TIIIIOwN Awsy. —The sectional favoritism evinced by the Administration in selecting the Southern route as that over which the grea California mail is to be carried, will probably result in the entire loss of the appropriation of $600,000, made' by, the last Congress for that purpose. Setting aside the facts that the public will be greatly inconvenienced by making Little Rock, in Ar kansas, the point of departure—that the North ern States contribute $4,98A,588 to the postal revenue, while the Scruthern States contributes only sl,ri.lti.2B2—that the North sends more than ninety-eight millions of letters a year, w bile the South sends but thirty-two millions-11mi those who pay for mail service should be enti tled to a hearing in its regulation,—setting aside these facts, it is surer, that, in their zeal to serve the South, a route has been selected by our accommodating officals over which the mail cannot be carried at all! The liberal appro priations made by Northern votes, to accommo date the business wants of the country will be ,op.an.lered in attempts to carry favor with the utgger-drirers.—('Maya Trib. Deyt II or Ft nll TII I: QUESTIoN ' SEITLZIL During the drouth of last year great numbers of fish died in the Little Miami river, especially below the great distilleries below Deerfield and i Morrow. It was said they were killed by the poison from the distilleries This was denied, and the fact attributed to t to unusual drouth.— The following paragraph f omtliZ,/,/ t onon Star, however, seems to settle the question: - Diming the recent freshets In Dry list.. at Deerfield, the poisonous matter from the distill ery north of the village, was washed into the Miami river, and caused the death of ten of thousands of Ash. Two tons, it is calculated, were thus destroyed. The mill-race of Mr. Isaac Strublis, a mile below, wasliterallyclmk ed up with dead fish. Is there no remedy for this wholesale slaughter of the finny tribes 7" Why should we stop the slaughter . of fish till u e have stopped the slaughter of men?. The Sr., also states the death of lour men in the north part of Warren county, attributed to drinking whisky with strychnine in U.—Clads sMto Garatt. Tun Comm Coop.—A Washington corres pondent of the Baltimore Run, says "Apprehensions generally prevailing a month or two ago as to the crops of grain, the., have disappeared; and the Cotton crop, concerning which there was such an alarm, is likely to he, is the aggregate, the largest ever made in the country, and will entirely dissipate the appre phensione of the Manchester spinners as to the Culture of the supply. It is said to he ascertain ed that the quantity of land planted this year in c.ittnn is twenty per cent. greater than last year when the crop was above two million hales Should the crop this year reach the same aver age, which it - probably will, we shall have the largest cropever made—that i 5,3,500,000 bales." A letter from Alabama, in alltimion to the same qiibject, speaks of the crop thin year as likely to reach to 3,500,000 of bales. THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY GASE.—The Court this morning gave their final decision in the case of Cho contested election for District Attorney, declaring that Mr. Manu was elected. This de cision must lead to curious results. Mr. Cassi dy has hitherto held the office by virtue of his certificate of election, which is now annulled.— Mr. Mann, who is cow declared to base been legally elected, is also District illtornoy by ap pointment of the Court, under the new law pas sed last winter. Mr. Cassiday is, therefore, out of office, unless the Court should appoint him as they lately appointed Mr. Mann.—Phila. Brdle- BRITISH POWER IN Num—Lord Ellenboro', who has so large an acquaintance with Indian affairs, recently said in - Parliament: "We know not the danger to which such a state of things may give rise. In short; toy lords, wo are really—and I trnst her Majesty's ministers are alive to the full extent of the dan ger—we are really in a position in which it be comes necessary for un to use every effort which the country can make to maintain—perhaps it may be 'to recover—that great empire which we have acquired in the East." COUNTZRENIT ON TUE N. W. BASIC or VINGINI.C. —Yesterday a most ruinously aecurate counter fen upon the ten dollar notes of the North Wes tern Bank of Va., payable at the Wellsburg Branch made its appearance in this city. • Two of them were taken on deposit at the Merchants and Mechanics' Bank, and one of them at the North Western. They . are unususally perfect in their execution and would deceive almost any one, as may bo readily inferredfrom their being taken at the above named banks.— Wheeling iu telligencer. Neither mitred nor crowned heads lore to see the forms of their successors darken ing the sick chamber; and the shadow which the stalwart presence of Bishop Hughes cast upon the bed-side of the old French prelate seemed like the first admonition of that Valley of Death, into which, in spite of his assurances that he was better, he was fast hastening, and soon sank. Twenty years have passed, and the same shad ow falls athwart the path of his successor—not upon his detith-bed, but prematurely upon his unconscious daily walk. How well, or how ill, the Roman Catholic Prelate bas administered his great trust, it is not for us to say. He has not escaped accusation. For yeprs he has note only set aside all rivalry, and repressed all re-' cusancy, but substantially nullified the position of every ecclesiastic whose talents or influence could he brought into comparrison with bisirwn. To one of urbane manners and social tastes be would give the charge of a rude and unformed congregation. To another, a bankrupt church; to another, an insubordinate congregation. Oa the other hand, he lifted up the lowly, the ignor ant, and the uncouth, and be soon gathered about him a body guard of ecclesiastics of whom he was forilr princeps; and in the Diocese of New York, more liberally perhaps than anywhere else in the Roman Church, was the Divine word realized, Beal aunt pauperea Hut is this the accusation upon which it is said the Pope is now called upon to terminate the Episcopal functions of John Hughes? By no means! Rome would not heed such a charge; nor would it give ear to the representations which it is said, have been made long since to the Holy See, that the Catholic castle in America has suf fered alike from the inordinate pretensions and the inexplicable inefficiency of His Grace. In a city through which three millions of Catholics ' hare entered, Siflet, he has bad charge of the Diocese of New York—in a city winch numbers more professors of the faith than Rome itself— his accusers say that there is not a monument of Catholic power or influence, not an institution perfected; and that he alone has seemed uncon scious of themovement of that living host, whose presence and influence have invited the attention and alarmed the jealousy of the Protestant peo ple of these States. Everywhere else they say the Church is an organization, with a policy, with a great frantework of institutions, to be filled up as time shall afford the means. Here it is *id by members of the Church, it is.a chaos without form and void. Not even an architect ural strncture worthy of a powerful anti wealthy community—not a well-organized charity—not an institution of learning that commands re spect, and that eon point to His Grace as its founder and sustainer. His, they say, has been the ambition and the politics of our Aldermen, and not the statesmanship of a prelate of the Church. And yet even these nccusations have passed unheeded by Rome. The mere serious inculpa tion for which Clergy of the Archdiocese, now present in the Eternal City, invoke the thunders of the Vatican. is that the Primate of New York has omitted to notice the declaration of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception ; and that. he turned his back and fled to Cuba when the Nuncio of Pius assailed by the press, hoot ed and atoned by the mob, and burned in effigy in n hundred cities and villages, most needed his support. These areserious offences at. Rome. Maladministration, nepotism. indolence, arro gance, a meddling and petty spirit, are nothing compared with offences which imply indiffer ence to the Virgin Mary and disrespect to the representative of the Vicar of Christ on earth. It is difficult for the American mind to realise this indifference on one side, this sensitiveness on the other; hut the fact. we believe, is not less true,,and our readers need not he surprised if they hear that the Pope and his Holy College of Cardinals have designated a coadjutor to the Archbishop, with the right of succession, or with still more painful severity have designated Administrators of the Diocese, into whose hands its otfairs shall pass. ihus virtually deposing the present incumbent. • • But the harshness of the measure will, doubt less. he concealed under the honied phrases and deferential forms in which churchmen disguise every movement of what among worldings, Would be called ambition and rivalry. The or gan of the Archbishop will announce that His Grace has petitioned to His Holiness to be re lieved of the cares which press too heavily upon him : that he desires to devote the remainder of his life to seclusion, and the devotional exercises which befit his calling and age. The Bishops who are to take possession of the Diocese, and whom his charity and humility will forbid him to hate, will how before him, will burn incense before him, will kiss his signet ring, and uphold his train as lie ascends the altar to celebrate ! the mysteries of his religion. Already conjectures are whispered as to the successorship, and the priests of Maynootir, and the. Celtic clergy generally, speak of Archbishop O'Connor, of Pittsburgh, while the ecclesiastics of American birth look to Bishop 'McCloskey, of Albany, formerly coadjutor of New York. to whom, indeed, the suffrages of his colleagues of the Church would be gladly awarded, had he not refused, or at least omitted, to he an accuser of the Archbishop, when the necessities of the Church calletl • for his intervention.—.K. nom DATA or Guam—Since tha passage of the law abolishing days of grace in New York State, nn impression prevails that all paper maturing on Sunday is legally payable on the day pre vious. The true rule is that where the day of grace falls on Sunday, the paper is payable on Saturday: but where the note falls due without grace on Sunday, it is payable on Monday. flet,Es M'FAILLAND, 17 years old, was bathing with three littl, girls, in Spurwink river:al, Cape Elisabeth. Maine, and, saying she would show them how she swim upon her back, threw herself iut n that pos:t ion, sunk immediately, and was di - owned, although the water was but two and a half feet deep. Etti.sii at s Lydia Woodward, aged 77. while picking strawberries in a pasture io Waterbury, Vt.. rem: otly, was attacked by a ram; her skid: and ribs were broken, her breast was beaten in, she was found insensible, and died soon afterward. -The savage brute was killed immediately. Dn. CRONVN has been unanimously elected Bishop of Canada West. Although this is the first.instanA of tho election of a Bishop in any of the British Provinces, the choice has yet to receive the sanction of the Queen. Dr. Cronyn is claimed as n Low Churchman.
