The church of St. Finbar, said to bare been founded In the seventheentury—but trebuilt, containing . only the arch of the old deo way—ts always visited by the tourist. A singular geological arrangement is seen here. On one side of the narrow stream the rock is a red sandstone, and on the other is lime stone; and this order, I am told, in invariable along the stream. Along the hanks. of 'se river it has been donstructed dyke, called the ltlerdyko, which is now the fashionable promenade in the summer evenings. With its trees and shrubs, 46 an inviting Kim. The vicinity of Cork contains /I nu Ober of I places of interest. The hitter, formerly called the Cove, but now dignified by the name oft .Queenstown, well repays the traveller for the time andlabor of a visit. The town is small and has no especial objects of interest. but the view of the harbor is very fine. At the entrance • of the - bay, Spike island stretchg across nearly from point to point no as to protect the harbor from storms, and else making it exceedingly safe against a hostile fleet. The bay is so large that a very large navy can find ample shelter, and it is said the entire navy of Great Britain might ride here in safety. It was into this bay that the Atlantic put back for repairs when such in. tense anxiety was felt for her safety. A little arm of this ay is also pointed out where Drake escaped.th 'pursuit of the Sl:anise fleet. • A numb r of small islands adds to the beauty of the harbor, while the frowning forts, of which there is a number, admonish a fee of the dan ger of an attack. For several miles around I noticed a number of small towers, of round form, called Martell() towers, and which I was informed were built during the lime that a French invasion was feared. Farther down is the place.where in 17% a French fleet was col . ' heeled by the ill-fated Roche, fur the purpose of entering the bay and attacking the city; but a terrible storm, as in the case of Armada, scat tered the vessels and saved the country. These storms, occurring as they did at such critical junctures, seem like a special interposition of Providence to prevent the disasters which must have seemed to the leading Protestant notion of the world. Nor is the scone of beauty confined to the harbor. Along the river, through its whole course of thirteen miles, fine cottages, cultivated grounds, castles and towers, add variety and in terest to the view. Among other objects, a tower to Father Matthew, the apostle of tem perance, stands conspicuous. This was the grand theatre of his life and labors. Here he tailed to reform the masses of.his countrymen ; and though a Catholic, 1 find that he commanded the ystoem and affection of the whole community.— Many who were reformed through his instru mentality have returned to their cups again, bet many still stand firm, as 1 had evidence at many places, to the pledge which they took at hie hands. One of the Sithimbs of Cork, which the strang er must not fail to visit, is the celebrated tower of Blarney, in which is the famous Rltirney stone. Adjacent to this are the groves of Blarney, real ly beautiful, but not so exceedingly so as they are represented in song. Tim tower stands in a finely arranged estate, and at the base of its crumbling walls a-little stream flows over an ar tificial rocky bed. The tower was very large =id strong. and is ascended by a spiral stone stairway. The roof is-broken up over mast of the rooms, and ivy has climbed over the cold, bare walls. But around the top a narrow pathway still remains, over which we carefully stepped to see the famous atone which confers such won drous powers of eloquence. There is some dis pute as to the particular stone. Some say it was a stone of singular shape, which many years since was broken in pieces by a lunatic and car ried away. Others aver that it is a Stone which projects from the wall some ten feet below the summit., and to which the person must be let down; and others point to a broken stone, now secured by iron supports, and which forms port of the lower course of the projecting cornice of the tower. Our party could not kiss it; hot by stooping down we were able to touch it, which was the next best thing we could do. Many a verse ban been written on the virtues of the Blarney stone, and it is celebrated wherever the Irish race has gone; yet the castle was built by the :Wearily' only shoot three hundred years ago. But the castle with all i:s facinating pow er, could not prevent its owner from parting with it by a forced sale, and Prout tbe mua« eborl'e tear =l=lM2=l With ci hammer 10 Iv.
