THE VALUE Or INDIAN Cons.—For the fol. loWing interesting informalion in regard to this little understood kind of food, we are indebted to Hunt's Merchants' Magazine:— "By those who do not know, or who are too scientific to profit by the experience of nations of men and herds of fat cattle, Indian corn, rice, buckweat, &ie., are only considered 'good fod der.' Liebig states that it' we were to go naked as the Indians, or if we were subject to the same degree of cold as the Samoiedes, we should be able to consume the half of a calf and a dozen candles at a single meal! During excessive fatigue in low temperature, wheat flour fails to sustain the system. This is owing to a dery eiency in the elements necessary to supply ani mal heat, and the strong desire for oleaginous substances, under these circumstances, has led to the belief that animal food is necessary for human support. Bpt late scientific experiments, and a better acquaintance with the habits of the North American Indians, have shown that a vegetable oil answers the mete purpose as animal food; that ono pound of parched Indian corn, or an equal quantity of cornmeal, made into bread, is more than equivalent to two pounds of fat meat. • "Meal from Indian corn contains more titan four times as much oleaginous matter as wheat flour; more starch, and consequently capable of producing more sugar, and though less gluten, in other important compounds it contains nearly as much nitrogenous material. The combina tion of alimentary compounds in Indian corn, renders it alone the mixed diet capable of sus taining man under the most extraordinary cir cumstances. In it, there is a natural coalescence of elementary principles which constitute the basis of organic life, that exists in no other veg etable product ion. In ultimate composition, in nutritious prstiertiea, in digestibility, and in its adaptation to the varied necessities of animal life in the different climates of the earth, corn meal is'capable of supplying more of the abso lute wants of the adult human system than , any other single substance in nature." It F. a ct , T roil vile Crucci.to. Editoec: The llocsiers in and about this locality have most of us given up the idea of raining plums. The cueeulio is the worst enemy. The plan I am now pursuing is ,this: I put all my plum, nectarine and apricot trees by themselves; let them grow imp-wird; enrich the soil, taking care to give the trees plenty of salt, awl in n sandy soil as mine is, liberal dressings of clay. After the trees are largo enough to bear, let the hogs use the lot from the time the frees blossom till the plums are ripe. Protect the trees from the hogs by setting three or four small stnkla imme diately about the tree, secured by ropes, bark or nails, as is most convenient. The hogs will take care of nil plums and their contents as they fall, and otter the first season the plum crop is a sort one. This mode has been frequently recommended, but followed out in practice by but few Why it is so I can't see, for certainly it is simple, and perfectly efficacious for the fruits mentioned above, as well as for cherries, which suffer from the eurculio. A tree grown close to the walk or door, where it is frequently shaken by people passing, will also perfect its fruit every year. There is a tree growing in town, planted by my brother (Lyman Brackett) thir teen years ago, which for the past ten years has net missed one season, perfecting a fine crop of fruit. It is almost or quite in the path_ The consevence is that the ground tiling hard trod den, refuses acces to the worms, if any are hatch ed en the tree, and but few egg are deposited in the growing fruit, because the treeis subject ed to frequent shakings by people passing. Let all them who love good fruit plant Record ing to the plans aboye described, and I will war rant a perfect exempt ion„from this pest. C. BRAC ETT I?orhester, Fulton Co., bd..
