POLITICAL rROPIIECY.—The Wilmington (N. C ; ) Herad anti the Louisville Jo urn at, quote with approval the following from it speech of Senator Seward, made in 1855, in the Senate, and they both regard it as a remarkable instance of m litical prophecy. The Senator, it.will be seen, predicted not only the crash, but the year in which It would come: "'Mr. President,' said he, 'we were told by the honorable Senator from North Carolina, Mr. Badger, that we must adopt either the tariff pro ject-before us or his amendment, because the railroad interest requires, it. "This brings mo back to tho precise question which I discussed hero a few days ago. I think sir, that the restoration of the business of rail road building to a healthy State requires us either to leave It to work out its own cure or else to adopt a remedy very different from want is here proposed, a remedy which will stimulate production of the raw material and of fabrics by manufacture. Anything short of this Will fail to gliti tone to the general financial systfm of the country, now so much deranged. The troubles with which we are contending arose front • excessive importations. The project be fore us tends to reduce duties, and so to encou rage and stimulate imports still more. ft . i, a frrrr of f Aida tee r Birk. You propa,e to add fuel to the flame that is consuming us. Let us look bac ward for instruction. In 1834, by excessive importations, by an unexam pled enlargement of credits, we brought on great fi scal emba sments. Property of every kind was deprecist : every body wanted relief loans: credit was p ralysed. Tho Bank of the United States czar itself and gave relief; the crisis BCCIIICA to L e been passed. Importa tions were immediately resumed, credit was again expended. Wheat rose to two dollars per bushel: prices et , illdescript ions of property were inflated. The relief obtained was only tempora ry. The embarrass , fente of 1834 returned in 1837 aggravated te old. And then came that fearful convulsion Melt carried distress and ruin throughout this broad land—distress and ruin from which we have required twenty years to recover. Sir, we, in 18:4, just passed through theimcmonitory symptons of a crush- I ing pressure, whirl, is to come on in 1857 or some year not long thereafter, 1.9 t this not he thought strange. It is near twenty years since the last revulsion. Commercial rev:listens come once in twenty years. Tho circumstances of our condi tion now correspond exactly with our condition previous to t h e revulsion. Government 01mm:fu sed to stimulate prodnetiun by a tariff ofprotection, Ora. sol the contrary gam/etre, importation. It went on to the bitter end. Government refusea to stimulate production now by tariff for protection, and gives fresh im pulse to importation. The result must unoroida bly he the ohms. Those who think otherwise rely upon fresh contributions to our currency which are derived from the gold mines in California. I grant that those contributions may delay a commercial revulsion for a t him, and may manly and break its Illtce when it shall come. lint they ran neither postpone it indefinitely, nor ran they break eta force sothat it will bare the country heirmle,s. Whet tr influ ence of those contri miens upon commercial f i be the limits or the iriti vulaions in mere op culntion. After the severe revulsion of 1837, produced by excessive impor tations, Government returned to a system of protection in 1842, and so restored the prosper ity of the country. Ire shall return to the same policy, for the same \ purpose, in the present ease. The only question Is, whether we shall adopt that policy as a preientive, or wait until the distemper has become otherwise incurable. I am for npplying protection now. Nevertheless, I stand alone. Congress is not prepared to raise the duties upon imports. AU that, remains for me'is to do all that I can to prevent the reduc tion of those duties." KEZPINO POTATOES IN WlNTElL—Potatoes spoil in winter, if buried, from three causes. First and greates , want of ventilation. Second ly, and nearly allied, dampness. Thirdly, and more rare, freezing. Farmers find most of their potatoes spoiled at the to of the heap; where they suppose they became frozen; but this is not the usual cause, the damp, foul, foul, steamy air ascended there, and could not escape, and this spoiled them. A bole made in the top, with a crowbar, and closed with a wisp of straw, would have allowed egress to the confined air, and saved the potatoes. The best way to secure potatoes out-door; is to take large heads, say fo'; or GO bushels; see that they are dry and clean, by digging before wet weather comes on, cover them all over with one foot of packed straw, and three inches of earth. The straw will prevent dampness, and the few inches of earth will favor ventilation. A farmer who raises many potatoes, and practices this mode, does not lose aTeck, on the average, in 50 bushels. HENS Aso Eaos.—For several years past. I have spent a few weeks of the latter part of Au gust on the Kennebec river, in Maine. The lady with whom I have stopped is a highly no. complislied and intelligent housewife. She sup ports a "hennery," and from her. I derived my information in this matter. Sho told me that for many years she had been in the habit of ad ministering to her-hens with theircommon food, at the rate of a teaspoonful of cayenne pepper each alternate day, to a dozen fowls. Last sea son, when I was with her, each morning she brought in from twelve to fourteen eggs, having but sixteen bens in all. She again and again experimented in the matter, by omitting to feed with the cayenne for two or three days. The consequence invariably was, that her product of eggs fell off to five or six per day. The same effect of using the. cayenne is produced in winter as well as in the summer.—‘fforten Transcript. VALUE or STD..% Is MAIIIIIIES.—It is found by careful cherni al examination, that different , kinds of straw po ess quite different values, to work up into m nure. This relative value is very nearly determined by the quantity of sini trogen they cont in. Barley straw is the poorest of all; oat and o straws are about one-third better; wheat is early double in value to barley; buckwheat is rater better than wheat; meadow bay or corwatal are far ahead of any of these, being five times s rich in nitrogenas barley straw; and red lover hay and pea-straw are . . imes as riCh as ba;ley. Whether' are mixed directly with,man-, by animals, they produce their each about eight 1 these substances l i ure, or eaten firs relative elect. t PiGS AND HMI NIL-Mr. Bins, of the Wash, ington Globe, is in New York, and occasionally .favors his friend with some sententious critic,- isms on our municipal affairs. Here is his last view: . . • don't believe in this feeding the poor from the public crib. • I always noticed when wo used to feed the hogs from a Drib down.in •Virginia, ' two or three big hogs got all the corn and did well, and the rest got lean, but they all stand in the lane where the corn wan thrown, and never put their nose to the ground to help themselves the whole winter. But those that were turned out and not •fed from the crib went off to the woods, and In the spring were all fat as butter, and their tails curial so. tight that they could hardly get their hind legs on the ground. It, is the same with men as with pigs; you must make them root for themselves and not teach them! to go to the crib."—N. T. Evening Poet. SOBGVII Sonar AND FBOST.—A Dr. Hollings worth, of lowa, left . with the editor of the Gate City, the other day,a jar of syrup made from the canes after they had been touched by the frost.' The editor says: "The flavor would seam to be substantially improved by the frost, and rendered very similar to maple syrup, but. the color is darker." • Tom-Jersey Shore Bank and Lewiaburgh Bank - tare commenced operations.
