We frequently meet in our_ clasp gee with individual renunciations which hold up the order to the contempt and ,detestation of mankind, and now we have the renunciation of a Whole Council, No. 147, in Lyme, Counectieut. The Council was composed of siity-nine metn- bees, all of.litioia - ,*aita aie signed to the re nunt4tinit.;..,The proximate cause of this action tie remeation of Its chatter by _the _fitate ' Coinsiß, which, lately met in 'Norwich, because the majority of the members of the Lyme Cowl _ -oil isetatiiiiiisreto g election, as they nay, "in accordance with the dictates of their own con sniefrias."' The Council met and passed among - others , the following resolutions : Rooked, That in our opinion. the time has arrived for the alarm to be sounded in the ears of the people - of Connecticut, and to infOrm them of the existence of a secret order in their midst which la striking a blow in the dark against-our institutions of civil 'and religious liberty, and which, if suffered to go on, will soon•destroy all we prise most , dear in religion, politics end mor als. Sisolord, That we feel that we • shoal prove false to oar obligations to God and our country, if we were to keep silent at such a time as this,, and that we', busby set forth to the people the following expordtkei of the Order and the objec tions which arise in our minds to the principles of its organized= and action. We b; no room for the whole of this expo either, can only take one or two extraci,ii:— The expraktion charges' upon the Order a "mani fest determination to crush out both freedom of speech and illation on the part of its members to utterly 'disregard its assursindes and oblige; tithe, professedly made in good faith, whenever • it shall best suit its secret, dark and unhallowed purposes, end henceforth to regard no other law than that of passionate impulse and arbitrary proscription, 'which has ever been the last re sort of those powers only that have attempted to shield the moet gigantic wrongs suubir the danger ous plea of noesesity and absolute authority." The following ; description of some of the evils of the Order is nervously deism: "It has enticed the people from their homes In the still hours .of. (Whims, and at its numerous places of meeting bound them to its foul - end S fearful punoses by administering the most nor ' rid oaths, with one hand resting on the Bible, and the other raised to Heaven, .to yield them selves unreservedly to the control of this secret power; and even to deny to their families and the world that they hold connection with the Order:.! No person is permitted to hold an opin ion which has not the sanction of the self-conerti tuted-thouth-pieces of the party. Within this temple of superstition Sir Oracle reigns enplane. The devotee whoworships at its shrine is coni pletely unmanned. He no longer feels nor sots his former salt In secret he sushi my like a athspirator_ to thsplsoe - where the most inveter ate hatred is engendered against the descen dants and countrymen of those-brave men whose heroic valor assisted in achieving the liberties which we now enjoy... In the same manner, and often at the hour of midnight,.he gropes his way back to his family• -- egaus to repeat the hundred times told lie of no connection with this Order. So math fidsthood in the family circle, where the unithat confidence, truthfulness and harmony should exist, has a direct tendency to produce suspicion and mistrust on the part of waves and Withers towards their husbands and anis; hence we find in every town where a council exists, the female portion of the community are speak ing out boldly theirmoral indignation against an Order whose Influence is so salthilestly baneful • upon all who are connected' with it, whether nearly or remotely. • Re who does not here behold the awe work ing of demoralization and ruin, must indeed be • poor moralist. , But all these are evils of small magnitude and consideration when compared with some other gigantic wrongs with which it labors to Gorse • our land. The scattering of as few pieces of red paper of a peculiar shape obliges every 'brother' to arm himself with a bowie-knife and revolver, or other deadly :weapon, and follow the heck of their leader; even to the shedding of blood.— The Cincinnati, Louisville, St Louis and other fearful bloody Know-Nothing riots are but the legitimate workings of the Order, and but the beginning of inch thanes as were emoted on the sPrance under Red Republican rule. Thoth 'who'oontrol and manage the affairs of this corrupt concern are in it. for the spoils of office! and - no means however dowels are left untried to compass this end." The above will suffice for the paisent. We have no doubt the exposition is true and candid. It bears the impress of tenth on its face, for nex actly-, nosh evils would naturally result from just. such au organisation as this Is kricsm to be. We cannot, for our-part, conceive, how any upright, handrails sad. Independent American citizen could ec bluely` compromise his citizen ship and his manhood'by consenting, under the, solemn eanottOna of an oath, 'to become the tool of an irresponsible elan of polithal demagogues who worm themselves into the plates of chief in , • fian th ce in e Order and directly or indirectly manses all its affairs. No man his the right to sacrifice his political liberty in this way, for he can never lmnir beforehand whether he as con- ssiontiondy atipport the principles or osndldatet the majority orthe'Order may present. Esp.- ).nially we cannot see. how any Christian man, and, above all, how any Christian Minister can• Of disgrace lds sacred °Moe, and sully Ids high tommisdon from Heaven, by entering into the midnight councila and mummeries of this band of political plraters. The day will sorely come when such connection will be looked upon by f Chi community as aninelfsorable stain upon the !character of all such protessedly.Ambassadßrs of Christ. Texccenv.—We dated the other day that the Harrisburg Tdegniph, which - is the Governor's :9)outhpleoe, had published the majority K. N. platform vrithout a word of dissent. .We are told in another quarter that the Hanlaburg iiferefel, which is the daily of the Telegraph, approVem of lithe position of the minority of the committee on ireeoluthros, and believes it will be endorsed by • jyast majority of the American party of this Com ; monweelth. It matters nothing what was in thi Nava If what it said wm left out of the Tato- Oath. Bat even the greakf, with this trifling condemnation upon its tongue, is prepared to laulaat to the platform, for st least a year. It suggests that the platform is not a '9lnality, , and that the National Council in February next, iehich Wu be constructed upon the COWMAN'. at basis, will have an opportunity to reviqfand modify it• The State Council must therefore. retain its confliction with the National Cosinell, •L trusting tallithim the - nut meeting to get the platforet ithistilid. This trick Ls not half so shrewd as IGiieems The Philadelikla Son reveals to us another trick of the mime order. It ram "We me clearly of opinion with the N. Y. At least their influence is uniMpaired if they choose to heed about on sober sexed thought, I as many of them yunlolibtedly will. But If New i England were to 'bolt Americanism, the middle end Southern Stites, with New. York and Penn sylvana, have ample power to win the battle in 18662 The plain English of this is that Gen. Wilson and hie colleagues opposed the majority platform merely to maintain their standing at home, in tending, all the while, to remain with the Na tional Council and labor for the platform which theyhadprofeuedly (!) relate!. We need hardly tell the Sun that such dupliolty would provoke a thousand times more Indignation and contempt than the platform itself. The Sun, however, con soles itself with the reflection that even if this pretty piece of rascality should be avoided, and New Englatk bolt, Pennsylvania is sure to go with the Saab. A third in this series of tricks is found in the proceedings °Like ratification meeting held at Barton, Northampton county, on the 21st. This meeting is descnibed in the Philadelphia papers as "immense," "very great," and "attended with the highest enthasiasm." E. Joy Morris, Mayor Conrad and other Philadelphians were there to address the crcwd, and the following, among other resolutioni; wore adopted: WHAILEAS The National bounca of the Amer ican party has issued a Platform of principles which is comprebeneive of all the great princi ples of the day, and ispecifto in Its utterance upon topics which agitate the mind of the country, and Wariass, It commends itself by its frank avowal of the leading 'designs of the party and its fearless nationality of sentiment Therefore„ Misolved, That we will and do hereby endorse it and acknowledge it as. our present political creed, and that by it we will stand and battle for the great interests of the country and the cause of political liberty, in opposition to all tyranny, whether civil or ecclesiastical. Resolved, nit we deprecate in the most sol emn and emphatio terms the repeal of the Mis souri Compromise Act of 1820, as a breach of • sacred compact between the North and the South, whit* for thirty-four years was a bond of na tional peace and tranquility. That uis the sense of this meeting that the 124 Seam of the Platform does not endorse the Missouri outrage, as has been alleged by • portion of the press, but refers the. whole subject of slavery to the proper legislation of the country, through the Individual responsi bility of the representatives of the people, and , therefore does not commit the party to any spe cific action. Here the platform is endorsed, as a whole ;' but we are coolly treated to the assurance that the 12th section does not endorse the "Mu:owl outrage." What Is here meant by the "Missou ri outrage" t If it is intended to say that the platform does not endorse the border ruffianism of Missouri outlive since thel passage of the Sumas bill, then it is a mere play upon words; too petty and trifling to merit serious notice ; but if it is designed to convey the idea that the 12th plank of the platform does not endorse the repeal of the Missouri Compromise—and that is the-logical sequence from what precedes—then it a bold attempt to mislead the north by a new and fanciful interpretation. Happily, 'Ma ple in this part of the world cannot be deceived by a constipation of pliin language which does so much violence to common sense ; but there doubtless are seetiems where such trumpery may • pees for gospeL Are have thus traced three tricks of our K. N. politicians which it will be well to watch. The first, is, to seem to bolt from the National Order, for the cake of appeasing public sentiment, while really maintaining the connection intact: this Is simply ecoundrelism- The second, is, to protest against the platform, but stay in the Or der until next year, indulging the faith of Member that something will then tarn up.— The third is, to give a forced interpretation to the platform, and make the people believe, if pos sible, that It is not what Its language betrays it to be. All of these plans have Ike same object in view, to wit keeping the Pennsylvania State Council in harmonious co-operation with the iNatonal Council. There is to be no real repu tion of the platform by the State Council, judging from these manifestations. Either the plan of the Phitedeldbia Sun will be advocated, SO -UM to bolt while really doing otherwise; or that of the Harrisburg Herald, to protess:beit hold on tiniest year; or that of the Eaeton men, to give the platform an interpretation that will make it go down. These are the schemes which the leaders seem to be cherishing. In either event the public is to be deceived and the cred ulous misled. It may be well, however, for these leaders to remember that there are other men in the State as smart as themselves, and that they will have to be exceedingly clever if they suc ceed altogether in concealing the cloven foot.
