[Loud and protracted chatting.] The toast hissing been duly honored; Dr. Palmer, of the Niagara, having been loudly called on, returned thanks for the manner in which the toast had been drunk. These things happened in the afternoon and in the evening there eras a grand display of fireworks. The ships with their wonderful freight having arrival, on WEIMPSDAY, TUE STH OP August, at 2 o'cluek, it was decided that en effort should be made to land the cable at once. Theprocess of- uncoiling into the small home commenced at 2i. and the scene at Mb. period was grand and exciting in the highest degree. Valentin, Bay was sledded with innumerable small craft, decked with the gayest bunting—small boat.. flitted hither mad thither, their oceepants cheering enthusiastically as the work successfully programed. The cable-boats were managed -by the sailors of the Niagara and Susquehanna, and it was swell-design ed compliment, and indicative of the future fraternir alien of thematic.= that the shore-rope was arranged to tie presented at this side the Atlantic to the repre sentative of the Queen, by the officers and men of the United Stated navy, and that at the other-side British officers and sailors should make a similar presentation to the President of the great Republic. "From the main land the operations were watched with intense interest. For several hours the lend Lieutentant stood on the beach, surrounded by hi' staff and the directors of the railway and telegraph coinpardes waiting the arrival of the cable, and when at length the American sailors Jumped through the surge with the hawser to which it was attached, his Excellency was among the first toTay hold of it and pull It lustily to the chore. Hon. A. K. MeWrite has been nominated for the legislature by the Republicans of Pninklin county. We are glad to hear of it. If elected, as wo trust he will be, his talents and excellent business capacity will render him one of the most useful members of the Rouse. THE GriIEItNATOILIAL ELECTION.—On yester day we received the official vote in one or two additional counties, and corrected as well as returns from eotho others. They are all incorporated in our table. By the footings up of the two columns, Rollins now has just 300 majority over Stewart, withrthe counties of But ler, Ripley, and Shannon to hear from. If our reports from unofficial sources prove true, we feel convinced that Major Rollins will be found to be elected; if our surmise in regard to the counties of Dent and Texas are confirmed, he will have quite a margin to go upon. What frauds the nullifiers may have still under the rose, of course we cannot predict; but we do reiterate the belief wo have expressed all along, and say that without fraud we believe Rollins will not be defeated.—St. Lout, Dem., Friday. ATCHISON ENCOCRAGED —Sometime ago Atch ison was represented as giving up Kansas to the people as a free State. Now, however, the pro gress of the Buchanan and Walker "pacifiCa tion" has been so shrewdly managed in the slavery interest,-that ho feels encouraged to ex pect that she will he made a slave state. As is his wont, he goes further than is necessary, or any one believes, and says a large majority of ! the voters are pro-siovery men. The men who have succeeded Atchison in engineering this fraud, do not pretend this; they tickle the peo ple by telling them privately that Kansas must be a free State anyhow, and then plot to cheat them out of it.
