Wright, - of Indiana, a , datightsee who ' has'an inclination to parade and air his. piety on all possible occasiona . .. It is an 'evangelical premise that the saints shall posoios .he earth, and delight them selves in its fat things, and we may.expect (irre spective of the aide they have taken, or whehher they have appreciably done anything) that the blessed companY, of .Evangelibef - Protestantism shall have a epode .spoil of the Philistines in thetnidst of the p mocralio camp." There is a preolos admission inihe sentences we have italicited, l and if the statement came from any other smarms the leaders of the party would doubtless rent it as an insult ; but they dare not quarrel th the influence represented by the Freeman's Y u:rnal, and so they must. permit whit it says to' go out as so much unquestiona ble truttr. Mr. uehanan must put a watch upon...his ministers abroad, and not permit. them .to,bo,blabbing out their religious preferences or showing their hand offensively to the mother church. The latter will not endure it ; and Mr. i Buchanan cannot c arry along an administration with the mere ha -full of votes that would be left to him after t e elements are eliminated to which Coy. Wright objects. Mr. Wright must he silenced ;• it will not do for him to be quar reling with hie bread and butter : and all other democnds with ednls in their bodies must un-. derstaud, hereafter, that they must not only sacrifice their humanity and love of liberty if they remain in the party, but they must silence all religious utterances for fear of offending their allies and reducing the votes of their party to a hat-full.: The democratic party is not a party that can tolerate freedom of thought or speech. A democrat may be a Methodist, if he chooses; but if he holds an office he must not attend the convociitione of his church or lift up his v Ace in a Protestant gathering; to do so is to endanger the unity of the party. That hat full of men in it, Who cannot ho grouped under the beads of Romaiiism, Formalism, Socinisnism or Infidelity, and 'also are thus contemptuously spit upon by the FSeeman's Journal., ought to be locking out for what little humanity is left to them—if they have any regard for it. DEMOCRATIC Po. TICAL Ecosomr.—The plan of the Port ter remedying our social evils by tanking slaves of our laborers is a fair instance of Political EconoMy as it is Understood in the Democratic party. ! The Post points to the con dition of the laboring man here as a miserable one—no work; nobread, no shelter, and no one to pity or relieve,! the utmost of our charity venting itself in nothing botter'than soup houses; while in the south the slave Is well-housed, well. fed and well Itakin care of: The advantage • being thus altogether on the side of Slavery, the Peel would givp oar laboring men the bene fit Of the advantage by making slaves of them. a speciMen of the care that would be taken of them, we buot4. the following from an able communication (One of a series) in the New Orleans Dellitt, the; author of ithich is conduct ing a discussion of !thewhole triestien of Slavery. Would he think himself well cli, thed with five dollar, worth of clothing for an entire year! We fancy he would not. To talk of Oen thus provided for as being 1217/121=1 preposterous. Iyhy, if such Provision would content our workingmen, they could earn it all in a month and atord to go idle the rest of the year. The Peat Must harbor some peculiar an ' imbsity towards Ito laboring men to wish them reduced to such aatiliful elate. Apnoros Reyonsr. —The Democratic papers, quite generally, both North and South, taktioe casion to use the Anancial panic and the result ing misery amougilate working men of the free Stoles to point a clot:artist between the systems of slave and free tl i : f .lior very much in favor of the former. Of a party of about 130 persons, only 15 infant children were saved. The account was given by the Indiana themselves to the Mormons at. Cedar City, to which place they brought the children, who were purchased from them by the people of, that city. Whether the cause assigned is suffi- 1 dent to account for the result, or whether a dif ferent cause is at the bottom of the transaction, we will leave the.reader to form his own conclu sion. We can acarcely believe that a party trav eling along a highway Would act in the manner described—that is , to poison the carcase of an ox, and also the water, thus endangering the lives of these who were coming after them. Yet this is the story told by all who have spoken of the massacre.. It is stated, the 'emigrants had an ox which died, and they placed poison in the body, and also poisoned the water standing in pools, for the purpose - of killing the Indians; that several of the tribe had died from this cause, and that the whole force mustered, pur sued the train, and coming up with them at the above named place, which favored their pur poses, attacked and murdered the whole party, except a few infant children. Tho Indians state that they made but. one charge on the party, in which they cut off the greater portion of the men, and then guarded the outlets of the canon, and shot the men andwomen down as they came out for water; that one man was making his escape with "a few children, and they followed him, killed him, and took 'the children, 15 in number, tho eldest under five years tlf age. The reportwasbrought to San Bernardino, by 'Messrs. Sidney Tanner and W. Mathews. A correspondent of the San Francisco Alta hints his belief that these people were massacred by the Mormons, end the proofs all tend to con firm that suspicion. TUE DAILY floes PRAVEII MECTIZO.—The New York correspondent of the Boston Aurae/ thus describes a feature which originated during the stress of the late panic : "One of the features of the day that is quite noticeable is a men's day prayer-meeting held in the lecture room of the old North Dutch Chnreh, from twelve o'clock to one o'clock.— The meeting is began at twelve o'clock precise ly, and clones ozactly on the hour. The room is full and crowded, and the interest appears to increase from day to day. It originated with the new effort to meet the religions destitution of the lower part of the city, and begun with a modest meeting held once a week. But the at tendance and the benefit seemed to demand the more frequent obiervance of the privileges, and now it has become a daily service. And with tho pressure came a larger attendance, and a more spirited service. And the probability is that the meeting will be adjourned to tho church. The movement was a bold one for Nev York— so near the gates of mammon, and so near that altar of Pluto at which so many in our midst do not fail to bow &lira and worship. Not one woman is In the meeting, and the singing from two hundred male voices is 'really majestic." STOCK GAUTILISCI tx. NE* Tons.—The trans actions at the Stacoard to day were to enormous ex.tent. The spirit of speculation was rampant, and the Board was a scene of intense excitement, the desire to buy touching almost the point of insanity. Each lot of stock offered was claimed by half-a-dozen buyers. The shorts were free purchasers, but the upward impetus of prices received large told from outride orders and from the clique of ball operators who have control of the market. The public. who are generally in at the higheg point, are buying now the stocks they retused when 20 to :10 per cent, lower, Ono remarkable feature in view of the activity at the Board is the large propor tion of baldness done far cash. The time oper itions arc comparatirely small. The aggregate registered business t o day was 5100,000 of bonds and 29,000 shailw of stock. Of this, less than 6,000 shares were en time. In addition, a large business was done outside the Board.—.T. Y. Trib. Irednesdr.y. THE ADMINIOTOATION TUC 'WALKERS The course of the Administration in condemning Gov. Walker, of Kansas, for throwing out the fraudulent Pro-Slavery vote, while it connives at the escape of fillibuster Walker, who is stout to renew his piratiCal attempt to conquer and introduce Shivery Into Nicaragua, shows a de gree of consistency worthy of all praise.. The two seised' mat-administration, overt and covert, serve to illustrate the potenoy of the Federal Government, under the rule of the Black, De mocracy, for evil, and its impotency for good. It is an all-powerful despotism in frostroting the cause of Freedom in the Territeries—a rope of sand, when the Slave Oligarchy sends forth its lawless bands for conquest Wadi. I:gut:ie. EVIDENCES or • •Ovcnrnsotno."—The Lozerne Union of last week came to us u-ith nine closely printed columns of Sheriff's sales. A few years ago everybody rushed for Lucerne county to make their fortunes in coal lands, and almost every foot of property contiguous to the Dela ware, Lackawana and Bloomsburg railroads was bought at enormous prices, (on credit, of course) to be paid for out of the proceeds of the sales of coal that was to be dug therefrom. The spec ulation in most instances has proved a failure, and now the Sheriff is reaping a harvest from the folly of the speculators.— Rearing l'rrs.r. Tun Chicago Tribune says that the freighting season from that port by lake is over, and adds "Prospects for Flour and Grain the balance of the season, seem gloomy; receipts aro likely to continue large; the warehouse capacity of this city is now about fire million bushels; we learn that two or three of the elevators have enough contracts to fill them by February, and It is probable the whole of them will be filled.by the end of that month. There is likely, there fore, to be a good business for the vessels In the spring, which lay uphere this winter." DEATH or a CLETENAEIAN—Mt. His review of the Deed Scott decision will soon appear. It is to be very severe upon some points of that infamous decree. TUE Chicago Tribune notes the failure, in that city, of the firm of Walker, Bronson & Co., a heavy produce house. Their suspension is at tributed primarily, to the failure of their grain consignees at Buffalo, and secondarily to a spe cies of grain-gambling somewhat similar to the stock-gambling as it is practised In New York. lions were taken to fill contracts to-day, to the extent of 1,500 head, at $5,75.
