FRIDAY MORNING, OCT. 28, 1857 aluotar, worrint of Run rust OP Till raosc. tie to eitee Oinuatry- We published yesterday an able article from a German paper In Chicago, advising every one whO is able to 'scrape together the means to seek immediate homes in the west. The advice is sonatina seasonable; and althotigh it may not be welcome to the ears of many, we cannot, in duty, avoid endendng ft. One of the drawbacks upon this country, for years Net, has been the tendency of population from the country to the towns, Instead of from the towns to the ommtry. We have, In conse quence, had too many consumers and too few producers. Fanners, instead of educating their sons to the plaw and their daughters to' domestic duties, have sought to make professional and mercantile men of • their bays, and to fit their dtughters for more splendid marriages than the country can afford Mark It has code to be thought more honorable, somehow, to be a mer chant or profosaional man, or to be the wife of one or the other, than to be a plain farmer or farmer's wife. It is a sad mistake and one which cannot be too soon corrected. We like to see men 'and women well educated; but it the education they get turns their heads and unite them for, the practical and every way honorable life of the farmer, It were far better that they should not be educated at all. Every profession In the country is overstocked; and the uncertainty of mer cantile life was never better illustrated than be the present wrecked condition of our national commerce and industry. It will be a happy thing for the country, eventually, if that wreck drives hundreds of thousands to the plow, and deters as many more from leaving it. Not that the professions and mercantile life are not in all respect .{honorable, as callings; but they are more Outikabruidantly supplied, while our agri cultural Interests are comparatively neglected. The present depression in business affords a grand opportutdty for restoring the equilibrium between town and country. In every city there are, today large numbers of men who can get no employment and who have no prospect or getting any. _Many of these are men who have saved a little money . , and hen it at ready com mand. To stay' in the city, doing nothing, is imply to eat up and destroy these savings, and save themselves helpless in the end. Why not take what they have, go west, buy a cheap farm, (for cheap farms are now plenty everywhere,) and move their families at once! Every family ..thus.remoyed helps to relieve those who are com pelled to remain behind. If the number of un employed versant' (Mold thus be materially reduced, there would be a better chance of obtaining employment by those who cannot get away. Then there are, besides, many workingmen and mechanics in our midst who have prudently already obtained homesteads As the west, either by direct purchase or by the location of laud warrants. These should lose no time in getting away. They have nothing to do here, and they ought to be on their farms, preparing for the enjoyment of the competence that awaits them. In fact, every man who has the means, and who is not burdened with the management of a besiness he cannot iret rid of, should seek the botiom of the country for that rest which the cities now denies him In this way and in this way only can production be brought up to its proper point, and the resources of the country be made equal to Its emergencies. We most hare more producers, more farmers—more men to develop. the real strength of the country; and then, by end-by, we shall be able to cope successfully with evils more giant like, oven, than those which now assail us. This may.aeem odd talk to those who think - that towns and cities with enormous and con stantly inerreesing populations are the stay and ' support, as well as the great boast of our go ahead nation ; • but we are content to abide by the result, of-our advice, and I. see the towns and cities rennin stationary awhile, until the country has time to catch up with them. One cannot get along without the other; and the city, therefOre, cannot afford to distance the country in the race of progress. If their growth is not mutual and equal it is not natoral. The one that - rushes ahead impetuously will, in the end, have to wait till its companion over takes it. tdaseavirra A liiiintritermunue Bali.—As ' we were led to anticipatei the public wee baulk ed. yesterday, in their desire to hear a thorough vvvtvination of the facts in the caw of this bank against O'Connor &Bro. Tha latter, after putting in a reply to the charges of the bank, (which was not sworn to;) announced their ap plication for thfcbenelit of the insolvent laws, and an end was put to the whole proceedings. „The result of this movement, as we understand it, is, that the Bank retains the 1125,000 of se- cnrities at first transferred to it by the firm, while those put into the hands of Mr. Ihmsen N; to be transferred to the Bank when the accounts were adjusted, go with the other assets into the hands of the trustees to be appointed by the Court; and' the Bank will get inertly its per (tentage along with the - -other creditors of the Jf Illrut. How this application for the benefit of the Insolvent laws can be made to tally with the published declaration that the firm was able and ready to make good Its account with the Bank. It is not very easy to perceive. The proceedings In Court, with the statement of Mr. O'Connor, will be found in our local column. We have refrained, hitherto, from making any comments on the facts developed in thin case, no far as they affect the character of .the bank, because we wished to see, first, a full legal in vestigation into the facts, and because, second, the interference of the press ,might be thought inimical et : injudicious. .But, under the changed state of the case, we fed more free to allude to ; and we trait we shall net be thought offi cious or meddlesome in suggesting to the Direc tors that, they owe to the public as well as to the Bank an early,. full and frank statement of its condition, coupled with such answer as they may think proper to the statement of Mr. O'- Connor. As things now stand, the public is led to look with distrust upon its notes, (without =good reason; weihink,) and If the Bank Is to go on, (as we trust it may,) the confidence if the public cannot too soon be secured. The Hires ion, we feel assured, will.look at this matter as we do and' concur with as in the propriety as well as necessity otputting the Bank right be fore the public andoballenging ocrolidenee by an unreserved statement of all that it Is proper for the public to know, Orrrorsz. returns from thirty counties in Pennsylvania, show the following vote for Gor e:Es at the late election;—Packer 126,090 Wllmot, 89,885: Hasiehurst, 24,784. The Richmond Whig, in alluding to the subject, gays: "The Democracy have the power to carry out all their projects. . They have possession of the Federal Government and nearly all the State Goverzunenti. Why, then, do they not quit talking, and proceed to work? Let us have their "hard money" currency. Let us have it forthwith. For one, we shall hold them to their theory, and demand that they reduce it to prac tice. They have been talking about a "hard money" currency for scores of years, and the country is not yet blessed with it, although they hare the power to do whatever they please. We repeat—let them quit talking and clamoring, and give us hard money, nothing else, and plenty of it. We suggest that our approaching Democratic Legislature should lead off in the glorious revolution. It is the boast of the Virginia Democracy that their policy invariably becomes the policy of tho Democracy through out the Union. It is fitting then that our Virginia Solon should take the lead in' this hard money matter--and it is their bounden duty." York Cosukty—Olkelal. •• Repub. Governor—Wilmot 1778 Packer.. 5314 Can.
