'The ritual of the Order wan taken up, and greatly modified, The most of it was dispensed with.. The tales for admitting members were simplified, and the number of degrees, signs and -grips, were reduced to one each. This is a great advance in the right direction, • but notnnough , to secure entire co-operation and union with the Reintblican messes of tho North; _ , . Sectary must be entirely aboliahed,:end Foreign born citizens moat be_ placed on terms 'of entire equality, before all hindrances are removed oat Of the way. The platform should be purged of every thing 'which will prevent any friend of • Northern rights from giving it his hearty con.- eminence. The proceedingsyrnich took place at 'the .11/11.1111 Meeting held in public, on the same evinced that the Le:ultra-of the party are prepared to ' go to the proper length to units the freemen a the North. Goy. Gardner was thilirst speaker, and he called upon the North, as one man to be netted in the support of the great principleSof freedom. Nothing was said of Nadvism. - Jona W. Agit is, it remarjor: "A typal:diem ragan is practically denied.— The people do tot want a know nothingietn— they want a ttudon earl who are willing to act heroto gainst slavery aggreagion. They want no g g ther test than this; end we believe they will vindicate their purposes in this respect, inepite of the warrow. and selfish action at Boston, on Thursday." The same paper lets us into a secret, Which explains the remark of the Atlas, above quoted, that "Ocean upon the whole people of the State to meet in convention, has not been uttered." The which is said to be • the compost- eon of Gov. 9ardiar, .does npt appear as it was originally written, but wan emasoulated by the Council by striking, out s proposition fora gen eral republican fusion convention at Springfield. the suppressed passage was as follows: "And we call upon our fellow-citisens of Mas sachusetts, of every name and party, who agree with the sentiments of the platform signed by our delegates to the said. convention, to assem ble in their several cities and towns, in public meetings, duly notified, and to select three dele gates. for each repmesentatlie said city or town is entitled to send to the General Court, on value- tint' years, to= American Republiean State Con •ention, to be held at Springfield on Friday, July 18th, at 12 o'clock noon, that day being the an niversary of the passage of the ordinance of 1787, for the purposes of laying down a platform• of principles, and transacting such other 'business as the said convention may deem expedient." It is very evident that the people of , Massa chusetts will be satisfied with nothing lees than a thorough union of the Anti-slavery- sentiment on equitable and fair terms. All otLer issues most be laid aside. The people are growing daily more impatient with these aide issues which divide aud weaken the North, and thus give to the South an easy victory. There is a united South in favorof slavery and slavery extensioN and there must be a united North to roll back the advancing wave of oppression, THE CENTUAL ROAD AND TKO STATE WOUND. —The Phi ...Adphia North-demean treats the purchase of the care, boats and stocks of the chief Canal Transportation Companies, by the PenneylyaniaßailroadCompany,as a hypothetical ease. Tide is not a fair way of treating the sub ject- If any information were desired, it could easily be obtained to verify the fact of the trans action, we presume, by applying at the office in Philadelphia. The fact of such purchase bee never been dented, and there can be no reason able doubt that such a purchase has taken place. The severe remarks of the North-American against such a purchase receive additional force when viewed in - connection with the actual eziat ence of the transaction which the editor oppo- see. The North-American tape: "The fact ether-zed is that the Direatori of the Central road haVe bought, or are endeavoring to buy the interest of the several transporting firms who have been using the Main Line for the earrings. of freight between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.. For two or three OtiTiON4 rea sons ilia sincerely to be hoped that the measure has not eo much as been contemplated. In the fiiat place; it is highly desirable, both as re gards the welfare of the Commonwealth and its citizens, that the improvements ht question. The people are concerned' to hove them in use, because they afford increased fiellitieir for a large local and general commerce, and bye com petition with other lines -of communication, and to avoid the excessive charg,e, other evils to which trade is exposed by monopolies. --The State is equally interested in the came Object, - both in respect of the immediate revenue it de rives from the works, and the practicability of effecting *sale of them at a fair price. In view, therefore, of these considerations, the. attempt by a private corporation to put the Main Line out of service, and in effect to close 'it against the pubile by taking Dont of the hands of the companies who have been employing it in the transportation business, cannot' but be re garded as a movement alike hostile to the gem, trument and the people - of Penveylimeia. The former finds its chief improvement thrown out of use, and its character injured at the very_ moment when it le most important that nothing should occur to depreciate its seine, while the latter are suddenly shut off from a great high way originally built for their advantage. with their own money, in order that a powerful corpora tion may monopolize -the carrying Itrade on the route connecting the Delaware with the Ohio river, and impose on the commnuity whatever terms it may choose to prescribe (fir the privil ege of transit between the points designated. While we cannot imagine what sufficient pos sible benefit could induce the President and Di rectors of the Pennsylvania Central road to incur the enmity and opposition of theCotnmonwealth, I and the people generally, by any such setter% as that alleged to have been taken in! reference to the Main Line, we are able to foresee qiiite clear ly that the bad feeling so imprudeittly provoked may result hereafter in very merlons, if not fatal 'consequences to the Central road and all who I are interested in its fortunes l and success. Whetheir it be true or not, that the motive for the proceeding wee ; to prevent a sale by the State of Its improvements, with a clew to gain for the - Pennsylvania - Railroad •Conipany the power of dictating hereafter the conditions an which it will agree to biker' them, it is nevertheless certain that, should' , • such be the effect produced, the public rebid will be highly incensed, the credit of the corporation chargeable with the mischief will be greatly impaired, and it is even possible that popular indignation may be so violent as to require sod obtain an act of legislation which will be. disastrous to the Cen tral road. Besides perceiving ne.jost occasion for interfering in any mariner with the interests of "the public works, we are not prepared to be . - lieve that, if such a step wore supposed to be proper or expedient, the Directors of the Penn sylvania Railroad Company would assume the responsibility of • resoleing on so grave and dangerous a measure, without first asking the advice and obtaining the consent of the stock holders." While the North American thus very properly castigates thol;divoti:Ors of the Railroad Comps for attempting to destroy the business of the canal, itt order to build up a monopoly for the I. Railroad,' it very strongly urges the Railroad Company to hey out the canal I Now, if the pur- chase of the stook ofthe transporting companies at a kriCe above their, value for the purpose of monopolizing the carrying trade, is so great a wrong to the peOple of the 'Mite, no is justly alleged by the North American, will not the purohase of the Canal be a still greater wrong? In the first cue, the 'evil can be repaired, and the monopoly preyented by inducing other corn- panics to enter into the transportation business;. but in the latter cue the ntorkitpidy will be per petual, as far as the canal is co corned, It will be lost to the people i f the Bate as a public highway, and the Ba road Cominny will be the real autocrat 'of the carrying trade and travel of the State. We do not believe that the interests of the Railroad Company Will be advanced by int& a purchase, while the Interts of -the peo ple will be greatly leopards& We feel's deep interest lit the welfare of the Railroad, and we beg the Directors to pause and Consider well, I:e= fore they proceed farther in ithia dangerous movement. . 1 , Ouzo, aan bltssuusrest BAILROAD.—We Mated iesterasy that the Ohio and Mississippi Railroad was completed to. the Wabash, Sad 'that a con tinuons southern Railroad rOittsifrituritMborgh to St. Louis was now, • in ,existerice,...
