboye or below it,' might arrive with comparatively little'oppo sition at a point opposite - to the Residency, and be able to re-cress to it with little . difficulty.— But, however, it was done, done it was,, and on the eiening of the 25th the Residency was reached just in time, for mines had been ran under the chief works and were ready for load ing. Either in the relief, or in subsequent op erations against the enemies' batteries, a loss of 400 killed and.wounded was incurred. The latest message which i can discover as emanating from Cawnpore states that on the day following that of the relief advances were mak ing upon the city; that the "right quarter" was . in our possession : that seven guns had- been taken : that the enemy were deserting the city, by thousands, and the late King's Sons had fled to Fyzabad. I have beard of a native report as late as the 4th instant, to the effect that Sir James Outran (this I believe is true) was slight. ly wounded, and that the Europeans were going that day to have agreat dinner at the Residency to celebrate their success. Naturally the coon. try between Lucknow and the river is at present - • disturbed, but we shall soon, no doubt. hive fuller accounts from Cawnpore. 181:11ME • • - - p01: RENT.—A comfortable two story Drick Dwelling , with Barn and stmm aix lures or ex cellent land, and near Cart I.llmay.. th1 , 11.11...,13 Indo hi• had ItylutAiltedY on APPliolttion to A.I.E.XANDER ELNU; dsd 273-Llberty treed U LET.—A L:• story Dwelling I.louse'; on Penn street. tow arson Hand and Wayne 'streets.
