That many men were not killed outright is wonderful. The clubs used in the fight were the heaviest "day clubs," end all the blows given by them were upon the head. It was scarcely fifteen minutes after the fifty roan, under Capt. Sebring, left the Recorder's ogre before they were back again at the door. During the absence nomessenger was discharged to find Major General Sandford. Brigadier Gen eral Hell had been requested, in the event of the niesaenger's ill success in finding Gen. "Good God," said one "General Sandford, what more S you want r "Don't be excited," 'mid the General; "let ns ! hear the story from ihe Coroner P" Coroner Perry proceeded to rehearse it randy, as we have given it above. "That is enough," said the General. The General left, and in five minutes more, about 4 o'clock, the National Guards atit Regi mentywere drawn up in front of the City Ilall. Shortly after 3 P. M., word was brought from the Recorder's °thee, to the Sheriff that Capt. Walling was coming - over to arrest Mayor Wood. A message was sent to the Sheriff asking if re 'sistanco should ho made to the arrest of the Mayor whether he would aid in effecting such. The Sheriff replied that ho would give every legal aid in his power to secure enforcement of the laws. Re regarded Capt. Walling as an officer legally appointed by the Metropolitan', Police Commissioners tinder laws of the State in active force. Mr. Willet, attended by Counsel went over to the Recorder's office to inquiremore fully as to the contemplated arrest. The Re corder produced a warrant drawn up for the arrest of the Mayor, directed to any constable or • !icemen of the city simply. It was decided amend the warrant by directing it also to ihe I Sheriff or any of 1115 deputies. nos amended; the warrant was placed in the hands of the I Sheriff. About an hour after receiving the warrant • during which time the bloody and possibly fatal encounter between Mayor Wood's Police and the Metropolitan Police force occurred at the City Hall, the Sheriff proceeded to the Mayor's office, accompanied by Mr. McKibben. one of hie deputies to serve the warrant. There was no difficulty in obtaining admittnnee to the Mayor. They were shown into the Mayor's oilier and received with marked politeness. The Mayor gave a sidewise glance at the war rant and said that be was willing and ready ; go with hint, and immediately took op his hat and proceeded with the two i n to the outer office. They had hardly closed the door behind then, when a writ of !whom eorpoa was thrust into the hands of the Sheriff. The Sheriff's intention was to have conveyed the Mayor to his own office in the City As the writ of /whom rorpol commanded the production of the Mayor forthwit h before City Judge Russell, he slid not deem it advisahle. in view of the great excitement nethe time prevail ing and the large crowd in attendance around the Roll, to take the Mayor from the City Hall ns his prisoner. - Therefore he left the Mayor itt charge of Mr. M . The Recorder told the Sheriff dint he hail acted judiciously in not bringing the Mayor from the City Hall, lie informed him, however, that ho must retain the Mayor in his custody until he could bring him before Judge'Russell. Afterwards it was ascertained that Judge Russel had gone in the latter part of the day to Glen Core, his place of residence. The receipt of positive assurance to this effect left no re source with the Sheriff but to retain the Mayor in custody all night. When the Recorder heard that a writ of ha bee? rogue, had been served, he issued a third war rant, which he put into the hands of Captain Speight, and directed Gen. Ilall to see him sus tained in executing it. The Mayor at first re fused to recognize .4r. Speight as an officer, but seeing him backed by Gen. Hall he yielded, and it was agreed, on all hands, that Mr. S. should take the Mayor before the Recorder at In o'crk on Wednesday morning. The Recorder requested Gen. Hall to have the military kept under arms all night, as threats had beep made against the persons and property of divers 61.1.1113. The military were also re- Infested to be in readiness at ten o'clock this morning, when the Mayer would be brought be fore the Recorder. At the conclusion the Re corder said "I shall send the officer by himself to-morrow to eiemite thin warrant against Mayor Wood, and if ho is resisted in the execution of hi■ duty shell expect military aid immediately. Gen. Rail answered that he would keep fire regiments under arms all night, and they would be at the disposal of the Recorder in the morn ing. • An indication of the strong publi; feeling of indignation and distrust that has been ezeitcd by the recent proceedings of the City authori ties, is furnished by the tart that upwards of 2,000 citizens of the highest respectability and nodal position hare offered to enrol themselves into a special* police, for Ore protection of the public weal, and the preservation of the pence of Lite city. Tho operations . of the military yesterday were conducted with a promptness and quiet decision that reflect tho highest credit not only on the officers but the Men under their command. The speedy appearance of the ith Regiment was doubt the means of averting a serious conflict. Cartridge boxes end steel have a soothing effect on the pugnacious instincts of angry men. The Seventh Regiment, attired in its newest uniform. and additionally buoyant from the prospective pleasures of an excursion to Boston —an excursion on which they have expended, it is said, upwards of slo, ooo—marched gallantly down Broadway on the way to the steamer. Its festive career was at once arrested, and the men proccedecyo City, Hall. They were)nformgd of the unpleasant duty that devolved upon them, and without a Murmur relinquished their hopes of Boston glory. The presenee'of this splendid corps, corning as it did with perfect instantane ousness, had the must salutary effect ou the rioters. Hail it been delayed for an hour or two there would have been, without doubt, a fierce and sanguinary brittle. As it was, they eclipsed the angry stars, sonic of whom gazed out of the open windows of the Cijy with most woe begone faces. The Eighth Regiment was also bound for Boston, but when their services were required, acted with cheerfulness, notwithstand ing some slight difficulty with nu officer at the outset. A volley from the lilt Regiment, situated as it was, would not have been attended with very fatal consequences, fur iris doubtful if the en tire burly possessed a single ball-cartridge at the moment of its grand demonstration in front of the City Hall. But they were not. long before they obtained an ample supply. Major-General Sandford scut au order to Commissariat-General Ward for ammunition, and that officer immedi ately dispatched Major Anthem and Major Smith. with 100 rounds of grape and eaunister, and 0000 rounds of ball-cartridge- The following regiments were also called out: The 4th. tinder Col.
