Strohm teething sad prao tieing in regard t the • Sabbath ! 'When he de clared en emphatically that he came not to 'de: stroy hut to fulfil the law (Matt. 5. 17) it is plain that he meant mainly, the moral law. HoiSthen itsiuld the 4th Commandment have been abrogate& by him! - Accordingly he goes on, in his wonderful, sermon,' to expound several of the Commandments-and to show in regard to all, that, a true, spiritual. obedience of them was required. Be came to set forth the moral law in its true \ mearting Sad to divest it of the pervertions mind abuses which the corrupt carnalietio, _Pharisee* bad put, upon it.—And though this object of hisis so clearly stated, the objector will have it, that in expounding the law, 'he meant to explode it—that in.denouneing the abuses, he meant to diaapproie and disannul She law itself? Whet.a grand blunder its this! Because he rebuked the pentagons of the sth Commandment in regard to Cordon, (Mark 7. 11) did he mean to' annul the commandment h nd? Or, rather did he design to purge the - law from the wicked glosses of the scribes. And why would he so carefully expound the 4th Commandment if It um no longer is tome! Is it not truly amazing' that the decree of elw.dimetolic Council should be adduced against the Sabbath ordinance, because "there is no mention made of it theid" Acts 16. 20. But the Jewish Sabbath, with its ceremonial regaled- Mons was not laid men thins canasta. The moat that could prove would be that the old, Jewish Sab bath was "a shadow of. things to come," like. other types and shadowe of the old economy.— What then? - It would only establish oar point that the obristian Sabina' the "Lord's Day," is that of which the Sevent h day Sabbath was s type and a shadow. Bat the passage relates to. the ceremonial Sabbath, of which there were sever al,. quite distinct from the weekly Sabbath. The ' objector preverts the meaning by making ithead &Meth day," whetrit is "Sabbaths." Again, Pout, in his letter to the Gelatines is cited as condemning them forl, "observing days ; and mauths and times and Yews" There wore those e!b;tid tide, se there ire yet, thse who enter so o the Jewish spirit as to keep most numer oush y-clays, and a whole calendar of times and seesaws Of there the apostle is justly "afraid." Could he be . afraid of them for keeping the obsidian Sabbath? Not. but for a spirit of bon dage to observances so tumorous and ritualistic as to overshadow the sanctity of the Lord's day. There Is but one hobpddy authorised in the New Testament and that is the: Christian Sabbath. But the objector turthei alleges siding the Divine authority of the Sabbath, that Paul dis regarded the Sabbath "by setting off on %jour ney upon the first day of the week, without, so far us It appears, the slightest necessity for it."
