MoK.INNEr SNODGRASS. of Mifflin The project of connecting Europe with Amer ica by laying a telegraphic; cable scrota the At lantio—one end touching at Valenti!' Harbor on thucoast of Ireland, the other at Trinity Bay, Newfoundland, is now• being tested. Our last advices from Europe bring us the in telligence that the steamers designated for this great undertaking had each their allotment of cable on board, and would Bail about the 8d of August front Cork harbor. • Each vessel has . over 1,200 miles of cable en board. This is about els hundred miles more than the measured distance between the two points, and is intended to meet any emergency that may arise to. prevent the vessels steering an exact course to the tidy or Newfoundland. It is expected that the cable will be laid at the rate of 120 Miles per day; at this‘rate, if no accident occurs, it will be completed about the 20th of this month. Ina very @holt time, then, we may expect to hear of the success or failure of this stupendous enterprise, and one which, if successful, will most signally mark the 19th century as the ago of wonders. From the great cure, combined with the greet practical and scientific skill which have hod the direction and oversight_pf the wholoinatter, it to succeed, end we trust that it when we. consider the innumerable difficulties that are in the hidden path of this undertaking, difficulties that-are beyond the eye, and which science, with all her ••deep sea soundings," has bnt in a most imperfect and unsatisfactory man ner been able to explore and investigate, we are reluctantly drawn to the conclusion that success is very problematical. The cable is made of Berea copper wires, in sulated with gutta percha, These conducting wires aro placed together and are wrapped with 18 strands of seven thread iron wire. We behre that the combination of these two metals in tho construction of the cable was unwise, be musd their ductility is spout as four to fire in f, r of the copper.. The copper being the moat ductile would learn the strain under theimmense tension to which it will be enitojected on the .roe wire which makes two whole turns to the foot, and will compress and cut into the gutta percha core containing the conducting wires. It becomes then a serious and most Important question as to whether the .gutta perch& core will bear a pressure of seven or eight thousand pounds to the square inch without being com pressed or altered so as do destroy the perfect insulation of the conducting wires. If pressure will alter the form of the core, the investing wire will become loos* and the strain will be upon the straight copper wire—this may yield withoutbreaking, but will the guttapercha yield in the sumo proportion, or at a. rote so es not to displace ordlenutle any part of the con ducting wire through, their entire length of 2000 miles? We think this is hardly possible. DANOXII Nr TIIE CABLE PAIITING. The cable is light and flexible, and for its size posserres great strength ; but is it strongenough to bear the tremendous strain to which it must necessarily be subjected in the operation of lay ing it t The line of the great circle_surveyed for the route is perhaps the most favorable that: could be selected.—The greatest depth obtained mid atlantic is about 25000 fathoms, Men, tritA sound ing. repealed every fifty miles, there is a gradual lccrease either way, until 800, 400 150, Pith war is found. It will be perceived by ibis exploration that much is left to 'conjecture and. then the regulating the prying out of cable be comes at once more Apparent and coinpliettted. We ere 'aware ihio ditfidnlfy has been foresm.n, and mechanical contrivances have been invented and arc new being used to compenaxte and relieve in a measure this great strain, but when we consider our Imperfect knowledge of the deptlrand bed of the ocean at every point in this line, we must teat* perceive that the rate of paying out the cableand the velocity of the vessel must be all guess 'work,-and upon, the accuracy of these two movements depends great ly tire slices' or failure of the enterprise. If It be not paid out fast enough for the depth of the ocean'and velocity of the vessel, the cable will be subjected to a dragging strain, and at some points of . the route it may be required to sustain eight or len miles of its length; when, if the speed ,of the vessel,bp -redoced more or less suddenly to less than te sinking velocity, of the cable, the recoil will travel towards the ship and the strain will be great, but it will be as nothing compared to the rebound which will take place in a moment . afterwards—this will exert a tremendous power and must involve great risk. It would be neeeinntry then to Increase the speed of the resselwlthout attempting to arrest the cable; and when we consider the great ve locity of such a running out, we may justly fear a fatal accident as-well as great waste. • Another danger to be apprehended is the dis position in lines of great length, when paid out from a vessel under sail, to twist. This Loa in sumo cues been obviated by attaching swivels to them. The table will not admit of such tin apparatus; then, as mile after mile goes out, this rotary =Wow will accumulate in the direction This lateral Strain may not be sufficient to break the cable. but Its effect' will be more or less hazardous in proportion as the rotary motion is In the direction- of the coil, or from it. Our last account of the' Manufacture of the cable, complicates still more this difficulty. The' two halves of the cable were Made at different places —one at Birkenhead—the other at Greenwich. The twist of' the spiral wires of the Birkenhead half Is jtmt the reverse of the twist - of tho Greenwich halt, and when they ore jOined in the centre of the Atlantic, the rotary motion al luded to will tend one to untwist, the other, and this expose ilegutta perelu _ aore. Proukthese and'Other mechanical difficulties that might be stated, we are reluotantl,v drawn to the condo skin that de presentundortaking to,connect the two continents of. a cable will 3nost•PrOably PfoTe a failure. ,.., KEISTUCiT LECIIIILAMIX.—it appears that the Amex:kart party : bpi a . majority .or one in, the Fe:dinky Senat e. ::Thlitien or dad arty held : *Ter, and:they. hairs' elected .
