FRIDAY MORNING, JULY 6; 1: • • . Tins Loss or me Lextooros.—The Louisville Journal gives the following account of this dis aster, which we have previously reported: "The Lexington, Capt. Throop, left St. Louis on Wednesday evening for this port. On Sat urday morning before daylight she ,possed the H. A. Given near Stephensport where the latter landed. thipt Wood noticed the 'Lexington was running very slow, and was under the im pression that something wasnot right. The D. A. Given ie a stern. wheeler and there was no . , competi tion between the boats, lathe Lexington had side wheele and was much larger and had 'probably double as much power as the Given.. We. state this from the fact of the boats being 'cloaca°. gether, some might infer that they were racing. When about four miles above Slepheneport, the Lexington exploded all her boilers, the tutplosiolt carrying with it' the whole cabin forward - of the wheel-house and the texas. Most of the passeo gen were asleep in their berths, and also the., officers and crew exceptthose detained an watch. All on the forward port of the boat were blown , up with the cabin, some falling in the river, and others on the wreck. Many were so seri ously hurt, as to be altogether unconscious, and they do not know how they .wero saved, while others managed by catching plecer of planks and fenders on which they swam ashore. Capt. Throop foil from the hunioane deck, ;but was caught by the second mate, who lips standing on the forecastle, before lie reached the dick, oda erivise he would have been killed Instantly- This mate, though immediately forward of the boilers, sustained no tartly. The clerk found himself in the river with his desk close beside him. But we cannot relate all the hair-breadth escapes of individuals. Not a soul In the cabin back of the wheel-house was Injured. Bat few of the deck passengers were wounded. Immediately after the explosion the boat took fire, but the ready assistance rendered by the D. A. Given, which was only half a mile off, and by persona from the shore with flatboats anti skiffs; saved the lives of most of them. Some little bag-, gage was saved, but very many escaped with nothing but their night clothes. The D. A. Given then took mostof the passen gers beak to Stepheosport to procure 'reedier' assistance. After the D. A. Given left the J. C. Freemont come: along.and took on board Several of the wounded and others. The Fremont 'reached here on Saturday night. Mr. T. B. Wall, of Liberty, Mo., was among theta. He spitainei very serious injuries, and lost a large amount of money. He was taken to the house of 'a friend in this city, Mr. Clinger. Jahn • Barnard of this city, and W. C. Harkins of Madisen, were also seriously wounded, but not dangerously. Among the wounded en the D. A. Given, was Capt. Thomas White,--of,this city, and he is in a dangerous condition. Me. Badger one of the pi lots of the Lexington, who was naleen when the explosion occurred, it is feafed will not 'survive. He was taken care of somewhere in the city. Mr. W. W. Johnston, of Madison, was also suf fering severely. He was taken home on the Ja cob Strader yesterday morning. None of the la .dies and children were hurt. • • •• It is somewhat strange that but very few per sons were scalded. Those wounded were brains contusions and broken limbs. The boat was running when the explosion oe cursed, and from. this it is generally inferred that there could have been little if any water in the boilers. The seeondengineer, who was on watch was killed. The passengers speak In the highest teiniti of Capt. Wood, of the D. A. Given, hie officers and crew. They did everything to alleviate the kit tering, of the unfortunate passengers: Capt. W. distributed among them all the clothee he could possibly spare. The physicians or Ste phensport and Dr. Hawn, of Cornucopia, were unremitting in their attentions to the wounded. The efforts of the Fremont are also highiy spo- I ken of by those who came , up on her. ' The hull of the boat floated down to Stephens port where it was caught and moored. • The Lexington did not belong to the St. LOUIS packet line. Capt. Throop had been periaitted to place the Lexington is the line temporarily in place of the Fashion which was sunk some weeks ago. The L. formerly belonged; to this port, but was sold a few months ago to a St. Louie company. She was an old boat, andxhe steamboat inspectors had [totaled her Cornier owners that this was tho last season she could be run, atom they sold her. She was then under the j_urisdiotion of the P.O Lania 1t..." loPer-, _4ll the books . attiplrs havio lost, it was iitipouDiTe to ascertain the prat se um er of persons lost. This Charge has elicited a reply from the long missing; Robert Schuyler ; which we find in the New York Tri bune. That paper says it came by the last steamer, but bears no date, and does not even indicate Mr. 13.'el present residence. We quota the material portions of the letter: It appears that the President stated . that the company had sustained a total each loss 'elf capi. tel of $187,527, by , the various operations set' forth' in the Directors' report ascribed j to me. If LW strength to do so, I should , examine the detaihrof these statements and show • yen, as bhlleye, that Done of them are fonnded, oto facto, and that the conclusion is erroneous and pntrue, and that no loss of cash capital has been the con sequence of any act of mine. But I - ton only able at present - to point out one single error, which,' however, is of greater amount than the whole alleged lose, and whielv on correction, at once places the balance on the other sidS. The account of R. & 0. L, S., is charged {by 'the - ,Treasurer on 218 t September, 1855, for 8200 shares Harlem preferred 'stock $159,200, for which sum that stock was sold to them, and for which they agreed to retire the bonds! of the company.due latOotober, 1858, on which pay, meat had been originally made for the stook. No other previeion was made for these bootie, 1 and on the let October, and subsequently on pre sent/alp°, all of them, amounting to $lBO,OOO, I Were taken up by the firm, partly in cash, (about $110,000) and the remainder by exchanging with I the holders other bonds.pf the, sompany belong big to the firm. Atter tbe, ltat bond woepaid, believe that the amount of the sale woe stunted I and the balance due paid to the company in cash I or its equivalent., The construction books aloce cograined the amounts of the stook and honds, and should also show the particulars of the sale i and settletnepts, and I have no doubt they do so; and if they do not the facts are substantially as I state them. It follows, then, either that the Treasurer's debit should not have been made, or that the Pres ident, In combining the twq boob, and ma.:lng re-entries, for the porpose o of correcting errors, should have credited the.account of B G. L B. with full payment for the stock of $189,200, whereby the flgurei which he states to resint in a balance against them of $89,200 would chow a balance of $BO,OOO in their fa% vor, even if the other items were correct, which is not admitted. I make no comment on these errors, but presume them to have been anthem flonal. Though I did not intend to trouble yen as to the other charges. I beg to say as to the allegation that $10,168 were paid to me for spe cifio purposes, and not applied as intended, that if it is Intended to assert that these stuns were di rectly or indirectly applied to my own red, that after n most careful seltexamination, I do not remember a single case of the kind, nor that any person ever applied to me or directly through any one else for the payment of anyintended ap propriation not paid over. If it is meant that there are no vouchers to show the psymente, though the amount strikes me m greater than I supposed, yet it Is true that many payments In the nature of secret service were made, to which no vouchers could be re quired. I believe, however, that the direotore had a general knowledge of these payments, and ,deemed "them necessary. I am also charged with $5,000 drawn from the earnings of the road for Norwalk damages. lam confident that I placed with the treasurer vouchers for •every draft upon him, except for the amounts paid with the knowledge and , approval of the direc tors, as coronet fees of a confidential character to gentlemen of standing and influence,. which can be shown, I believe, if necessary, by others than myself—and except also the ram of $5OO drawn for lost baggage, expenses and fees, wait ing payment when I left my office, and I pre same not paid over.
