Director of tAe Poor, J. hIcKINNEY SNODGRAkIg, of Mifflin ENGINES, Sass Srsvon to Taxsa.—Our readers will probably remember that a few weeks since we published a short article taken from an exchange, which set forth that a paper published at Quit man, Wood county, Texas, called the Free l'ren, had dared io venture an opinion that the inter ests of Texas would be greatly promote 4 by sub stituting free for slave labor. The article also stated that the editor of the paper, Mr. Winston Banks, had been elected to a seat in the Demo cratic State Convention, of which party he wes a member. It - appears that the Free Pres. was nut rabid in its advocacy of freedom in Texas, but persisted in publishing the communications of Mr. J. E. Lemon, which advocated the sub stitution of free for slave labor. The publica tion of Mr. Lemon's articles was loudly dis claimed against by the journals and leading ' politicians of the State. but none undertook to put him down by argument, although assured by Mr. Banks that his columns were open for free discussion of till subjects. ' Subsequent events have shown that both Mr. Banks and Mr. Lemon presumed too much upon their un questionable rights as American citizens and citizens of Texas, to discuss the laws and in stitutions of their State. Mr. Banks attended the meeting of the State Convention, presented his credentials and demanded his seat; but was rotated a hearing by the anemia:now Tote of the body, and not even allowed a word in defence of his position in favor of free discussion. But this is not the whole. By means of s conspiracy formed among thenembet• of that Convention, a mob was assembled at Quitman soon after, as 'lair and order citizens of Wood connty,7' com posed of slaveholders for leaders and ameacited rabble from the surrounding cbunties, under the influence of leading politifians from the Convention which had so unceremoniously treat ed Mr. Banks. This meetingof "law and order' men passed a series of resolutions condemning the freedom of speech and deeffiring that the Free seas should no longer be published. Tho resolutions also contained a warning to Messrs. Banks and Lemon to leave within two days, upcn pain of being forcibly ejected. A commit tee was appointed with inetructions to officially notify the objectionable gentleman of the action taken fn,their case, which duty was discharged. Mr. Lemon left immediately, and Mr. Banks as soon as ho could dispose of his office. Both are natives of the south—Mr. Banks of South Caro lina, and Mr. Lemon of Virginia—have always lived and been rearedamid southern Institutions, but possessing innate convictions of right which teach any unbiased mind that it is wrong to eat the bread, of another; and that such a wrong will surely recoil with untold evils upon the perpetrator. BORDER RIIIIII,NB AND Face STAID GIRLS.— It is most amusing to a curious observer, to see how the Border Ruffians of .Westport and Kan sas City court the society of our Lawrence girls. They think that theproper way to settle matters will be to intermarry, but wish it to be all on their sido. The following good story bee lately come to my oars: There lives in Kansas City a very rich old bachelor, who is quite fond of the society of the ladies. Some of our Law rence girls happening to be at Kansas City, ho obtained an introduction to them, and, in the course of the conversation, remarked that the only way to hare permanent peace was for the men of Missouri to go up and marry the Law rence girls. "What!" exclaimed ono of •the young ladies "Border Ruffians marry Freo State girls' Why if a Border Ruffian should come courting me, I should drive him from the house." "Miss," said our hero, rising indignantly, "I myself am a Border Ruffian, and I feel person: ally insulted. I will not stay and endure such talk." • "Sir, I beg your pardon," said the young lady, putting the utmost sarcasm into her tone, "yea are eo old that I did not think of your coming to see me; but should a young Border Ruffian venture, I would broomstick him, air; I repeat it, I would broomstick him !" Tos MCIIIII IN lainte.—A p vats letter from an officer in the British East I dim army to his friends in England, which is published in the 11 London News, presents an a ' ming picture of the condition of affairs In flint °oaten. lie de clares that it is impossible to c nceal any longer the condition of India; thong the government .suppresses every kind of infer ationtit receives :that is likely to create alarm, rid it is evensaid that it pays heavily to the d ly papers to do the same. It is • consequent y difficult to ar rive at the truth, or a knowled eof what is go- 'rig on. • The writer adds, that the disaffection that has so long existed among the sepoye from ono ex tremity of British India to the other, has at length displayed itself in all its meaning. After giving some details of the recent. mutiny, be says that before another mail reaches England, be apprehends it not impossible that. the Euro. .penu -population of India will be considerably diminished. lie alleges that thin is not. exager ation. There seems to be no reason to doubt . the extent of the disaffection, more especially in view of the serious manner in which the Eng lish periodicals speak of it.—Phila. N. Amer. It remained for the supreme wickedness ,of the cheats of New Orleans to forge the name'of the Great Apostle and his Divine Master, in the insane warfare they are waging against Christianity. Tao Moswar AND Tizzcsorz—A Fuble.—Tho monkey of a celebrated astronomer, having seen him continually looking through 'his telescope, concluded that there must be something delight ful in it, and he gazed through it a long time,. but, seeing nothing, he concluded his master was a fool, and the telescope all nonsense ; and he told Rover, the dog,, what he thought of his master. "I don't know the use of the telescope, nor how wise our master may be," said the dog, "hut I am satisfied of two things !" "What are they ?" said the monkey. "First," said the dog, "that telescopes were not made for monkeys to look through; and, secondly, that monkeys were not made to look through telescopes." WALKER'S PROSPECTS.—The St. Louis News says that Gen. Walker can secure five thousand men and a quarter of a million of dollars, be sides cannon, shells, shot, ammunition, and sup plies to any needed amount, within thirty days' notice. The money ($250,000,) is ready and subject to his draft at any moment. Walker does not desire more than one thousand men, as he is satisfied that with that number ho can conquer and keep possession of Nicaragua,•in spite of all the Central American armies that can be brought iu the field against him. Ile is operating quietly at present and keeps his own counsel ; but the departure of another expedi tion from New Orleans. sometime the coming fall, well appointed and with Walker at its head, is an event that may be seriously expected. 121 t 1 P 1 i ill p VOLUME LXX----NUMBER '285: Tun second election in three Districts of Par is which failed to give an absolute majority on the fired trial, took place on the sth and fit.h inst., and passed off quietly. Varin Dartmou 11:..379 St. Latiquetto....ll,o%4 We have letters from Washington county which assure us that the elseewho was shot near Sparta by one Erskine Mansfield, (what a name for a nigger-catcher and murderer to wear!) did not, by his death, escape the .personal violence of his enemies. The ruffian who alleges that he pursued the three fugitives from Missouri, dug up the corpse of the murdered man after he was buried, cut off his head with an axe, and bore it back toward the region of harbarista ns a trophy of his prowess! The Black Democracy of the vicinity applaud the net by offering n re ward Tor the heads of all "traitors and Aboli tionista!!"—Chicago Trib. SOUTHERN WHEAT CEOP.—WO learn from a circular issued in Charleston, S. C., some inter esting facts relative to the Southern wheat crop. and to Charleston as a market for it. From ex tensive observations in Georgia and Tennessee, it is confidently stated that It is much the ler gest ever grown in those States—tho estimate being three and a half millions of bushels, be sides one million, the produce of North and South Carolina. It is alsoeslimated that Charles 3 ton will receive all of the latter, and the greater portion of the former—probably 250,000 barrels of flour, and 1,500,000 bushels of wheat. Tus Bnos Team—Two extensive trade sales of boots and shoes have been held in this city during the past two days, at whioh Mae eight thousand cases of various styles of boots, shoes and brogans have been disposed of. The mag nitude of these sales—exceeding anything here tofore attempted in this country—and the in formation in regard to them which had been diffused throughout the country, drew very large assemblages of purchasers. Prices ruled somewhat in advance of previous quotations.— Boston Journal. BucuAsss ~,at, Wensrsn.—Soon after the great expounder had discharged one of His heavy guns in the United States Senate, a' gentleman was extolling him to Buchanan. "Yes," said the latter, "ho is a great statesman, but no poli tician. The 'same individual met Mr. Webster a few days subsequently, and improvedethe oc casions to elicit his opinion of the philosopher of Wheatland, and singularly enough, he said of Buchanan, "He Is a great politician, but no statesman."-Bosion Transcript. COLONEL KINNEY AEONO THE "DARKENS" or rnr. BAT lALANDS.—A letter-in the New Orleans Picayune, dated Belize, Honduras, June 110 says: "Colonel Kinney, from Greytown, is at Rini tan; lie is said to be a very nice, quiet and peaceable man. The darkies there say they like him very much, and I should not be at all surprised to see him a magistrate, a governor or even the first president of the republic of the Bay Islands. MARCY'S LITTER TO BOTTS.—That last letter of Mr. Marcy addressed to Hon. John M. Botta, of Richmond , was to introduce the latter as his flienkto Hon. Thos. H. Seymour, United States minister at St. Petersbargh, Russia. Mr. Bolts expects to spend siveral of the ensuing months in a tour through Europe, and will visit most of its celebrated resorte before ho will return. Tull Cooperstown Journal tells ofe man whose sister informed him he had not long to live, and suggested that he might not feel entirely 'prepar ed for that event.
