'Bell hid his knife open in his right hand, and on recognizinethe o ffi cer, he sprang to his feet, and attempted to stab him. Scott ran back wards lentil he could draw his mace, when he tapped Bell on the head, and knocked him down. The 'blow wan so slight that Bell soon recovered, and made a second attack, when a tremendous blow from the mace brought him senseless to the ground. The officer then took the knife, and coned upon the cid/ens to aid him, in he did not ?wish to injure the man further. The crowd refused to assist, and began to mut ter about the brutality, of the constable. During the brief time that here elapsed, 'Bell again re covered, and though bleeding profusely, he made a desperate attack upon the officer with a paving stone, was struck with' the mace and felled a third -time. On recovering, Bell agreed to go to the look-np peaceably, and they started to gether; but before they had proceeded the dis tance of a square, the prisoner attempted to es cape, and was again knocked down. The crowd here began to sympathise with the prisoner, and when the officer started with him, he was assail ed by a volley of paving atone% none of which took effect. ne was then beset in the rear, his arms were held, and the prisoner permitted to Tun. At this juncture he drew a revolver, and presented it at the breast of the ring•teader Las he was abont hurling a stone, when the white livered villain screamed most piteously, "Oh for God's sake don't shoot—don't shoot—we'll throw no more!"
