THE EILITIEH . 1085E9.910N9 Lv Isms.—When we read of China, of Hindustan, orof any of the countries smogs tie world, we are apt Micas eight of their Tad extent and to conaldir all the cities in them as near each other, .people as similar, eta. This feel ing we believe is almost universal at the first thought, and it is only by talking a map cud looking over it carefully and observing the mighty.rirers and vast seas and mountains that we come at last to a realizing pens& of spaces and distances, where different nations with Various langUligeS, COMM; complexions and habits dwell. For example, we have hardly well defined in our minds the extent of the English possessions in India. Now that the awful doom of the mis sionaries, the European generals and otheroffi cers in British-India has come like a thunder clap upon us, we begin to look about us and see the prospect for the future, and then the mighty work.whieh is to be done to bring bask under English sway the vast dominions which an htin dred years have given them and a day hu apps rently snatched away, becomes manifest. Great Britain•bu Ilse hundred military stations in her possessions in Asia. Those possessions extend from the months of the Ganges to Afghanistan, and from the Himalaya mountains to Nagpore. A better defined Idea may be obtained of tho ex tent of this country when wo state on the au thOrity of a book recently published in England by the old Indian General Briggs. a book quoted by the London Fumes and Blackmoif, that British power bad bean established at the time of The late revolt over a country nearly equalling in extent and considerably exceeding in population the united possessions of France, Austria and Prussia in Europe. The comparison stands thus: • Equ Mee. pabalm:. Bengal 412,627 6 Pa 9,40,299 North West Pr0vin0th.....100,889 88,742,766 518,016 93,188,065 ..201,961 85,788,170 ...884,470 - 52,081,808 /odds and Prussia. 666,481 87,864,978 Or to bring the matter nearer home, we may say that this revolt is likely to break out in a territory more than eleven times as large as the whole State of Pennsylvania, and in a popula tion more than three times as numerous as the whole population of the United States. In fact, over the greater part of this vast territory the rebellion has extended already, and day by day its march is onward into remote provinces among other peoples, until one looks aghast as he inquires what shall the.. end of these things be. Lux run PEOPLE REMEXHIN: that every man on the Democratic ticket unites with Mr. Do• MASAN in declaring that slavery-exists in Kan sas under the Constitution of the United States —and that it can be abolished there only by a State constitution endorsed by Congress. Let the people remember that they also de clare that tho elaveholder niay take his Duman Property into any Territory of the United States under the protection of the- Federal Constitution. Let the people remember that they also declare that if the people of any free Territory shall endeavor to protect themselves from the intro duotion of slavery by the Southern propagan dists, the U. B. army shall be brought into re quisition to antra than with powder and ball. Let the people remember that they further de clare that there cannot be a foot of free territory belonging to the United &mai except at the op tion of the slaveholder, inasmuch as it is the doctrine of the Dred Scott decision, and President lituoutusts'e Sitlimaa latter..tbai slavery may be taken foto any Territory under the protection of ,the_Pedirel Cinetitutlon 1 Lathe people remember that they are also in favor of having the bogus Lure of the bogns Le_ giaLsture of Kansas, sleeted by Missouri votes, and in violation of all legal form and right, en forced by the Government droops at eh/spoke of the bayonet Let the people remember thit the candidates On this ticket are all in favor of exacting the infamocu tax levied by Missouri ruffians on the people of fiatuias for tho purpose of paying those ruffians for hunting to death, harassing and mur dering the free Elting settlers of Kansas. These are pretty 'elle*, to profess oppoettion to taxa tier' here. Let it be remembered that every vote cast for any part of the Democratic ticket is a blow at the Freedoss of the Territories, and a Itab at the soapsoatrajpnty of the Free Stater ! Pionises.—The looofoco Fernando Wood, Mayor of New York City, was going to retrench • and reform all matters of finance in that city when he was elected. He was a terrible fellow on •'taxes," just as that promising set of fellows calling th.mselves "Democrats" are with us to day. There wan not a guile ignoramus that could pronounce the name of "Wild" but could also ado that free rum and no taxes were to come along with his election. Very well; the free rum is there but the report of the City Comptroller shows the following to be the cor rect state of the finances: The permanent debt of the city is $16,600,000, of which two-thirds is wholly unprovided for, and $8,000,000 of it to em paid on the dust of January. Temporary debts swell the gross amount to $18,000,000, on which 'the Comptroller paid interest on the first of-August. Additions to this debt are author ised for the Central Park, the new Reservoir and a new City Hall, which may increase the whole to more than twenty millions; in view of which the Comptroller says that "the property.holdere have "prospect before them of an over-shad owing debt and a rapid Increase of the present crushing taxation." Mow when this celebrated Wood was made Mayor the tax levy of the city was $4,4 . 41,265, He has "retrenched" and "enconomized" it up to its present amount, viz : For the year 1857, $0,068,660,52. I Cotatninsioner, put on the record his protest against it. This was last Spring—we have not the date before us, but it is immaterial. We have just seen the precept homed by the Commissioners for the levy of this tax, to one Of the Assessors and Collectors in the county, bear beg date July 7, 1867—subsequent to theprotest mentioned above—and appended to that precept is the name of JACOB Teams! Welavenodoubt he signed all of them, in like Manner, So, then, we have Mr. Tomer, for Buncombe, putting a protes , on the record against the tax, and then signing the official authority to the As sessors, authorising and directing them to levy and collect the very tax he protested against! le not this locorocoism, bcautifully.exemplitlee Mr. TOMER, like Hawaiss and M'llar.asr, takes both eider, of the same question, exercising good care to make one prominent, while the other is kept as much under cover as possible. The people will be deceived if they trust such men. Only One Working Week Lett We appeal to the working ARepublicans of Allegheny County that, they improve to the ut moit the little remaining time that intervenes before election. If your Township Comottees to briis voters to the polls and to guard the polls from illegal voting, are not yet appointed, lose no time in selecting them. If your town ship oganisations are not• thoroughly effected,- proceed at once, without delay, to make them as complete as possible—so that en the morning of the election every man may be at his poet. Organize thoroughly. See ,to it, that a :ary Republican voter is at the Polls. Bets that no illegal votes are admitted. Have, your teams and committees ready to bring in every delinquent voter. In a word, Ronk for the good cause, as you know how to work, and we will aohieve an easy and glorious victory. Remember that our opponents are aotive, day and night. Every Democratic vote In the Coun ty will be out ; and to make 'our success com plete every Republican voter must do his duty. Once more we beg of you, one and and all, to go to work vigorously, earnestly, and without ceasing, until viotory crowns your efforts. TUX MTAIRIM/1 or TUX KANSAS 0038TITLITIORAL CONVENT/0X SWORN TO FORM A PRO-SLAVERY Cossurrrioa.—The Lecomptort correspondent of the N. T. Tutus, who was elected by the Kansas Constitutional Convention official report er, and who, from his confidential relations with Gov. Walker, is behind the scenes, writes that "there can be no possible reason for supposing that. the Constitution will be other than Pro- Slivery. The wellknown and openly avowed sentiments of the delegates, who are Pro-Slavery to a man, is sufficient guarantee for that. And I have even heard on what I deem good authori ty, that at a preliminary caucus of the members of the Convention an oath to support or vote for no Constitution that was not Pro-Slavery was required of every one present, and was unhesita tingly taken by thirty-four." A CAUTIOUS Eorron--The 11'ational Intelligen ce, says that one of its Virginia contemporaries has felt itself constrained to abstain from join ing in the condemnation of the alleged "atroci ties in India,".on the ground that it has not yet seen " the first admission, on the pare of the Se pop themselves, that these excesses existed at all," and has not yet received their "exposition of the reasons of the revolt." This is a prudent and cautions fellow; he probably hails from Penn sylvania, where they teach Democratic editors not to believe anything that does not 00/1311 en• dorsed kith democratic authority. It is also a question of freeler. ritory *gallon Slave Territory. Tux financial troubles were rather inoreased to-day in coneeluenee of the auspenelons of two eminent commercial houses, via: Lawrence, Stone & Co., Chouteau, Sanford & Co. These gentlemen have long been considered among the ..merchant princes" of the Eastern cities, and [ heir credit up to this date haa stood as high as [hat of any individual's that could be named.— their failure may be looked upon en a public paternity; the damage-stustained does not affect merely their creditors. This in but a small part of the loss. It is' tho thousa.ide of operatives viho will suffer in the towns of Lowell, Lawrence and other manufacturing towns, where the mills must either suspend business or work on short lime only. Similar effects will be felt at and near Philadelphia, Trenton, Wilmington, Balti more, and at the North in Springfield, Provi dence, Hartford, Fall River, Buffalo, Rochester, Troy, Albany, and at every manufacturing place, without exception. The masses have ig norantly canned nearly all of this financial trouble by a foolish run upon the banks for gold, as if any bank could sustain for a day a drain upon Weir deposits and circulation. It will then be the manses upon whom the reaction will take place. A few weeks will demonstrate to them that the very bank notes ehich they now scorn to touch, or hurry to exchange for gold, will be needed for actual subsistence. The country re quires-every dollar of the bank circulation now out, for the ordinary exchange or trading oper. aim of the time; and the contraction of ten millions in circulation has already lessened the market values of property fully .one hundred millions in this State alone. Similar results are produced in Massachusetts, Rhrode Island and New Hampshire, Pennsylvania etc. Labor, (both male and female) hitherto so amply rewarded, will for a new or two be less in demand and less liberallrpaid. These re mulls are not seen or foreseen yet by tite million, of laborers in this country—but time—a very short time, will bring it about. The London Timm in a late number alludes to the facility with which credit can be destroyed by evil minded persons, where there is no prompt legal redress. That paper says: "Nothing is easier than to ruin s bank, and In England, in consequence of this facility, sash attempts are classed with the worst of fences. At thietnoment two persons are lying ip Newgate for endeavoring indirctly in a par. denier case to excite public distrust, and, al. though one of them was a man of respectability, who acted upon a fancy that he bad been per sonally injured, no one has been found to utter a complaint of the sovereity of the sentence.
