DEMOCRACY. —The State Conve ntion of the Democrats in Georgia has been char acterised by unusual bitternese among the dele gates. The only point on which the Convention seemed to be harmonimte was in condemnation of the course of Dos. Robert. J. Walker in Kan sas. They passed a resolution scolding him for presumptuous interference in matters over which he had no legitimate control," and espe cially far uttering 311 opinion that Kansas would 1 hen free state. This is very unkind, indeed.— Dor. Walker wont to Kansan prepared to do everything to conciliate the South, and to exert himself to have the territory made a slave state. On arriving there ho found that, owing to the great prepunderance of free state mon, he could do nothing of the kind, and he therefore yielded to the force of circumstances as graceftilly w' possible. There can he no &nibs that he aban don.' the pro-slavery ground from shear neees city. and with great reluctance. The South ought to remember this and treat Lim with in dulgence. They ought to see, In the present prospect of freedom in Kansas, the natural re sult of the imposing Attitude of the Republican parte in the last Presidential counpaign. But for the great vote east for Fremont and Dayton, the South might have had its own tray, and eta very might hale boon established in Ran.tas.— The election demonstrated the potter and deter mination of the North, and Georgia ought to recognise the majesty of public opinion, and not grumble and scold at an unavoidable tresult.— Pkiladelphic Bullehn. Nial. Dow to EPOWID.—Mr. Doer's reception in Manchester,. London and other cities has been of the meet enthusiastic character. He is miller the especial care of the "United Kingdom Alli ance," which is a strictly political organization, the object of which is to secure the enactment of n prohibitive law. It embraces some of the strongest and shleet mon of the United King dom. Its head-rinartcre are in Manchester. A man may belong to it without being a teetotaller. On the 2 7th ult., a groat teeming was held at Exeter Hell, at which Mr. Dow spoke, and it is stated that the platform, on this occasion, pre sented a more remarkable display of personal ability nod social influence than has been seen at any previous temperance meeting. A num ber of learned gentlemen of standing and rank spoke at the meeting, thus giving in their coun tenance and influence. The prohibitive move ment is evidently gaining ground in England and Scotland. Mr. Gough leaves on the 15th of July for Eng land, where he has engaged to speak for three years. Though-his lecturc.s aro mainly directed against the use of stimulating drinks, yet 'he is and always hag been a firm supporter of the pro hibitive movement, and a warm personal friend to Mr. Dow. They will.both labor tdgether har utotdously, rand will accomplish great good for the rause.— Trareller. 'Flentso er Imatuturn.—A submarine cable is being constructed in London, which is to be laid along the Norwegian coast some fifty miles for the purpose of informing the fishermen of the various villages when the herring's have come into the fiords and bays to'.apawn. It seems that.their movements are so quick that the fishermen are no sooner on the gronnd.when the arrival is announced them than they are off. The instant the shoal is seen in the . offing.--and it can always be known at a distance by the whales that surround it—a ' message wilt now he flashed along the coast telling each village the fiord or bay which they have ,entered. Alas, filer herring, they thought to circumvent the Norwegians by their quick movereente; but lightning, which is a "leetle bit" quicker, stops and says no. Who would have, thOught,. ten years ago, that lightning would be used to noti fy. fishermen when they might have something more than a •glorious nibble." RatXm.—ln the interior of this State, the recent rains Lave been remarkable both in their quantity and effects. From the first of May to the twenty-eecond of June, (about seven weeke,) s little more than half as much rain fell an in a whole year previously.— Fram February 1, 1866;ti fi'sbruary 1, • 1867, twenty-five inches of rain fell, and in the seven weeka we hive named, twelve and half d amend ed: The rain of May was six inches and maven tenth., which was more than bad fallen before from January let, and June to the date we 'mentioned, it wee not quite five inches and nine tenths, which - 41e st s still greater rate. Thel sap clitiroyailee 3....her:1===c°40.4 GAZET WESTEEN EXIGRATION.—Accounts from all the Eastern States repreactit that there has been during the lost spring at unusual emigration to the Western States. So marked was thiain New Hampshire that the Uovernor noticed it-in his message. The spirit of emigration has prevail ed also in the States which until recently were considered as Western, numerous persons bar ing left Ohio and Indiana for the still further West. More recent accounts show that a reflux in the tide is commencing. In lowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Kansas, the States and Territories forming the principal destination of emigrants, the tendency of speculation has raised land to exorbitant prices; food has neenhighand scarce —some districts Were to the verge of famine.— The difficulties to be encountered in building up the conveniences of a home have far surpassed expectation; and those who went with sanguine Dopes to what they considered theism' of prom ise hare returned disappointed anddiscouraged. Thero is much delusion in regard to the comfort and ease of subsistence in the West. The older portions are already well filled, and the newer aro deficient in ninny of the essentials for do mestic life. A slow and steady emigration is . desirable, but one that is too sudden and eaten-. sire must result only in distress and lath:m.o.- 110 We Courier. ettt. 4 1 < 7 . , .. i ., i t . 61, i %nail:. gutter ., v. t u public. terry e d .. d, contains in `I prepared mad .40 nennelemy evc , ei lert-Ilyfor ' 3' trepanr in the CHAIM:DOM- 04 MB ZEST BRA:4DM" JUDE IN New Yoatr. P At the present time in Now York, there aro thirteen establishments which manu facture champagne, or, in other words, convert still wines into aparkling ones; for no proems has yet been discovered for producing an artificial wine which pommies the flavor and other quail nies of the product of the grape. These manu facturers use for their purpose a light French, and sometimes, it' sparkling hock is to be pro duced, a German wine. The wine, after being prepared by precipitating all substance!' which would, when charged with carbonic acid, ho de posited in the bottle, is subjected toe high Kea nine of carbonic acid by machinery, such as is used for the manufacture of soda water, and af ter being well agitated in contact with the gas, is bottled tinder pressure with a very ingenious machine. At a festival given in New York to a distin guished statesmen, the wine furnished was all made in this city, and was pronounced of excel lent quality by numbers who imagined they were drinking genuine "Ileidaicelc." Within the past year vast improvements have taken Ohre in the manufacture of the article. iCE MOUNTAINS IN VITIGINIA.-A similar nat ural curiosity is described in Appleton's Hand Book of American Travel, •which js located in the county of Hampshire, upon the North River, twenty-six miles northwest of Winchester. The ice mountain rises 500 feet above the river.— "The west side, for a quarter of a mils," says Mr. Hoyt, in his History of Virginia, "in cov ered with a mass of loose stone of a light color, which reaches down to the bank of the ricer. By removing the loose stone, fine crystal ice can always be found in the warmest days of summer. It has been discovered even as late as the 15th of September; but never in October, although it may exist throughout the entire year, and he found, if the rocks were excavated to a sufficient depth. The body of rocks where the ice is found, is subject to tho full rays of the sun, from 9 o'clock in the morning until sunset. The sun does not hare the effect of melting the ice as much as continued rains. At the base of the mountain is a spring of water colder by many degrees than spring water generally is." A CZARINA'S LIIVELS TOR SALE.—The lawsuit concerning the personal property of Catharine the Great of Russia. which has been pending for many years, has at last been decided in favor of rho heirs, who are very numerous, and among whom is - the Prince of Prussia, prospective father-in-law of the Ilritish Princess Royal..
