The M owing account of the speech. of Judge Lec.unpte, before the first execution, is graphic fter dinner the inflammatory feeling mill Fovea.. d. and the crowds increased in eize.— J edge.' Locompto finally uppeared upon the 1.1- con y of ,Inn the hotels, and addressed the people. endeavoring to lis.ittade them from vio lence. ecrerel bemired persons wore mewl - tided for a few minutes. and his presence end remarks but adilal fuel to the dame. implored the citizens in God's name 10 Ilea upon what they proposed to do, and ago the prisoners to be punished in the regular ay—through the courts of justice. A dozen voices responded that there Was no .gal justice in Kansasthat the courts were a ree—aml that no man had ever been punished ere for murder. Judge Lecompte :Omitted that no murderer had been convicted, but it was not hi" fault.— There was no man who lured Jolt ire and hated crime mere than he--no one who wan more anx ious to seo the guilty punished. I This remari. brought out Itkra.,l and sneers from every por tion of the crowd.) Tho tr:ills for capital offen ces in Kama" had hithertokfbeen iu.connectien with political affair', in whin part vi feeling wan involved. But thin was not such a case. The prisoners could be put into the hands of the 1 . S..Nlaribal and safely kept. If they were guilty they were the proper parties . to be made an QS.- staple of, and would be punit, hod. If they were not guilty (hey ought not to sutler. This was the course provided fur by the Constitution and Laws of our country, and be trusted that every good citizen would too hie influence to lot the law take its course. A Voice—Wo don't want any more Fugit Another Voiee—A prisoner got clear hero tho :tot day by paying $3. Judge Lecompte—Every man of you who aids the commission of violence, breaks the lawn the land. Von will be liable, under the laws the United States, to indictment for murder. A Voice—lndict and be d--d, then! Ity this time the excitement became uneen trolable. Those who favored lynching began to •co their strength, and were so exasperated at reproof from “Jeffries Lecompte," that very bit ter language was used towards him, and a grand rush was made for the jail. Within ten minutes two thousand men and boys had gathered around the . jail, which is a small stone building, frith very strong doors of wood and Iron. At a short distance from the crowd many women also were lookers on. Judge Locompto again attempted to speak, but a perfect tumult of shouts prevented hint. tiome declared that ho had ruled and wronged peacealtlo citizens too long already. Others said that unless ito refrained front speaking, on ex ample would be made of bus, The Sudgo very wisely withdrew. Another speaker sprang upon some elevated object, and urged that no violence should be used. Ho commanded the peace. lie announc ed that he was the U. S. Marshal, when his coke was instantly drowned by such cries as "Down with him." -.He's the greatest scoundrel in the Territory." "Let's hang him. be deserves it," etc. The Marshal was greatly frightened, and with good reason. 11. turned pato; his voico grew husky, and ho also disappeared in the crowd. Clarkson, the postmaster hero, and a certain Judge Wood, of Lecompton, tfoth attempted to speak, but were dissuaded by their friends.— They are said to be notorious border ruffians, and very obnoxious to Free State men. The crowd was in such an exasperated condition that a few words from any energetic person would have caused their lives to pay the forfeit, had they persisted in speaking. It appears that Quarles is n native of South Carolina, rickens district, and Bays of Points rifle, Johnson county, Kentucky. The latter kept a drinking shop in Leavenworth. Both were hardened wretches. ' Knlghten, who was tirst arrested, and confessed the whole conspi racy,.is a native of Clay county, Indiana, and only '2l years old. Woods, who appears to have boon the chief of the gang, was a native of Tennessee. Thu coun terfeit money was all obtained from him, and he seems to have grown quite rich by robbery and other crimes. These men belong to the swarm of ruffians who have so long terrorized over the Free State men at Leavenworth. TOE PRISONERS REMOVED FROM Le AVENIV 0 RTII. —lt appears that after [Lemon Word and Knigh ton had passed from the hands of the citizens of Leavenworth into the custody of the Sheriff, on Sunday night last, a portion of the crowd were determined to gain possession of them for tie purpose of lynching. On Monday morning ap plication was made to have them secured at the Fort, which was refused, and they were accord ingly locked up in a temporary calaboose at Leavenworth, having the Sheriff and his posse for a guard. The building Rae a small one, and nn upper room was converted into a prison, which was ascended by a flight of rickety wood en stairs. A largo company—numbering four. or five hundred—consistinvprincipally of Ger mans, surrounded this building on Monday; and demanded the prisoners of the Sheriff. The de mand was refused, and the stairs being narrow and dangerous, they were kept at bay until dark on Monday night,' when most of them left the , locality. The Sheriff fiaring is recurrence of the scene on Tuesday, disguised the prisoners and took them out. They were marched to the river whero.lhe steamer Morning Star hail laid up for the night. The yawl of the boat was cut loose and into it the prisoners were placed, and in a short time landed them in Delaware City, where they are now secured and in safe keep ing. On the following day the Morning Star rounded to and took possession of her yawl. - To Richmond Enquirer makes an open breast and declares: "For our oww - p*; w. hive no hesitatinn in expressingpitqpiniongiat- every governot who bits bewtsetitlt Irensu bits Inert instructed to act altettiklylituksetiiak to the South." • A PROVTS3IONAL 1:1114111111 . :-Of 80111.011 has for warded to tho ,Jersey City orettOirkyeieian, whose sands'of life3as - 0 neerly.psn;,-a-caOt fine beech sand to otippl7 th):i.tiounisa , • • - • Judge %V order. "I cannot believe, that the body of the Demo cent ic voters can come to know and appreciate these things without alarm on the subject of' the relations they sustain to the party known as. Democratic. Eor my own part, I have been strongly attached to the Deniocratic party—too strongly to abandon it from caprice or selfishness —too strongly to witness its gradual change from the defence of State Rights to centralism, without vigorous efforts to revive its ancient faith and restore its ancient practice. For years I have seen the party tendency to Southernism find centralism—and within the party organdra- Lion. I have faithfully assisted other Democrats in the endeavor to restrain that tendency. I now give up the task as hopeless. Tam no abolition ist. Prannofanatic. For quite seventeen years I Intre . bacn in the active service of the Demo- cratie party, and in constant association with its worthiest members. The whole number of in fluences to which I have been subject has been unfavorable to the formation of extreme opin ions, intolerant of slavery. But I will not allow my devotion to any party or interest in politics to make me silent, when all the wholesome rules of law, when all its constructions in favor of liberty, aro set aside, to make room for a perver sion of the constitution in the interest of the property in men, and when this perversion, in stead of moving the indignation of the whole country, heroines mutter of addition to the creed of that patty, which I have labored to render prosperous, and which I had once hoped to find always worthy of my devotion and regard. I will not worship the new 1.101 of the Democratic party. I dare not allow my respect for the good tiled true men, who remain with the party, to emother the eentimeent of abhorrence with which I regard the last addition so the creed of that party. No more objectionable, no more vitally dangerous, no more entirely detestable thing. than this, was ever approved by party. I speak': freely, after the manner in which I was taught to speak. by the Democratic party; truly, as I have ever chosen to speak of matters relating to the common weal. -The indorsement by a great party of the derturn in the Drool Scott case, declaring the want of power in the Congress and in the Terri torial Legislature alike, to prevent the introduc tion of slavery, gives that dictum the only great importance which can he attributed to it. That indorsement cuts the throat of popular sover eignty in the territories, and stubs to the heart every compromise made on the subject of sla very, not actually carried into the Constitution of the United States ', What infatuntion possessed the organize.] force of the Dienocratie party when it decide.] to adopt the decision referred to, it- would be difficult to divine. , Does that party give up all respect for popular opinion in Ohio ? •' it is the fixed, true. unalterable faith of the great body et Our people. that the exterteion of elavery into territories now free. tiould be a great and irreparable evil. It is the like fixed. 1 true, tinalteraqe faith of the great body of our people, that there is a remedy, entirely consti tutional. against that extension, in the action of Congers's or in that of the Territorial Legisla ture, when clothed with such poWerstlP Congress may delegate, and such as belong to the very essence of popular government. In this respect, the body of ell parties, the Democratic as well I as the Republican, the American as well other parties, is in harmony with the body of the people, so far as real sentiment is concerned.— Rut the seeming necessity of keeping the poli chins of the North sad Smith together on the subject of slavery, has induced the leaders and organs of the Democratic party, RN now eonsti, toted, to indorse a pretended decision. that no action of Congress, DO action of the- Territorial Legislature, eon prevent the introduction of sin, very into territories now free, since, as now pretended by the mere drawn of a divided court, the slaveholder has a constitutionally gurantied property in his slave, above the reach of terri torial and congressional legislation alike. This indorsement will bo ciinstrued by the South. with 'severe and literal strictness, just as I have stated its terms and its effect. Has not the or ganized force of the Democratic party of Ohie7' then, trampled on the true faith of our people? Will the body of ; the Democratic party counte nance such an outrage? I cannot but think, that resistance to the now doctrine is the first duty of every citizen, and that no notion of the general propriety of adhering to a party in the confidence that it pull correct its own errors through its own Viltherent virtues, can justify any many who truly understands the new addi tion to the doctrines of the Democratic party, in acting with that party, while it asserts what will he found, when honestly scrutinized, so re pugnant to the faith of our fathers, to the inte rests of humanity, and the pride of constitu tional government. . The dearest rights of a citizen demand that a party, which to secure political ascendency, can be thus false to itself and false to the people, should learn the ignominious leseon involved in ignominious defeat. I fervently hope the lesson will be learned at the coming election. It. B. WARDEN. Irish and Germans have entirely engros sed that kind of labor; while an American ser vant, in this section of the country. unless he is colored, is almost as rarely seen as one of Turk ish or Chinese descent. Even in New England, they complain that, the race of Yankees is run ning out, and tho foreigners are taking their places. The Springfield Republican says that their farms are now operated by Irishmen; that tho heaviest classes of manufacturing establish ments have gradually changed the constituents of their operative force, until from seventy to 1 eighty-five per cent. is foreign—lrish, Scotch and German; that in the Glasgow Mills, at Had ley Falls, seventy per cent. of the operatives are foreign, and that in Holyoke the proportion is groater.—N.
