If he owned a house valued at $lOOO, and carried on business requiring an average stock of t5OOO, his taxes on those two items alone . • would be $9O; if to this he added a slave and a carriage and horse, and had investments in .:.'stocks.or otherwise yielding him a dividend of $3OO, his taxes would amount up to 8143; and in addition (and the supposition is not a ' forced one,) be should sell $lOOO worth of goods, annually, ori commission, they would reach $l6B. In tact, we cannot see how any business man or professional man, doing enough to earn a decent living, could get off nuder $lOO. And this, be it remembered, is for city purposes alone. Compared with Charleston, our city might be suit' to enjoy a very light burden of taxation. Comparison, it is true, does not make our bur den a whit easier to bear; but it may serve, eamewhai, to temper the tone of our complaints. We hope we may never see the day when • Pittsburgh will-have to submit to such rates of taxation as Charleston; but throwing the amounts levied out -of view, there is something in the equality with which taxation is there distributed over 'every so ee of personal income which might very pro , erly be 'copied here, if, in se lading similar objects of taxation, the rates could be so rest • 'nod as to prevent them from bearing heavily r injuriously in arty rasa. • The No York Imbroglio. It is, wo think, quite idle to suppose that there will be any direct fruit of this cruise, or, in other words, thai she wilrover find so much as a bone of the lost Sir John Franklin. Lady Franklin appears to have found new encouragement in the report of Dr Kane, who remarks upon the almost invincible procliv ity of himself and men to sink into the status of the Esquimau:, to live on blubber, and dress and hybernate as they. do. OUR BOOK TAIBLE Setae Prom Nebraska. ,FLoarltca,_,lyi. T., May 30, 1857. -Venn. Edtters: Slaving recently arrived here, We propose to furnish you with a few notes by the way, about matters and events incident to the journey since we left you on the Ist inst. We were nearly three weeks on the way, but it is not to be inferred that all that time has been consumed in travel, as we have proceeded quite leisurely, stopping frequently for business and pleasure. Our first sojourn was for a few days at Cleve land. The Forest City is indeed beautifui.and abounda in splendid privateresidences, but, like Avery thing else under the sun, it has its draw backs. 'We would scarcely exchange the mag nificent mountain scenery and varied natural beauties that environ the good old.city of Pitts burgh, fos the monotonous level and acknowl edged beauties—nearly all more or less artificial and diminutive—of the former, and the smoke of the "Smoky City" is, in good part, offset by the deep burning sand,- the clouds ofdust, the sit:nest constant strong winds, and bleakness characterffitic of the Forest City. Proceeding on our way al , railroad speed, we passed through a .vast, extent of primitive swampy forest, and • open swampy country; and in due Limo baited at the great city of Chicago. So much has been said of „Chicago, pro. and con., it has been so thoroughly praised, puffed, abused and discussed that but • little or nothing new or original can be said about it. We hare visb.od it several times, and, like many other strangers, have declared as often that we never would live there. But, though the first impressions are generally against it, it has some magic charm that draws men from every quaiter, the cry is "still they come," and It annually absorbs many thousands of people. Its lownessand perfect flatness rentlerefficient drainage almost absolutely impossible, and at wet seasons of the year, the water ledges upon a vast extent of surrounding country, so that one can scarcely imagine how health can he maintained at all in such a neighborhood. The citizens have made herculean efforts to overcome this difficulty, but as yet have met only with indifferent success. They have been laudably engaged In efforts to find a descent where there is none, and it is said that every now council establishes a new grade. In trying to hit the right grade, they •hare Imp pity succeeded in securing a varithy, and if any one Mishits for a practical Illustration of the ups aud downs of life, a vigorous walk through the streets for half an hour will amply satisfy him. In the spring; when the frosts are coming 001 of the ground, end after all heavy taint", the mud and pools • of water are appalling to the uninitiated; then after a few hours' sun cloth', of dust are raised and driven about by the un broken prairie winds, and thus, for a good part of the time, especially on the principal business streets, they are alternating between dust-laden winds, and mud-laden water. lint, thanks to the marvelous facility of adaptation to circum stances with which man is endowed, the citizens soon learn comparatively to disregard all of thesedrawbscks, and pass on, filled with the one grand idea that their'sis the.greatest town in all Creation. The St. Louis, Alton and Chicago It. , IL brought us in fifteen hours to Si. Louis. The bustle greeting us as we landed Prom the ferry-boat, was very great,' and the leiee was crowded with drays and • packages, but we were told that business waorather dull thew, in cosi.' parison with what it had been early in nom' which wit' formed sense conception of the immense traffic of thaplace. • ••,• • • Theinternal, enlist/41W, erealtitot*Louie is .iMmense, and. When that great, sparsely settled portion of the Union, now occupied by the territories, and larger in extent than all of the existing States, becomes filled with its teeming millions, and is parcelled out into Mates, Missouri will be the grand centre of the whole, find, as Pennsylvania was the keystone of the federal arch, .o .Missouri will be the Crown of the federal dome. We have often heard a liberty-loving friend regret that so powerful a city, as St. Louis should grow up on slave soil, while its neigh boring free-soil afforded no foothold for a rival. that would shear it of its rising might. but if it be true that St. Louis is awakening to a-just iease of its true interests. if it be true that St. heals is the heart, life and soul of the State, and that as it goes, so goes the state, and if it be true that deliverance there is the precursor of deliverance to its suffering sister states,—all is well. We left St. Louis on the morning ofNey 11, taking the cars to Je ff erson city 125 mt es dis tant. The track winds along rocky hillsides, for a considerable portion of the way, and we rode through four tunnels 400 to OM feet in length.— The view being bounded on one side by river flats and forest, and on the other by hills, one sees little or nothing of t heappe.arance and char actor of the country. As fur boat did not leave until after the aryl cal of the evening train at eight o'clock, we hind Oil or seven hours at Jefferson city, which were partially improv,`Aq by taking a stroll through the place. Some think that the seat of government .should never be in an important commercial town, as the large monied interests concentrated there may too readily sway the dictates of even handed justice. if the absence of commercial bustle guarantees justice, then Jefferson city is safe, and the genius of perfect rectitude presides over the administration of State affairs there, for a more lifeless town of its , . size, we never were in. The transfer of passengers and baggage from the cars to the boat, being duly made, we were soon stemming the ruther rapid tide of the Big Muddy." . . . The Missouri river runs between two ranges of hills. or ••bluffs" as they are generally call d in western parlance, at an average distance from each other, say of six miles. The valley is filled with light alluvion through which the river winds its way from one bluff to the other. The scenery varies between that of the Ohio, and that of the lower Mississippi, now rising into well-wooded hills and rocky bluffs, on one or both sides, and now extending far and wide in endless flats of cotton-wood. The foliage is barely peeping forth, but a-few weeks more will work a magic change, and make the ride a charming one.
