Moi do not deem it necessary to priblish a full report of the sermon. The general idea of the sermonli einbodled in the opening paragraphs: Remy thing which comes within the range of human knowledge must present itself necessarily under ti twofold condition. One of these condi boos fa its substatom, the other its form. In ma ture-all the varieties of subjects of humaninves tigation have this twofold relation, and the same human mind that can investigate natural things, can also appreciate spiritual. And even in spir itual things this same distinction prevailed.— Religion' is no exception to the rule, and if there be a dldiculty at all, it is in this: that in the in vestigation of human topics, we relied on our se curacy•of observation, and thus inferred what substance In - religion, this is different, as we have as a ground of Our reliance the testimony of God as to what substance is, and his authority as to roan. Let no man pretend to investigate reli gion. and separate the two. , reveal the one and conceal - the other. God made religion, as he did all Other things, adapted to the nature of man as it Is; and while we have the authority of God ea to , the substance, so we have as to the form of religion: In the comes of the sermon the Bishop referred to:the building which preceded the present 'true tare...Though inthriorto this, it was a noble Mon - of the piety and living faith of the Chris tians of this Western capital of the State. Amen I , say to you; there bath not risen among them that are born of woman, a greater than John the Baptist:'yet he that is lesser in the kingdom of heaven is pester than he. We present below a report bt the Archbishop's remarks: ' -As this thank is dedicated on the Festival of Bt. John .the Baptist, the precursor of our• Lord, it is proper to address to you some words of edi fication ma to his cake and eharacter. This fes tival serves to unite the Jewish with tke Chris tirn church ; , ILL the =meeting link of the two testaments. The chart:hi:as a speck' Toners _ tion for his memory u well for his Tiz Mee as - • for the relathi' which he held to Christ ; and it is fitting that 'we should oonsider those traits of his 'elute:ter *doh are marked in the gospel, and learn from his life how precious to God is innocence of life, especially when joined to Arm nor and intrepidity. 131. John is worthy of ven eration for the high office to which be was cho sen. 'He was designated 'the angel of the Lord togs beforothe fees of Cbrist and prepare the people for his awning. He was imbued with ex traordinary graces and privileges. Even in the , womb of hismother, he became conscious of the ` presence of the Lord, for we are told that the babe leaped for joy, and that the mother was filled with the Holy Ghost, and exalted on ac count erthe high honor that had been contested upon heti. ' Thus the church oondders the Baptist as sanctified from that moment. Hu infancy, youth and manhood all correspond with the spe cial grace then bestowed on Wm. He did not reqnent the haunts of men nor mingle in society, exposed to all its dangers and temptations, but betook himself to aretkeff spot 14a :desert, where he might ludd Jethro:bine only with God and his. • enple. All •the people went in multitades to receive from his I lips the lessons of truth from God, and many were touched. with compunctions in their evil , hearts, and received at the bands of John the sacred rite of baptiser, which was employed ex ternally to-indicate th e washing sway of sin from the soul. Keay persons of the most desperate character—many who were hist to all sense of virtue, were reclaimed by his teachings, and not only pted baptism 'at Mel:ands but testified afterwards of their centredto God by the trolls of *thence which dlst inuLhed them. But in ordir tob conceive the greatness et the Baptist's character; we . must not only consider the lesson of sublime virtuesere inculmted, but we must see him placed in position in which the bold and open avowal of principles otmoral. ley draw down ofildfit the enmity and revenge of • powerful bet lielations woman, .• John felt called upon to retrain the ;wicked prince and said "it Is netlike:tut for thee to retajtothy broth er's wife." Ty - God on this day for the minion of the Baptist —for the glory bestowed on him--for the exam ple of sublime virtue exhibited In hie person; and finding our lives so different from his, that neither his Innocence nor his austerities dwell --in us, we should weep over our sine, and in the baptism of penance wipe them all away, and compensate for the evil of our put livee by the fervor and devotion of our future lives. We should not only take care of our morals before God, but should have a seal for the observance of virtue and the maintenance of truth in cir cumstances or difficulty and danger when the in tenets of truth call on us. Each individial should support the cause of vitiate and rebuke vice, but especially these who are charged with the care of others. Those who have charge over domestics, servants, and others, should, if they fall away from virtue, charitably instruct and ad monish them, and use all reasonable care and solicitude for their reformation, even when there is scarcely a hope of amendment Sin should be rebuked even though trouble and danger might follow. Such are the lessons taught by the life of John. Let us ever remember them and endeavor to entitle eittnelTee to the intones obi or the saints of God, by our solicitude to imitate their condition. It is not for the mere purpose, of panegyric: that their names are placed before us, but by the remembrance of the crowns of glory they now wear, to lead us to hope to stuare_their glories, or consent to be condemned with that corrupt one, whose example is in direct contra-dielinctioti to that of the saints. Let us then he laithful to preserve our calling _.—to study the divine maxims of our Redeemer, and when temptation p roses on me, let us ask the prayers of the sa is and the grace which supported them. The llaye of our trials will soon pass away, end if we lire's faithful to grace and obedient to the impulsee , ef thespirit of God, our lot will%) found with hie Uinta and we shall glorify him for an endless eternity.
