"NOW CLEAR. In' coon MEADOWI9.—Mirty of our farmers are not able to avail themselves of the use of harvesting machines, from the fact that their mowing lands are so full of obstruc tions in the shape of snags, bushes, stones, logs, etc., that a mowing machine cannot safely tra verse them. The same is also true of much wheat land that might otherwise bo operated upon with a reaper. The manifest destiny of labor in this country Is driving our farmers into the use of the labor-saving implements, and they must get their farms ready for them. 'This is not a good season for burning stumps. The weather has been so wet, that tires will not hang. But we cannot say that we should be sorry, for, as a general thing, this burning is a great damage to the land. Last year there were thousands of acres of rich soil, within the cir cuit of our travels, burned to the very bone, end the accumulated fertility of ages swept off in a day. Fire is a good thing in its place, but yen might as well suffer a hungry dog in your sheep pasture, as to let fire eat up the richest of your land. Co in with a stout pair or two of oxen or steady horses, dig about a little, get a good leverage, and rip out the stumps and snags by the roots: Snake off the logs, glean the - sticks, and pitch all together in a place where fire will do no harm, and when they are dry enough, barnthem up. Gather up theloose boul ders and have them out of the way of the knives and sickles, and then you can use a machine with pleasure and profit.—Ohio Cultivator. Sere Tux Soor.—This, though generally thrown into the street and wasted is one of the best manures. It is extensively used in England, and when only 15 or 20 bushels are applied to the acre, it induces the most luxuriant crops of wheat, and other grains. It contains, in small compass, almost all the ingredients of the coal or wood used for fuel. It also contains several salts of ammonia, magnesia, lime and muriatic acid. Its components are the natural food or stimulants of plants, and it can he used to great advantage as a concentrated•fertilizer, to stimu late germinating seeds in the drill. It is not only sown broad-cast with the grain, hut it is applied to the root crops with the best results. Potatoes and carrots, especially, aro benefitted by it. Six quarts of soot to a hogshead of water make an excellent liquid manure for the garden. It can he applied with safety to all garden crops, and will pay well for saving. In putting the stoves, furnaces and fire-places in order for Winter, hear it in mind, that soot is valuable, and will be wanted for Spring use. One, two, -three or more barrels can be saved easily in most families, especially where wood is burned. Eiganto WANTED IMMEDIATE!.
