[elcoco DISPATCH.] MONTREAL, ute 27.—The steamer Montreal, the account of the loss of which has already been telegraphed from Quebec, contained 600 passengers, and only 176 are known to have been saved—about 200 of the passengers have been drownded. It is believed, however, that swam ashore, and were saved in other ways. The accident happened near Cape Rouge, be tween Montreal and Quebec. • [TO= DIBPATCII.] Qrrame, June 27.—The steamer Montreal left at 4 o'clock,-yesterday afternoon for Montreal, with 4 or 600 passengers, moistly Scotch immi grants, recently from Europe. Nothing unusu al occurred until the Montreal reached Cape Rouge, 12 or 13 miles above Quebec. when the woodwork near the furnaces ware discovered to be on fire. Quickly after the flames broke forth causing the utmost consternation amongst the passengers. Every effurt wee made to arrest the flames, but to no purpose. Capt. Rudolph finding it impossible to save the steamer, order ed her to be run toward the shore. The officers and crew exerted themselves at the came time, to get out the life-boata. Theflamee spread with moat astonishing rapidity, and the wildest con fusion and dispairprevailed throughout the ship. Numbers of passengers threw themselves over board and were drowned. Fortunately the steamer Napoleon, also for Montreal, was but a few miles advanced, taking a boat and put back with all possible expedition to her assistance, the Napoleon succeeded in rescuing from the burn wreck 127 passengers, Capt. Rudolph and the purser of the Montreal, were amongst those who threw themselves into the river; both were ex-, cellent swimmers, and succeeded in reaching the steamer Alliance and were saved. It is quite possible that others succeeded in saving them selves by swimming, but as the steamer became unmanageable -when a considerable distance from land, there is no doubt that most of those who threw themselves from the burning boat met with a watery grave. Sixteen of those who were saved, died shortly after reaching the deck of the Napoleon. ' From present information it is believed that the total loss of life by this terri ble disaster will not fall short of 300 or 400. The steamer Alliancearrived here this afternoon with 46 dead bodies- We have not been able to learn the names of any of those lost, except Mrr Phillips. The extensive lumber firm of Nor cross & Phillips of Three Rivers. Montreal, had onboard 268 Scotch emigrants, several German families, and several American passengers.
