Their extraordi nary reduction of discounts after-the failure of Cate Ohio Life and Trust Company some weeks ' since wus undoubtedly the origin of the panic, , whichhassince become soserious, so wide-spread and so disastrous. The Journal. says: "We wish now to see the New York Banks abandon the cowardly course they have pursued I -of late and repair, so far as they can, the injury I they have done. The pretence for the - sudden I and extraordinary reduction in discounts is preservation, and we agree that this is an Wiper tant consideration, but if we allow it to be the only consideration, the question arises whether the best mode to be adopted to that end is such a sudden curtailment of discounts as to spread alarm from one end of the country to the other, or whether it is better to sustafn their debtors by giving all the aid in their power and thus preventing a panic, ao easy to be raised, and the effects of whichno matt can tome. le the week after the failure of Ohio Life and Trust Com pony, a little caution on the part of the New York Banks was commendable. They required that much time to see their 'way; bat when they found everybody standing firm, the monetary alarm subsiding, their circulation and deposits nuditainished, their specie reserve increased and increasing, the very doctrine of self-preservation dictated aliberal handed policy—a discount of their receipts. I ; From a careful survey of the whole premised, vde feel justified in saying that for all that has happened and for all that has yet to come of evil the New York City Banks are alone responsible. For their continued cutting off after the first week above named, they have not the shade of reason to offer. They never were stronger, nev er in abetter position. Their specie do band a great deal more than covered their whole circu lation. There was no important demand upon it from any quarter, and yet, in the face of these facts, they continued a steady course of retrench merit till, in four weeks, they bad called in fif teen millions. This course of action crest"l alarm, doubled the number of anxious borrowers in the street, caused paper to be sent home to Boston, Philadelphia and Baltimore, and sold at ruinous rates, gave them balances against those cities which were exacted in specie, thus weak ening their Banks and spreading the alarm far and wide. A part of the effects we have seen ; what more remains to come is beyond our ken, for when people get thoroughly frightened they will throw looking glasses out of chamber win dows. No panic within our . remembrance ever had so email a starting point; no one has ever been so enlarged and widely apread by a selfish, cowardly policy; no one could hare been so ea sily checked and smothered by a bold and manly COl/11,0." FRIIT INATEA D or kismet:sr.—There is no doubt but that the use of good fruit is 'highly conducive to heclth, and indeed almost indis pensable to it. Much of the sickness in the western country is occasioned by the want of it. It is the scarcity of good fruit that creates such a demand for physic in our western country. The various fevers and bilious disorders preva lent in the summer season are more owing to the want of good fruit than any other cause. And not until; fruit is generally cultivated and used as an article of diet shall we be rid of these dis orders, which are sapping the life tonutains of thousandX of our farmers annually. And if fruit were adMinistered, instead of the physician's prescript*, we have no doubt it would be far better for the patient. Nature !in this, as in all other respects, hoe bountifully supplied .us with varieties, which, if properly cared for, will enable es to enjoy a sue% cession throughout the year. But fruit is not only a necessary of life—it is one of its greatest luxuries. What is more enticing to the palate than luscious fruit? And as an article of diet, nothing equals it. It is easily raised, costs but little, promotes health and is loved by every enc. ' Most people content themselves by cultivating but tin or threevarieties. This should not he so. Fruit is more needed throughout the summer season than almost any other part of the year. And the sarieties which ripen at this time are less cultivated. The farmer cannot take a step which will add more to his own joys, and those of his own tastily, than by having such a suc cession us will furnish him with fruit the entire year.—Saint of :he " - Tur Moil steamer on the Pacific side which connected with the lost Central America was the Son,ra. she left Sea Francisco or. the 20th of Anent, and arrived at Panama on the 28 of September The papers brought -yesterday by the Star rr' as War do not give tar the list-ad-her pramenger.i, from which wo should be able to learn the Borneo of all those from California wmo were lost with the Central Arierica. This hat, is feared, cannot be obtained until the arrival of the steamer connecting with that of Oct. 20, from Stan Francisco, due here about the lath or 14th of November. We learn, however, from the California papers, that the Sonora left San Francisco with fear itundrrd cod forty Jour passengers. The Aspin wall Count", in noticing the departure of the Centre! America, from that port, says that she carried out four hundred anciforty-five fa:severs. By an examination of the list, it will be seen that twenty-eight of these were from the Isth mus; the balance, therefore, (4160 of the Cen ral Amcrica's passengers were from California. We learn from the San Francisco papers that a very small mail was dispatched in the Sonora on Aug. 20. The San Frauciaco Alta puts the mail down as composed of one hundred and two mall bags, containing, besides newspapers thirty-eight thousand letters. Of this amount, the Sacr“mentii Union states that thirty-ftve bags of mail matter were forwarded from the Post- Office of that city. Several of these bags were destined for New-Granada and the South Pacific_ States. The remainder, amounting' probably to ninety-six or ninety-eight bags, were placed on board the Central America, which, in addition to the Isthmus and South American moils, made a total of 104 bags on board the lost steamship. This again has been a less serious loss than was anticipated.-1. Y. Times. THE EVANGELICAL ALLIANCE,—The Evangeli cal Alliance commenced its sittings at, Berlin on the 19th of September.
