Passn:•arr .Woot.scy.—,No more profound and ,elegant acholar in the Ancient Languages and Literature can be found in this country than the venerable President Woolsey, of Tale College. •There is no use in any one coming before him with shams of learning. The clear and brilliant intellect which has shed a flood of light on the most abstruse books of classical learning, which hu enriched the libraries of the land with the choicest works of the tragic' Muse of Greece and which while employed among the roots of Greek verbs and in discUssing the digamma has not failed in . the - appreciation of those lar • -ger principles . ' of justice and of truth, nor to grasp just conceptions of She rights and duties of man, has turned its brilliant focus upon the wise Judge Daniel, ("a Daniel come to judg i. nt!') and scorched the very marrow out of hm. In the last number of the New Englander, P esident Woolsey in &masterly article explodes t e whole argument of Daniel in the Dred Scott se. The Judge undertook to fortify his posi ti nby frequi - int reference to Roman Law and h story and President Woolsey by showing con el ively that the learned Judge has mistaken t e scope and meaning of the laws, incidents and customs referred to from the bench, has t rued all the batteries of. Daniel against the . 11 use they were intended to defend. It is a sight worth seeing how one by one that , ored Oc. anima tho first principles of right the laws of fi d„ hove been chipped end mined ay; - bow firs: Judge Curtis, thou Judge eLean, then Mlle, I minds learned as ' oolsey in some or all departments of human knowledge, have dissipated the huge mole of error, until . riddled and disfigured, it totters to Its fall, like the walls of some sacked and ruin ed citadel. Even, the Judge from Richmond—a Daniel at that—fails to make his "plea" stand up with the aid of musty precepts drawn from the Pandects of Justinian and the Institutes of the Roman Low. The oracular responses of Del phos would seem to be not less ambiguous than the elaborate digests which bear the stamp and signum of a Roman Emperor of the Iron Age. '• A Daniel come to, judgement" has failed to wring from the fifty books of the civil law a drop of . comfort. At one touch of the true ma gician's wand the whole aspect of the ease is changed and the first precept of Justinianatands forth in all its beauty 7 -"do no wrong to any man." First principles appear - to be lost eight of in the vast mass of "major" and "minor" and "de duclion;" the staging by which men-tlimb up to work upon their edifice of truth becomes io ponderous and complicate, that the• workmen turn from the main building and conclude that the labyrinthine stack of unsightly means is itself the end of their labor. A poor, time-worn, sun and tobacco-dried Judge, nearly all run to seedy offieiality, the pure fresh insight to truth dimmed and blurred by the vast all compre hending web -of precedent and evasion that stretches like the endless band of red-tape around every thing and over every thing he zees, comes on with maudlin eye and green bag to tell the world what God intended and what -Re wishedconcerning all His creation when from tha void of eternity He snake out into life and beauty the great Earth, and bade the stars sing their songs of peace in honor of the new world Such a sight is not in harmony with the good things which God has made: the Halls of Justice have become to these macerated precedent hunters who have kept seat on the wool-sack until its influence has struck upward to the brain,.mere cock-pits of logic, which the fresh and the pure minded of the land, such as Presi dent Woolsey and his compeers in all branches of literature, science and law will find good employment in clearing up. OM "USEQIIALED" INSTITUTIONS.—The Lan caster Intelligeneer, Mr. Buchanan's home organ, abuses Bishop Spir..ay and Dr. M'Cmsrocw in round terms for having dared to allude to Slavery in their addresses before the Irish Wesleyan Conference. Their reference to that national curse of oars is stigmatized as a slander upon '.their own country and its unequaled institu tions!" As.Ameriean Slavery was denounced by Wesley as "the sum of all villainies," we ni t glad not only thaj,.. the Bishop and the Doctor united with Wesley in condemning it, but that the Intelligencer has the grace to admit it to ba "unequaled." It is a fortunate thing for the r ti r\. of the world that they have nothing vila en hto be equal to it. Rear the fneriligencar fun h e~~ 7 .31mm SIXTSON and M'CzeTocu. may think they: are doing God aervic , and we suppose they do; by fulminating their anathe mas directly against slavery end 'laze-holders, and indirectly againseithe great Democracy—the dominant party of this country ;—bat we doubt whether they are in the line of their duty to God or their fellow-men, or whether either the Church or themselves will be benefited by their fanatical zeal in the cause of Abolitionism" It follows, then, that you cannot attack Sla very without aasaultiaz the Denim-racy—in other words that Slavery and Democracy are one and inseparable. It is a very candid and truthful admissson. Consurrer.!"—The somersault.; which the locofoco country editors have to mike on the challenge to Packer and his inglorious back-out, must be exceedingly troublesome and painful to them. But, poor devils: they have no alternative. Hear what the Bedford Gazette said before thechallenge became public: "For some time past the opposition newspapers have been boasting that David Wilmot has challenged Gen. Packer to meet him in debate, and that be de tainee to - ateepL This is simply a gross falsehood, manufactured out of the whole cloth. No such challenge has ever been given. If it had, how easy would it bo for them to give Wilmot's letter, signed by his own name? Gen. Packer is abundantly qual ified to meet any man in Pennsylvania or elsewhere either upon the stump or to the Halls of Legislation, and the :principles which govern and control his political sate MY such se court the light of day.— tilse!uslaia is what we want." "Discussion. is what we want!" That looks very ridiculous, now; sod to erne themselves from any further mortification, of this kind they must hereafter aak Packer's committee what to say and what to do in such cases.— Packer, when challenged or interrogated hate no opinions for the public ear or eye; his sole an swer is, .4p my committee." Tuts Locotocos are afraid to meet Judge Wit mer on the stump, but they are not afraid to lie about him. Someone of their number, who is a living illustration of the doctrine of total deprav ity, gave currency originally to the following slander which the PennsWeanian is base enough to copy and give credit to : • "There is a sentiment ascribed to Judge Wit mer, which sounds like him, and hesnever been contradicted, to the effect that, he was determ ined to arouse the people to the importance of the slavery issue, and get up an organisation through - which they could got control of the Government in '5B ; but, "it' I become satisfied that these efforts will fiat, and that the people will not assert their rights, then I'll be d ; ----d if I don't join the party that I think will send the country to bell the quickest!" The Penntykanian, if it is not stone blind, has seen this vile fabrication contradicted a dozen times; but anything will do wherewith to beeline an opponent they have not the courage to confiont before the people. PAcitca was announced some time sinclzegzppear on the stump at a Clarion county democratic meeting; but as tho State Committee bad not then got him scoured thor oughly, he wee not permitted to attend. As be is now completely caged, the Committee cen show him around safely, hereafter, the faithful being alloWed to gaze at him through the iron bantarhic.h surround him, bat not to approach close enough to talk to or discuss the slavery question with him. A TOEING IX= weal KEIMINI4R, a Iffel=llll, from New Hawm, Conn., committed suicide at Cincinnati on the 6th, in consequenoe of hie In ability to obtain =ploy:nat. ,V5.4 1 44f;t;,:'-"M " .I.ertza Tnomirsom,Ahere is not probably in this State another man whose political record is ea full of duplicity sad tergiversation as is that of James Thempsitn;candidattS of the Locofocos for Supreme Judge. Now we are not going to write an essay. We like two or three facts packed together and whacked plump into the bull's eye, like a cannon ball. In answer to the 'questions! of Goodrich, Sco field, James, Merrill, Clemons and Arnet, committee appointed in 1848 to inquire into his i views on the Wilmot proviso, Thompson said, after quoting his votes for the'Oregon Bill with the proviso: “l'ort will therefore coo that 1 have Awe by my rote. my belief in the POWER or CONGRESS TO PRO OMIT SLAVERY IN TUN TERRITORILS.H . Letier, Sept. 1, 1848.] What did this came man do in 1850! What no other northern.man perhaps, (though there are a good many northern locofocos left) could be found base enough to do; 4e called the premans question on the infamous Fugitive Slave Act, thereby closing the mouths of all its opponents. an act. whieh of itself ought to doom any man to polit ical ignominy. That was James Thompson's Democracy in 1850. What next? Why, this same Wilmot Proviso man of 1848, this Fuyitice-Slave-Lain yagger of 1850, is now gzeat high priest of the Squatter Sovereignty Democracy: he has been tried and found willing in the dark day of Slavery'. rule, and with its placard blazoned on his back awl on his brow, asks the people of Pennsylvania to place him in one of their highest seats of power and of honor! .What shall the answer be in October? BRIDGES OVER TOR MISSISSIPFI.—Mr. J. W. Bisael, civil engineer, communicates to the St. Louis Chamber of Commerce the fact a bridge across the Mississippi at St. Paul has been commenced, which will be only 70 feet above high water mark. Another will soon be let to contractors at Dahuque, and he adds that there are five others in contemplation on that river and two on the Missouri. ,Judge Nelson, of New York, in granting an injunction against the Albany bridge, said: '•lt is apparent that they must so regulate and, control the erection, o n that, however multiplied the exigencies and business necessities of the country may be, the reasonably unobstructed navigation of the rives should still be maintained"—and further— '•a preliminary inquiry in this and like CMOS o.lollld be made by the party complaining, and the work corteniplated promptly enjoined, if there should be any rerionablo g:ounds for believing that the bridge might tined!? he held an obstruction." In view of this decision, the St. Louis (num ber of Commerce will probably take early steps to procure injunctions against all these bridges. Goy. Reancn.—The Chicago Trabune publish ea a letter from this gentleman to Mr. Conway, of 11,,unsas, in which he urges the free State men to adhere firmly to the Topeka Constitution and give no heed to the wiles and tricks of.t heir op ponents. He says "With calm and quiet, but unflinching and deter mined perseverance in the course you have laid out for yourselves, success is as certain as a mathemat ical solution. Before such moral heroism—such patient unquailing persistence, such absorbing devo tion to liberty. and ouch an unending, unchanging. indomitable endurance, all obstacles must oltimatelt ho crushed and pulverised into insignificance. And when you do coerced, what a success will it be !" IN Eanstsr.—The Southern Commercial Con ventionists have at last shown themselves in ear nest. The estimated cost of the steamers for the line between England and the Chesapeake is half a million of dollars. Eight thousand have already been subscribed. To be sure that is not much, but in view of the proceedings of previous con ventions of the Southern Commercial stamp it isa movement gigantic in its practicality. •' Nottszose." The Annsylvanian denies authoritatively and emphatically that •'the course of the Federal Administration is directed to wards the admieeinn of Kansas as a free State,” and adds that it is ••glad to see that its neigh bor, the Tunes, don't believe in any such non sense." POETIC.—Mr. Buchanan is invoked by a Tact of Philadelphia, Mr. Henry B. Hirst, in a poem about Kansas and its difficulties, to -Anal go forth mired to the fight^ Far shame, Henry :M. Buchanan is an ohl mati and it is bar e nonsense to advise any such proceeding. M.S.ISUURI ELECTI,,N.—Otti St. Louis papers retch-" 1 last night contain returns from 15 more oona, tes, ire.eh show an additional gain for Rol lins of 1706, making his gala in 57 counties 6677, which leaves him hut 8000 to overcome in the other 50 counties, It looks, now, as if he I'M elected. COL. WITIIER'h slave, who was sh t in Cincin nati, a few weeks a go, while the slave-catching Marshalls were catching him, is dead—a fate he no doubt preferred to the galling yoke ut slavery! D. S. Deputy Marshall Elliott, who was stabbed by him, has recovered, and is still engaged in the disreputable business of catching negroes and arresting white men. POISONED HAT.—A farmer in Ashtabula, Ohio. complains that he has lately lost seven heed of cattle by their eating poisoned hay. It appears that the poison is in the form of ergot. a smutty ezcresseace which grows on the June grass. it grows as it does on rye, in the shape of a diseas ed and enlarged ...iced of dark color, varying from the size of a wheat grain to three-fourths of an inch long. MCIIDER OF A MOTIIZR BY non CI4II,RTN. The calendar of crime becomes more and more horrible. The Chicago Journal records the murder in that city of Mrs. Deidrich, nearly SO years of age, and the arrest of her eon and daughter for the unnatural crime. Thane is a sad truth in the assertion of the Genoa correspondent of the Newark Adverti,r, that "Italy is morally volcanic: the seething elements are never quiet, but the eruptions usually expend themselves in ro, that occasions no very great a:arm."
