Wo have too many consumers end tea few producers. • There is too strong a tendency, of young . men especially, to cities and towns, landl pursuits other than agriculture. Id the feverish excitements attendant upon our rapid progress as a nation many hose been tempted to abandon the plow to find in numberless specula tions—fn pablio employments, in trading, in merchaudising, in gold-digging, in railroading, and, what not—au easier or quicker road to riches. than the old-fashiened one of agriculture. We felt this severely in,1837, and more than once itince'lB46 has the experience recurred to us. In the latter year the Mexican war..oicurred and drew off many persons from agricultural employ ments., This was followed by the gold digging - fever, "brill has not yet subsided; but which still prevails to an extent that discourages regu lar and lennest lahor, by turning industry into • speculative channels. Following the gold fever Was the railroad mania, which, together with the impulse given to ship building, and to personal employments found in cities and towns, caused . the fields and meadows to be deserted, while po tatoes were two dollars a bus.hel, and hay thirty dollars afon. Relief from Slate of things is not to be found, as is supposed by some, in the simple in crease of the quantity of land for tillage, because under our modes of tillage, increasing the bfeadth of the laid that we put under cultivation but les sens the amount of product, unless we propor tionally increase the labor employed. In fine, this must become more of an sgricul tural country than it now is before the supplies of breadstuff, end other provisions will equal the demand for home consumption. DELINCATOB..—Mis is the title of anew work, intended as an utter ring'means of detecting spurious and altered notes. A complete list is given of the plates of all denominations now used by each bank in the United States, with a description of the engra vings thereon and their proper place onithe note. A list is also given of the old plates of which notes are now in circulation. By comparing any bank note with the description and delineations here given, it can be seen at a glance whether it is spuritias, altered or genuine. If the note corresponds with the description given it must be either genuine or au imitation; and if the latter, the ordinary counterfeit detectors will point it , out. One great danger now felt from bad money arises frost notes printed on genuine Plates and altered in denomination or title. The possession of this work is equivalent to the, pos iession of genuine bills on all the banks in the Union, enabling any one to compare the false with the true. - The following certificate from Auditor Donn of Indiana, is very emphatic testimony to the value of the work. Forms TEountss.—The N. .1: Tribune, in an article on the Kansas mischief. thus speculates on the probabilities of the future: But the mischief that is brewing, i.e not alone in Kansas. There are deep-laid plots of treason to freedom consummating in Wimhiegtou. The arch disunionist, Jefferson Davis, who signalised his career in the Senate of the United States by advocating an overthrow of the Government in case all of our California acquisition -below BCP-30 , was not surrendered to Slavery by special stipulation, aspires to the pest of Commander-in Chief of the Army. lie is Mr. Pierce'a Secreta ry of• War, and a leading man In the Cabinet, Should he achieve his object, all that we knowof his antecedents leads us to believe that he would not hesitate to Use his influence to spread Slave ry into the West and North at the point of the bayonet, sod if attempts mere made to relist it in any effective manner, be would exert all his poster to subvert the Government. The Free States are surrounded by plots and toils and com plications, in respect to the subjugation of this Government by the slaveholders, of which the people little dream. Next week 'Col. Kinney's expedition to Central America will sail, in a steam er procured for the purpose, with every arrange ment to overrun and subdue the feeble republics of Eloodarss, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. When conquered, their conversion into Slave States will be 'eon accomplished. Mere threatening } even than this. the President has ordered a fleet I to the Gulf of .Nlexigre, to bring on a war with Spain-for .the possession of Cuba. We are ap i preaching the crisis which will decide whether Slavery_ or Freedom is to mould the destinies of America. . The Slave power is determined to control the Union and to possess a majority of the States. They aim not at the CCODOMiC4I or industrial ad vancement of the nation. They do not even de sire the eprend of slavery &cause of the worth of the institution in their own eyes. Oa the contrary, it is felt and known to be the great blight and curse upon the national prosperity; but their purpose in spreading it is to secure guards and outposts for the main citadel of sla very in the South. The slavelsoiders are deter mined to cripple and circumscribe the growth of the Free States. Their action Is based upon de liberate views of what they have brought them selves to I elieve is the necessity of their situa tion. They are well fortified at present, or base been by Northern dongbfaces. They' lean open Pennsylvania and Illinois, and other Free States, as faithful allies. Nut they do not kdow how soon the fires of Northern independence may burn out the roots of their power, and they aim to be secure against the time wben that shall happen. Their designs ore far reaching and their - plots deep. Meanwhile the North—the money-making, buoy, outraged North—secure in its own tranquility and prosperity, after one spasmodic act of condemnation for the atrocity of the Nebranka bill, gives symptoms of relapsing into a were armed neutrality, or what is worse, of expending its zest, energy and virtuous indig nation in disputatious and quarrels. over the growth of one among fifty religious denomina tions, and the dangers of an increment, by immi gration from foreign States, of our free popula tion.
