The fearful sacrifice of human life before and in Sebastopol, by disease and the casualkes of war, since the 'commencement of the siege, are fearful to con template, and. yet the besiegers deem to be se tar from the object of three great sacrifices a. ever. Thls, only confirms the view early taken that a place so strongly fortified, and garrisoned . with eo powerful a force, with ample means of re inforcement, cannot be taken. It L. one of the enigmas -we cannot solve, why a different policy has not been pursued, at least since the Allies • have possession of-the Sea of Aloft It appears to us, at this distanoe from the scene of action, that the true way of subduing Sebastopol is to take possession of the Isthmus of Perekop and .any other means of land and teat oommimication which the Russians may have, and thus effect ually starve the Russians into submission. The Czar'e forces In the Crimea most be very large, and the daily outiamption by men and horses must be immense: The Allies have the command of both seas,4eaving only one means of commu nication open. To seize this seems to be the nat ural mode of procedure, as then the larger the Russian force in the Crimea the soooner they , would be compelled to surrender. By the pres ent mode of procedure the question is only one ' of men and means, Both the Allies and the Cur are exhausting their armies and their money, and the victory will eventually tarn on the side which can hold out the longest in furnishing men and money. There may be, however, sound reasons why the policy of 'seising Perekop can . not be 'adopted, and it will be for the credit of the allied cOntmanders Ito convince the world of this. It undeniable that the allies are undergo ing imams') lessee, both in men and money, suffloient soon to weaken if not exhaust the great western nations which have entered into theeon filet ; but thin exhausting process is by no means confined to one aide. It is only by the most herculean efforts that Russia is able to keep up the strength and material of her army in the Cri met.- That Peninsula. is situated at the extrem ity Of the Cur's dominions, and scarcely con tains sufficient food to supply its Inhabitants.— Sines the destruction of the shipping in the Sea of &off, the only mode of supplying material and provisions, le by land carriage of some two or three hundred miles, for the country In the neighborhood of Odessa has long eine° been ex baaated. The cattle, or horses,. and teamsters who take this provision to the army must carry their own food with them, and if they re- turn, must take enough back to last them at least part of the way. The immense teams re quired to supply a hundred thousand men with food, as well as the Material of war can hardly !mote, by land carriage, over bad roads must be attended with an expense in money, and an ex ' Unseen of horses, cattle and provisions fearful 4 to Contemplate. In this view of the case, "a masterly insetivity," if Perekop cannot be own pled, appears to be the had policy. `'laving the command of the sea, the allies can supply every requisite for the war with more certainty and ease and at far leas expense than the Czar. tinder all aspects of the case, the Beige of Be beitopel is the moot renuakable the world hie. trrer, witnessed, and its future history will throw into the shade those famous sieges which have .so long commanded the wonder and admiration of"the'-world. • - Wasantorms Couurr.—The Whig County Con vention that met in Washington on Monday last appears to have resulted - in confusion and sepa ration. ' . .The piny thus appears to be hopelessly split— alaige portion going off to help ICn ow-110030p ism fight out the battle between the rival De mocratic &edam of that county, and the other portion anzioim to retain their -old position. The two tickets now in the Held there, and called by courtesy the "Democratic" and the ,JiiAsneric' an" tickets, are nothing but a new phase of an old family quarrel in the Demo , •akin porty. Mi. Reeder is no more an "Abolitionist" than bro. D. Pass nos, the editor of the Journal,:and never wrote half u hard . things of slavery as the latter did before he became a Enow Nothing.' Gov. Reed er has about half done his duty in endeavoring to carry out the "squatter sovereignty" doctrine with tairnese to all parties. It was his duty to have taints more active measures than he did to presentite outrages of the Missourians, but his I Ina-hearted anti timoroniconduct in his efforts to seijustice done, has not saved him from the charge of being an abolitionist. Every body who will not yield implicity to the demands of slavery is now denounced at the South as an abolitionist, which means everything the most despised and I hated iu Southern estimation. We are surprised, however, to see such a paper as the Loidsville Journal falling into this unjust and dishonest course. It knows well enough that Gov. Reeder is not nu abolitionist, but that to give him a bad name is:the best way to break him down. If such poor Anti-Slavery men as 64_1:Ludes. are abolitionists, then the South had better look out. The few Doughfaces left cannot prevent the North from asserting its power. A communication in the Indianapolis Journal of June 30th states that epeoulatore and inter- Wed mon have endeavciredto get up a panic by representing, that the wheat crop in that section was likely to be almost a total failure; and some timid and faithless farmers allowed their fears to get the better of their good sense. One far mer was so foolish as to dispose of twenty acres of wh, ,t for one hundred. dollars, which now bids Lir to ; Id at least fifteen bushels of excellent t, the acre—an operation that will make a loser to the amount of several hundred dol lars. Other farmers were prevented from mow ing or ploughing up their wheat-fields, after the late frosts, only by the earnest remonstrances of their neighbors and friends. Notwithstanding the hard frosts in that region, the promise of a good crop there is very flattering. 0 A correspondent of they London Nark Lane &peat says that, so backward has been the sea son In England, the harvest cannot be gathered until September, at least a fortnight or three weeks later than usual, which delay will be further increased from a week upwards by the shortening of the days at that advanced period of the year. He argues that, consequently, the reserves of old grain on hand usually held over to mix with the new, will be all consumed before the new can be gathere'd, and adds, that there is not a single European market from which they can draw supplies. A very fine opening will therefore occur for the grain products of this country, as soon as prices oome down sufficient ly low to justify shipments. The Houston (Texas) Gazette says that there is a German paper published at San Antonio, in that State, called the Zcitung, the Editor of which maidens slavery a curse, and incompatible with republicanism, and who also thinks that the Ger mans of Texas are opposed to slavery. The editor of the Houston paper, of course, wants to have the German Editor hustled out of the State and sent to Africa, or some other place, where he can do no harm to the Texas slaveholdera This la a free country, where every man has a right to utter his thoughts and' where the press is un trammeled—at least, so we are told. MUSHROOM FANR.—The honors at the battle of • Ban Jacinto bare for some years clustered around the modes; head of Gen. Ben Houston, at present a very prominent aspirant for the Presidency. Time, however, is tearing them away from him, as would appear by the follow ing from the 0. Picayune: It would teem, from what !Snow transpiring in Texas, that the history of the battle of San Jacinto is yet to be written. The materials are getting to be very abundant, for which we are indebted to Gen. Sam Houston, more, it appears, from the facts which are coming out, than Texas yea indebted to him for the victory itself. In a late speech made on the anniversary of the bat. tie, be gave a version of the. history of its loci ' dents, and his own connection -with them, which has brought out a host of indignant commonta tors, who not only deny the truth -of his narra tive, but accuse him of cowardice and incapa city. The first to reply was David R. Burnett, formerly Provident of Texas, and by the mails. Which arrived yesterday, we have two other ad drams—coo by lien. Sidney. Sherman, and one by Gen.. Mirabeau B. Lawn, also once Neel dent of Texas. These, gentlemen were m etre during the battle of San Jacinto, and they con cur with Burnett in declaring Gen. Houston's narrative false throughout, and in affirming that the battle was fought against the wishes and judgment of Houston, who is accused, moreover, •of behaving with personal cowardice as well as - showing utter incapadity as a general. Gen. Sherman says that when ever a full narrative of the battle is given truthfully to the world ' , Gem Houston's mushroom (ante will rapidly de oompole and Sink into putrescence with the mast of faleeboods ' upon which it rests," and Gen. Under the combined influence of the sweltering weather ands hot contest, it is reported that several of the aspirants for place lost their tein pers, and heightened the interest of the political strife by episodical exhibitions of the pugilis tic art. Nobody, we believe, was hurt in these personal scuffles, but they serve to show how very dangerous it is for politicians to venture upon an. electoral can-vass in the middle of the doz-daya." The New York Cowl; thinks the census of New York, now being taken, will show the pop ulation to have increased 200,000 in the last five years, making the present population 750,000. One ward, the 11th, ocoopying a territory of only about three-tenths of a mile square, has a population of about 65,000.
