Of these, 100,000 might obviously have voted had they chosen to do so ; and, as the Government officially proclaimed that it would regard abstention as unfriendly, and the power of influence, patronage and po lice surveillance is immense in the capital—the functionaries and soldiers being there innumer able—it cannot be seriously doubted that this vote shows Paris to be radically hostile to the Imperial regime. FRCOALITT Anoso Tux Dleattoss.—ln the foundery of Gaty, McCune & Co., at St. Louis, among its two hundred and seventy operatives are two negroes, who began life at the establish ment in 1849 as slaves. By dint of unflagging industry in due course of time one of them bought himself, wife and five children, paying for himself $l4OO, and on an average for wife and children $BOO each. This negro is now supposed to be worthin his own right more than $6,000 in reai estate in that city. Another negro entering the factory about the same time, amassed suffioient money by his attention to duty to purchase himself at the-price of $1,600, hie wife at $6OO, midterm children ats4oo each, and is now worth $O,OOO in real estate. These negroes were bought from their masters by Mr. Gray, with the understanding that they should work themselves free, and out of his own pock ets he gave two per'eent interest on the deferred payments. The children of both are now re ceiving an excellent education at the public schools of St. Louis. ARRIVAL 07 'RUNAWAY MOLIIONS AT OMAHA, N. T.—We learn from one of the officers of a steamer which arrived yesterday from the up , per Missouri, that on reaching Omaha City, ho was Informed by some of .the eitizens, that. a party of sixty merman! had arrived on the 2d .Snot. The party encamped in the town, and stated that.- they intended to start down the river by some boat in a few days. They were loud in their denunciations of the ruling men of Utah, and aver their firm .belief that a large number of the inhabitantfof the valley, as seen ins they see a chance of protection, by thearriv t6f the U. S. troops, will gladly avail themselves er the opportunity of withdrawing themselves 'from the yoke they are now groaning under. These persons who have reached Omaha, were a portion of the dissatisfied citizens of Salt Lake city, and their escape (that is the word they use) was the result of a well devised and cautions stratagem. They left Salt Lake about April 20th.—St. Louis Dun. BEAUTIIIIL MFTAPUOIC—IieIIry Ward Beech er, in one of his "star" papers in the New York Independent, says: . . ..We have known men, upon whose grounds waved magnificent trees of centuries growth, lifted up into the air with vast breadth, and bill of twilight and midday,—who cut down all these mighty monercha'and cleared the ground bare; and then when the desolation was complete, and the fierce.snmmer gazed full into their face with its fits, they bethought themselves of shade, and forthwithoset out a generation of thin, • shadow less sticks, !witting and waiting until they should stretch out their boughs with - protection, and darken the ground with grateful shadow. All thetrivellers who chanced to call at the neighboring inn of Turriff 'were uniformly directed by the landlady, Mrs. Wallace, to the cottage of the patriarch. -where they wad see," she used to say, "the aublest man Baunffshire —ay, in a' the world." Among the visitors, , one day, about the close of harvest, was a young Englishman, who coming up to the door of the cottage, acosted a venerable looking man, cm- ! ployed in knitting hose, with, "So my old friend, can you see to knit at your advanced period of life? one hundred and thirty-two is truly n rare age." "Veil's? in the man! it'll be my grandfather , ye're seeking-I'm only seventy-three; yell find him round the corner o' the house." On turning round the corner the stranger encountered a de bilitated old man, whose whitened locks bore tes timony to his having long passed* the meridian of life, and whom the stranger at once concluded to be Gordon himself , "You seem wonderfully fresh my good sir, for so -old . a man. I doubt not you have experienced many vicissitudes in the course of your very long life." What's your wull, sir!" inquired the person addressed, whose sense of hearing was somewhat impaired. The observation was repeated. "0, y'll be wanting my father, I reckon; he's i' the yard, there.' The stranger now entered-the garden, where he at last found the venerable old man busily dig ging. potatoes anti humming the "Battle of Har low. ' "I have had some difficulty in finding you, friend, as I successively encountered your grandson and son, both of whom I mistook for yeu ; indeed, they seem as old as yourself. Your labor is rather hard for one of your advac ed age." "It is," replied John, "but lam thank fu' that I am able for't, as the 'eddies, pour things, are not very stout now."—Glasgow Rail way Journal. PECULATION ON THE PUBLIC WORCS.—Since it became probable the works would be seld, the rats have been very busy carrying off public property. Tons and tons -of old iron have been gathered up and sold; the proceeds, it is thought, will never reach the State Treasury. The grab game has been played out boldly, and every tit has been milked dry. The toll col lectors have long faces. All the office holders, State agents, key drivers and rairfoad loafers are in mourning because the publics works will "have no more work for poor old Ned!" The wood piles have vanished in a night. The rogues now begin to tell tales on each other.— The people now begin to find sot how the State has been cheated. Here is a story that was told the other day, as a specimen trick, of the manner In which . a person got pay three times over for wood. When the wood is cut and put in rank, the wood inspector of the State is sent for. He mea sures it and certifies one hundred cords measur ed and sold to the State, at four dollars a cord. The wood is then hauled to Downingtown, corded up, and the wood inspector measures it again, and gives another certificate. The wood is there loaded up on the State cars, and shipped down to Went Philadelphia, audcorded up.' The State inspector is sent for and he measures it again. and gives a third certificate, each time as though it was not the same Wood. Upon each certificate_, pay for the name wood is obtained from the treasury. By this cute contrivance one hundred cords of wood arc paid for three times over.—Cheiter Democrat. HOW a Str:A-STILOICE Arne", NiAN.—The gen eral impression is that death by sun stroke ht very painful, but the contrary would seem In be the fact, judging from the following account of the effect of such a visitation, given by lieu. Sir Charles J. Napier. lie experienced an attack while in Scinde, where the thermometeg; accord ing. to Gen. Were It not for others, would that my horn had then sounded: en easy, an delight ful, I may any was the approach of death. This resembles the accounts that have been given by men who hare been saved from freezing to death, after having got far down into the dark valley: so that the excess of heat and excess of cold produce precisely the same effects. BRITISH b nta.—The Bombay Times estimates the quantity of bullion imported this year. and retained in British India. at fifty to sixty mil lions of dollars. The average of the last seven years shows an annual import and retention of 527,500,000. India has increased thus much in wealth, in the precious metals alone, during this time, making no account whatever or _her increased wealth in landed and personal prop erty, and in public and private works of im provement throughout' the vast extent of her territories. The immense demand for East Indian produce now permanently established, the resources of Scinde and the l'unjaub, just beginning to be rapidly developed, and the growth anti prosper ity of the cotton trade, fully account 'for this. We make, says the Bombay paper, no mention of the introduction of railways; for, although in the process of their construction they are en, riching masses of the laboring poor, their day of triumph is yet to come, and a glorious one it will assuredly be for India. Ost feature worthy of notice in the riot of Saturday is the fact—on which allreporta agree —of the number of boys engaged in the distur bance. A large proportion of the killed and wounded were lads under eixteen. It is notori ous that the crimes against property in the city —the burglaries, and thefts, and robberies—are mostly committed by boys and quite young men. We observed yesterday in the processions of the rowdy societies following some of the killed to the grave, that a great proportion of the mour ners were mere lads, though with most villain ous and old countenance. , It is certainly the word sign for a communi y when its crime is chiefly among the young Y. Y. Tib. Is Natchez, Miss., recently, the Probate Court gave Mrs. Moore the guardianship of the children of her sister, Mrs. 11. H. Hamilton.— She determined to send themlo aCathohlcschool in St. Louis. Mrs. liamilon objected. and went on the boat at the wharf to take her children from it. Mr. Peter Grant interfered, to pre, vent her, when she drew aborticknife and stab bed him in the side. In the excitement produ ced, she got the childon, who were unwilling to leave her, and placed them in a friend's house. All the parties were of high social position. . As other journals have already mentioned the faielXie, not improper for us to state that Mr. Bayard laylois about to bo • married to Miss Marie Ilkusen, a daughter of the eminent Ger man astronomer of that name. The wedding will take place at Gotha, the residence of the bride's family. in:the Autumn, after Mr. Taylor's return from the North Cape. Tbo happy couple will spend the next winter at Moscow.
