The Anti-Amerioans may assert and protest and swear os strongly as they will, that thelfear ful note of Monday were began by the Ainesi cane, hut in disproof of this, the broad, palpable, undeniable, and I:whined feet stands out; that the first bloodshed, the first killing, the first murdering, both in the upper and lower parts of the city were the work of the foreign born popu lation. The foreigners may have imagined that they did not have fair play at the polls, but; they were the fret to resort to assamination. - They may hive falsely imagined that an attack 'upon themselves was cromtemplated, but they were the thrst.to resort to assassination. They may have erroneously supposed that they were renleriog an important serrioe to God and mankind, but they were the fret to resort to amortization. And when foreign born cltisens, with- not the shadow of &justification ' assassinate American citizens in our streets, what can be expected but that the aroased spirit of our aotuatrymen will rage and thiret for revenge? Even by the admission of one of the JAnti- American organs of yesterday, the Irish to the lower part of the city on Monday evening, ) with no other provocation than the knocking down of an Irishman in the street, opened a general fire from the windows of their Mune, discharging volley after volley among the American citizens. And - who will say that so common a thing as a blow given by an individual in the street afford ed a pretext for a general discharge of (Irish musketry from concealed places upon American throngs? Can it be thought strange if some of our countrymen, enranged by the spilling a the blood of their kindred under ouch circumstances of atrocity, took quick vengeance into theik own hands and carried it to &lamentable extent? The disparity between the number of foreign born and native-born citizens killed is but Small, and the coroner can bear witness and manic hun dreds of others can bear witness that the .first persona killed in both extremities of the city were Americans—ehot down like dogs by Unseen foes. Unquestionably a large number et the Americans, infuriated by the massacre of their friends,-have evinced a- disposition to go I much too far in the work of retaliation—and herein they are guilty; but this ,ball not deter na from the assertion and reiteration of the palt fact that American bosoms were stained with I blood before American hands were. r , We all know that it was considered very doubt ful on Monday morning ithether the whole vote of the city could be polled within the thirteen home of the election. The native born Ameri can citizens thought and felt, that, :if any por tion of the people legally entitled to roteishould have to stand back and lose their suffrages for want of time, the foreign born cititeithehould stand back rather than themselves. Theythought and felt that this ought to be-perfectly manifest even to the minds-of the foreigners. Undoubt edly they pressed forward early and vigorously to the polls, in order to be the first, if pOssible, and in this they were right. They had • perfect right to go, if they chose, to the polls at 12 o'clock on Sunday night and remain there till the following morning. They hid a right to go at what time they pleased and in what I:timbers they could. 'They had a right Oven to tolls their friends over the heads of the crowd to the polls, as we are told they did in some few initances, though this was no doubt a violation of courtesy. They had a right to vote as fast as they could, provided they used no violence in (pulling or thrusting back.their opponents from the polls, and we have not heard it alleged that they did this in a solitary instance. Oornamandence of the Indiana Doll. 13elitinel, Louisville, August 7, 1865.---On Monday morning, at 4 o'clock, the place of votingin the let end Bth Wards, winch are the strong Demo credo precincts, were taken possession of by the Know Nothings. A few of the old Democratic citizens in these Wards were permitted to'vote in the morning. but all others who were unable to give the eiges, were rudely thrust from theipolls. This state of things prevailed to a greater or less extent in all the Wards. If an Irishman or German attempted 'to approach the polls he was driven back with bloody missile'', Native born American citizens, who were unable to give the proper signs and signals, shared the same fate. To entitle a citizen to the privilege of a voter, he must, to use the Know Nothing slang, be "rioAt on the goose question." By 10 o'clock the city was under the, control of a lawless Know Nothing mob—neither life nor property was safe. At this crisis Hon Win. P. Thomaston, formerly • Whig member of Con gress from the city, and a gentleman of high character and standing, mounted the rostrum and implored them segood citizens, to desist from snob a course. He had, however, spoken but a few moments, when the Know Nothing signal for blood was given, and he was instantly knocked down by a stub, in the hands of some' ( assassin who approached him in the rear. About, Able time, Col. Preston, the anti-Know Nothing candidate for Congress, appeared at the First Ward, which is the large Democratic Ward, composed chiefly of Gonne') naturalized citizens, and requested his friends not to attempt to vote. He stated to them that the polls were in the haids of Know Nothing bullies, that his 'friends could not approach the polls in safety, and advi sed them to retire peaceably to their homes and submit to disfranchisement rather than endenger their lives The remit was that out of 6,600 votes in the city, only 4,600 were polled. T'wo thousand Democratic voters were by violence de prived of the right of suffrage. About six o'clock in the *vetting, the Know Nothing bullies, armed to the teeth with muskets and a large beam cannon, under the Asoutrol of .Capt. Stone, pr seeded to that part of the city.
