Ctrrnao Boast's Taaoas.—Arrest of the
c i a.rmwsigioody Cc:it/tin mad Rum of the
prisser...Yesterday afternoon, the attention of
%
Cannabis Scott, or Allegheny; was attract
„id s him crowd on Robinson street, and on
making inquiry he leased that a man named
Robert (or "loader”) BA in company with two
o wn , had assaulted • wagoner, who fled and
took refuge in a hour; sad that Bell, being
chagrined at the, escape of tha man, had vented
his mains by saying the throat of the bone
with a dirk-knife.
Officar Scott started ingitpursnit of Bell, and
surprised him while sitting on the bank of the
dlleghenty below the outlet of the canal.
'Bell hid his knife open in his right hand, and on
recognizinethe o ffi cer, he sprang to his feet,
and attempted to stab him. Scott ran back
wards lentil he could draw his mace, when he
tapped Bell on the head, and knocked him down.
The 'blow wan so slight that Bell soon recovered,
and made a second attack, when a tremendous
blow from the mace brought him senseless to
the ground. The officer then took the knife, and
coned upon the cid/ens to aid him, in he did not
?wish to injure the man further.
The crowd refused to assist, and began to mut
ter about the brutality, of the constable. During
the brief time that here elapsed, 'Bell again re
covered, and though bleeding profusely, he made
a desperate attack upon the officer with a paving
stone, was struck with' the mace and felled a
third -time. On recovering, Bell agreed to go to
the look-np peaceably, and they started to
gether; but before they had proceeded the dis
tance of a square, the prisoner attempted to es
cape, and was again knocked down. The crowd
here began to sympathise with the prisoner, and
when the officer started with him, he was assail
ed by a volley of paving atone% none of which
took effect. ne was then beset in the rear, his
arms were held, and the prisoner permitted to
Tun. At this juncture he drew a revolver, and
presented it at the breast of the ring•teader Las
he was abont hurling a stone, when the white
livered villain screamed most piteously, "Oh
for God's sake don't shoot—don't shoot—we'll
throw no more!" But "snap" wentlEii pistol,
the barrel of which had slightly turned, , Co as
to prevent the hammier from falling upon the
cap. The dastardly whelp, finding himself still
alive tocik to his heels end all the test followed
closely on his trail.
On returning to look for the prisoner, the offi
cer was mortified to find that he had got beyond
his reach.
Bell wu seen on the West common, about
dusk in the evening, covered with blood from
beadle foot. He is a notorious villain, and hue
been for many years. He will, no doubt, yet be
taken, and we hope those who wilted in his
rescue will also meet with ,merited punishment.
The man who owned thelorse became so ter
rified at witnessing the affray, that he fled, and
his not yet made his name known. It le thought
that the horse will die.—Uttion.

Mtt.wincts, : Nov. 9.—The result is doubtful
In regard to the contest upon the State ticket.
The vote se far is heard from Is now very close.
The complexion of the legislature is not yet de
cided. Intelligence has been received of the
election of 14 Republicans sod 11 Democrats to
the Renate, while there has beert 32 Republicans
and 33 Democrats, elected to the Assembly.
(880089 DISPATCH.)
MILITAIIKIII, Nov. 9.—ln 18 counties the vote
stands: Barstow ;190, Richland 6586.
Winnebago county has just reported 1400 ma
jority for Bashford. If true, the Republican
ticket is probably elected.
GALINA, Nov. 9.—The returns from Wisconsin
as tar as received show a trifling majority for
Baahford, Republican.
New Yam, Nov. 9.—The Washington corres
pondent `of , the Courier and Enquirer suttee
that official &dykes of much importance were
brought by Mr. Buchanan by the last steamer.
Lord Palmerston, after two years of solicitation
for a decision, ties at length explicitly declared
that Her Majesty's Government will not conform
to the American construction of the Clayton end
Deliver treaty and will not abandon the new
colony of. the Bay of islands; will not recognize
the old boundaries of the Central American re
public, so thosti intended by the treaty and wilt
not relinquish the protectorate over the Mosquito
blends.
• The Clayton and Bolwer treaty is therfore re
pudiated by both governments, and therefore no
longer exists. This' unexpected change in the
relation of the 11. S. towards Central America
will lead to a moat important political revolu
tion. The enterprise of Walker and Kenney will
soon bring up the question of annexation in a
form that cannot be evaded. Two seperate propo
sitions for the annexation of a portion of the
States have been already made to the present
administration, the sole obataclo to which wee
the Clayton and Solver treaty.
No additional troops have been sent or order
ed to Texas, but the War Department has sig
nified its afiproval of Coo. Smith's plan of re
moving the:forces already there.
Additional returns give Headley, K. N., for
Secretary et State a plurality of nearly 13,000
over King, Iteipublioaa;- there are six counties to
hear from; three returns from which will probe- .
bly deems. Headley's plurality.
The Assembly stands Republicans 18; Amer-
IMES 81 and Democrats 15, with 44 to hear
from.
In this city and county owing to the fusion of
Herds and Bofts on some of the nominations the
successful candidates according to present ap
pearance are equally divided among the Dem
ocrats and Anieriesns. The Herald of thin mor
ning in its footing up of the reehlt on the Sec
rotary, shows the following vote; Headley K. N.
78,586; King, Republican, 69,917; Hatch, Soft
Democrat, 48,452; Ward, Hord, 34,011.
