I BIITALINCI 1 KENTGCM—On Wednes day, last a meeting was held at the Court Rouse at Newport Ky., to nominate Republican candi dates for Congress and the State Senate. We find an account of the proceedings to the Cin-. cinnati Cement. Mr. C. G. Payne presided; W. SB. Stewart, Secretary. Messrs. Rice, San ford and Williams, were appointed to draft res olutions, who reported the following; which were adopted. Resoled. That the prosperity and glorious future of Kentucky is dear to our hearts, and that the .developments of its immense agricultural ankmineral resources should bean object of our3lighest regard. Resolved, That it is to the paramount interest of Kentucky, if she would keep pace with the growthwnd onward career of her sister States of the West., to foster and encourage free white labor, and that all her white citizens should be free men, free to think, free to speak, and free to tote Resolved, That while one drop of American,or Anglo Saxon, blood shall continue to course our veins, we will cling to those principles of free dom characteristic of our race; that we will bow in abject submission to no man, while we unfurl ourbanner to the breeze with the words of the immortal Patrick Henry inscribed thereon, "Give me Liberty-or give me death." Resolved, That we hail with open hearts and open arms that surging tide of emigration that is setting in upon us from the old world, and composed of those who' seek for that freedom and human happiness here that is denied every where else . Ras°Ned, That the existence of Slavery in Kentucky is deeply - to he regretted, and that however much difference of opiriiori may exist in regard to the propriety of abolishing it now, still, were we free from it, we would unanimous ly oppose its introduction here; and while enter taining these principles, if applicable to home. Rewired, That we heartily adopt the princi ples ef the great AmeriCan Republican party, namely: "non interference (on the part of Con gress or the free States) in regard to slavery in the sovereign States where it now exists, and non-extension of slavery over territory, now free." Rescued, That we hold with Chief Justice Marshall, that sovereignty is inherent in the people, and notin property. Mr. C. G. Payne was nominated for the State Senate, and 13. P. Sanford was nominated for Congress: We publish, to-day, a higllly interesting his tory of a slave's straggle for freedom. The sub ject of this history, whose original name was Teller, was taken from Africa by a Spanish slaver, when only 12 years old. The slaver was captured by a British-brig-of-war, when Tallen was sent on board the British brig Peacock, to serve as a cabin-boy during the war of 1818.— When the Peacock was sunk by the American schooner Hornet,in 1818,Tallen was sent, a pris oner of war, to Savannah, Ga., where a party got control of hits, forwarded a report to Wash !Mon that ho was dead, and sold him into slav ery... After upwards of forty years' servitude, during which time be purchased his freedom thrice, he at lest has escaped from bondage, and now, claiming to be a British subject, seeks in demnity at the hands of those who have so long and so unjustly held him in servitude. MIL JAMES THOMPSON, one of the locofoco Can didates of the Supreme Bench, was a member of Congress in 1847, and voted for' the Witmer Pacmso all through. He was so ultra, that he voted against extending the Missouri Compro mise line to the Pacific, .beeauw that measure would give Slayery additional territory. When a candidate for re-election in 1848, he published a letter, claiming that he was' the real author of the WILMOT Paortso, and that his honors had been unfairly filched from him. When the democratic party of this State went over to Slavery, he was one of the foremost inthe trea son to Freedom, and has ever since been violent and unrelenting in his opposition to every public man who would not exhibit a baseness equal to his own. Tue Fillibustere who arrived here sick and wounded, and who were taken to Bellevue and the City Hospitals, are still there, with the ex ception of four or five that have recovered, and ono that died a few days ago. With the excep tion of one who is ill with the dropsy, and an other that IS suffering from a severe knife-wound id the breast, no danger is apprehended. They have all improved very much since they were admitted, and with, the exception of the cases named, no doubts are entertained of their recor erY. Of those who were not sent to the Ilospi tab', but few remain in the city. Those who had homes to write to, have written, and received the means of returning once more to their families. The rest are doing as well as may be.—N. Anti. Kunz Couirrr DEBT.—The Viicennes (Ind.) Sun says, that on Friday; the. 10th instant, a movement will be made to levy on the court house, jail, court house square, and other public property of 'the county, at the snit of the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad 'Company, for the in forest dge•ons2oo,oooof the county bonds, for which judgment was obtilied at the last tr. 8. Circuit Coact: • - The coati house' and jail are tb be sold; the court hones .grounds will be held from sale till the action of thecounty authorities are known. The Sun thinks a public meeting ought to' be called, 'to conadatrate "action on this vital question." To pay the debt, will double the present 'taxes, which . i "people won't stand." .13ENATOS ACCOUNT ON ilrosatv.— Vire are furnished the following extract from a letter Ilrom Senator Sumner, dated at Perin - . "I should have acknowledged your letter at an' arlier date, :but I have not been well, and have had not heart .to_write. The Thames was crowded with steamers and sailing vessels of every description, amid 'which - our vessel steered its way: But 'scarcely had we gone four miles when one of the condensing , cylinders cracked with a noise resembling the sound of a cannon. There was some conster nation on board until the nature of the accident was known. The ship immediately stopped, a boat was sent to the shore, and the owners in London were telegraphed - to send another ship. The afternoon passed rather heavilyaway, and yet there were objects of interest all around us. We were directly abreast of an immense ,estab lishment for furnishing provisions for the Brit ish navy: Below us was the large marine hos pital at Greenwich. On the hill beyond, amidst surrounding trees, stood the observatory of. Greenwich. There the Royal astronomers have long made their calculations—there a Herschel labored, amdfrom that point the navies of the World reckon their longitude. Almost directly opposite was the new mammoth steamer, the "Great Eastern, - not yet launched. Compared with it, all our ocean steamers sink into insig nificance. It is 680 feet, or about the eighth of a mile long, 80 feet in width, and GO feet from . the keel to the deck. Made of Iron, it is divided into several distinct water-tight Compartments, so that if any on? compartment should be injured the ship would not be seriously affected. For propelling power it will have ten boilers, with one hundred furnaces, driving two paddle wheels sixty feet in diameter: It will also be furnished, with a shrew propeller twenty-four feet in distra cter, and with seven masts. Its projector is confident that, owing to its depth in the water, it will - be unaffected by the motion of the waves. So deep, indeed, will be its draught, that It can not enter the harbor of New York. It will pro hasty visit Portland, and then engage in the Australian trade. The Sea captains generally predict that it will be a failure, as it will re ' quire to much time to load and unload its cargo. This will soon be ascertained, as it will he Sn ished in August or September: About seven o'clock we were on hoard the Dolphin, and were passing rapidly down the . Thames. The northern or northeastern shore is low, and the country Constituting the county of Essex is generally level and low near the river. The other shore, the county of Sussex, has many beautifully eminences, rising now abruptly from the river, and then with interven ing plains finely cultivated. These eminences are crowned with tasteful edifices, and HI some instances will, the castles of the nobility. At different points along the river there were posts regularly numbered, and on inquiry I learned that they were part of a police regula-, tion respecting coal boats. To prevent too great a supply, only a certain number of boats are permitted to pass each day through these several divisions. Hence, sometimes a large fleet of such boats will be found lying in the lower part of the Thames. Such restrictions on trade would not be well received in America, but in Europe all matters of general-interest, whether in trade or otherwise, are strictly regulated' by law. As we approached Gravesend one of our own beautiful ships, the Niagara, was lying at anch or in the midst of the river; but as it was after sunset, the flag was not displayed. This noble steamer has attracted no little attention, and as we passed it our sailors were comparing its fig ure and arrangements with those of British ♦esseLs, and they were disposed to award it a high degree of excellence. Its mission was ono of science and fraternal love: for it comes to aid' in laying the cable of the great submarine tel egraph. that the two nations, bending their lips an ears to the Atlantic, might send their cor dial greeting to each other with every rising sun. Passing Gravesend, we were soon out in the British Channel. The sea here is usually very rough, but the night was clear, scarcely a breath of air was stirring, tend the sea was almost its smooth as a minor. I watched for some time the lights upon the coast as they faded away, and then retired to rest. .lust here lam re minded of the geeat inferiority of the small Eng lish steamers, as to accommodations, when com pared with the American. On our first steamer we found that two sets of tickets lens been issued for the same rooms. The only way of settling the contested claims was to - ascertian whose tick ets had been issued first, and to give rooms ac cordingly. To this ties passengers, with a few exceptions, yielded very pleasantly. Even the Duchess of St. Albans, a lady of high rank, who with her daughter was en route for the continent, and who according to her position in society, might have claimed precedence, gracefully yield ed her claim for a room quite inferior. lilted: we were-transferred to the second steamer, the best rooms were seized by those first on board, without any regard to the tickets. And when two gentlemen were appealed to, to elicits two ladies, who were in feeble health, to occupy the room similar to the one they had occupied on the other ve.s.sel, one of them, who was a French man, consented; but the other, a stout, portly Englishman, absolutely refused, and threatened to sue the company if he were displaced. In spite of all entreaty he maintained his position, and the sick ladies were coiapelled to take very inferior lodgings, and a number who had first tickets slept on the Soar. Ilotasso—Early in the morning the lOW coast of Holland was seen upon our right, as we ap proached the western mouth of the Scheldt.— As we entered the river, upon our left was the island of Walcharen, the largest of the nine is lands which constitutes the province of Zealand. This island, as well as the adjacent islands and the main land, lies a number of feet below the level of the sea, and is preserved from -being overflown partly by sand hills or dunes existing on the coast, and partly by large dykes or levees, constructed at an enormous expense, and cost ing, it is said, some eight hundred thousand dollars per annum to keep them in repair. On one part of the dyke on this island—the great dyke at' West Kappel—it is said that it Would' have cost less hail it been originally made of solid copper. Yet in 1808 a rupture occurred in it by which a large part Of the island was inns dated, and in some places the sea tosses high as ' the tops of the houses. Owing to the height of the banks, we could see very little of the coon- I try; but such portions of It as were visible were highly cultivated and exceedingly fertile. - The Hollander has a right to feel attached to his country. It is emphatically his own. Far' it be has battled with the proud waves of the sea, and his untiring industry.and patient per hate won him a splendid triumph.— Yet with all its fertility and its fine position for commerce, who would wish to lire in a land se llable to be swept by thearigry ocean° Our vessel touched afew moments at Flushing and received some officers on board. Flashing is a town of some seven thousand inhabitants,-, defended by a fort commanding the.Scheldt, and is penetrated by deep canals, admitting the largest tperchunt vessels into the town. in the memorable cipetlition. of 1809, in which the: British designed, with some hundred and, forty vessels washout one hundred thousand men, to ascend the Scheldt and to destroY.the fortifica tions at Antwerp, this town was bombarded anti a great portion of it destroyed. : . About. three hundred of the inhabitants . perishek -but th. British fleet failed in its, principal undertaking. Directly opposite to it is*Cadsand, some three, miles distant, which also suffered in the war of 1809. The English boast of. a' great victory gained at this point over the - Flemingsin9B3i. As we ascended the river, here and there' beyond the high banks were visible line spots of land, with low buildings r while not unfrequent ly church spires were Seen gleaming in the this,, Mace. Large ferry-boats, of beautiful model: and remarkably' swift, were running to and 09 across the broad river. The banki. seimed almost alive with windmills, which here do not only the grinditig, but pump water into the canals to dram the low lands. .. - - But here is fort Bata, on, the limit9of the Dutch territory, and now we passinto Belgium.
