'COIIDITB.Y lIONES FOE CITY RIISIRESS Before commencing the planting of trees, the ground should be thoroughly prepared. If the situation is dry, resting upon a porous sub-soil, such as sand and gravel, it should be completely 'broken, up with a sub-soil plough; but if of a :wet or compact nature, draining should be re sorted ta; Although the first expense of such a ,preParation of the ground is considerable, yet it will apply repay for the outlay in the enjoyment . and thriftiness of the after culture. The urinal - -coarse has been to dig small holes - here and there, and to cram a tree or shrub in, without : any regard to its nature and requirements, and - -then there has beep a long series of disappoint: :meats and losses, and a final discouragement, 'resulting either in giving up the experiment al together, ,or in miserable, dilapidated looking grounds. A tree is a living thing, and must be treated aa such. if we expect satisfactory results _'to - crown our.. efforts in its cultivation. A thee , .oUgh . preparation 'of the ground at the start is indlipensable to the production of a handsome -Jain. studded with thrifty trees. Fruits, flow - • era and a_kitchen garden all require the same treatment. If well rotted manure can be ob. tahted, -it' shorild be scattered broadcast, aria -1 ploughed in, but manure should never be placed ;in a hole in contact with the roots of a young tree. As trees :advance, a top dressing may be resorted to with good effects, and mulching with ' comae manure, straw, saw-dust or dead Leaves is always beneficial, and indiiPensable in dry seasons- In planting a lawn of two or three acres, with ornamental trees and shrubs a choice should be made of quick growing trees, and those which experience shows are perfectly hardy. A few exotics may be introduced to give variety, but - should not be depended upon for the . staridaids,- tuid for shade. Oar own native Maple, Elm,' - Toiler, Ash, Beech, Walnut, Linden, Chestnut, ; in their numerous varieties, leave nsnothieg to desire in the way of noble lawn trees; but va rious European and Asiatic trees may be intro duced with goOd effect. Among these the Allan thus ShOuld not be discarded, although it has beenseverely denounced by some persons of taste andjriagment: We know of no tree which pro- duces finer effects when judiciously introduced. A large park of native oaks, interspersed with , Walnuts and - Hickories, produces grand effects, bait these take a long lifetime to grow, and would be ont of place in grounds of the size we are con sidering. Where a few of these native monarchs of the forest can be secured growing on the ground,' especially oaks and chestnuts, a great , point is gained, and they cannot be too highly prised, but we would recommend no man to at tempt to make' a. plantation of this' description if he expects to enjoy it, neither would a small lawn of blew acres be in good taste if planted with only two or three varieties of trees. What . is wanted for an attractive and tasteful country home, is a mingling of nature and art. One of our grand native forests creates emotions of awe anti sublimity; but a hOuse set in the midst of such a forest wield inspire no emotions of pleasure, butt the contrary. The hand of man must be seen about a home to make it lovely and attractive. As the lover of art gathers into his horde specimens of the genius and skill of all nations, so the lover of nature should gather in to his grounds as many specimens ef trees, shrubs and flowers as it will hold, giving the pe dominance as to majority to the most beautiful end approved of native origin. The variety in thi color of the foliage of trees is almost endless, and when the leaves of the trees of a well planted lawn ere moved by the -wind, ' the most pleasing effects are produced.— Evergreens should be liberally introduced, as, beside their natural beauty, they testify at once to the presence of the hand of art and taste. If arty - are so fortunate as to have a small grove of native forest trees, growing in their natural state, .they will have to be very cautions in dealing with it. Our native forest trees grow - so thick, that trees shoot up to a great height with but a branching tuft at the top. These can never be made into ornamental trees, and if the grove is much thinned out they will either blow down or die. A tree when grown in an open . space, throve out limbs low down the trunk, and forms a beautiful and most picturesque ob ject: It is prepared to stand . the, fierce winds and the scorching sun. Bat a tree grown np in • • the shelter of- a forest. is not prepared for these exigencies, and when deprived 'of its accustomed shefter it exhibits a blighted &area - or perishes. The best plan to treat such a grove is gradu ally to thin outionly what is unsightly and de mini. 'and by planting clumps of evergreen shrubs, which love the shade, such ss Rhododen drone and some others, and sowing it to grass, _ a very pretty and cool lawn can be made. We would not fancy such a grove around a dwelling, : as it would prevent much ornamental gerdirdem but one contiguous is a pleasing object in itself, I ,and reminds the occupant of those ancient for esta which were the home of the Red Man when this glorious country was all his own. , We would by all means sdyise persons about to improve grounds, to make their purchases from reliable nursery men. Many - 'lemons, ' save expense, resort to tlits, weeds for native shade trees, and the result is, that in nine cases • !out of ten they lose their labor, or have a mitt- • arable, stunted tree. This neighborhood is now well snpplied, with ornamental trees, deciduous 'and evergreen; and with all descriptions of fruit ' There are few nurseries in the country - superior to that of Messrs. Wm. & Uses Men , noca, of Hedge Farm, situated about three miles from the city, on Wilkins Ave ne. Their collec tion of superior evergreens is unrivalled, for the varieties suitable for This climate; and the beau _ ty of their trees, and the fine state. in which they reach :punhasers. Mr. John Murdoch, Of the , Pittsburgh and Oakland nursery, has also a very fine stock, particularly of fruits, shrubbery and - greenhouse plants, as well as evergreens. Es- I et 7 description of trees can also be supplied by Mr, E. R. Shankhind, 129 Wool street, or Mr. Jag. Wardrop, Fifth street, who have erratm i Merits to furnish trees from the best nurseries at home or abroad. All these persons are reliable, and purchasers can depend on receiving the er r tide they order. We are decided in the opinion, that the cheapest way-to procure a good tree Is to order it from a reliable nurseryman. We have now said all we design at present on ' this subject. President'a frequent conferences with his War and Navy Ministers.— A "speck of war" is visible to the naked eye, add may show Itself in a thunder cloud, after the San Jacinto shall have had time; with her new machinery, to get within' hail of a Spanish ship of-war. Tho.Preskient, it is believed, takes upon 'him self the responsibility of the orders ' whatever they may be, that hays been given to captain Ill'Cauley. Be is probably ordered to blow ont of water the Spanish cruisers and their British consorts, also, in resentment of the Spanish as sumption of a right to hail our vessels and ask for their papers, and inquire whether they are on a piratical or commercial errand. This Span ish pretension and practice is assumed to be equivalent to toe exercise of a right of search, which, as advocates of the freedom of the seas, we do not concede to any power, upon any ire tents whatever. The intelligence expected by the government from Havana, via Charleston, probably relates to the exercise by the Spanish authorities of this right of search, or rather of visiting and de taining our vessels. The 'United States consul has, of coarse, bad a conference with the au thorities on that subject, and the result has been communicated to our government. The deter mination of the Spanish government to persist in this practice is, therefore; known, and the is sue on paper is already made. It remains only to bring the question to the test of force. Some appear to think that the sinking, by Capt. _McCauley, of a few Spanish vessels of war, with his big Paixhan'e, will not Invite war as a consequence. It will; nevertheless, be now, whether more or less vigorously carried on. It will depend upon Congress, whether it be carri ed on with .the whole power of the country or not, and they will probably say not. The expectation of intelligence from the des tined war station of the actual destruction already, by any of our ships of the offending Spanish guards di costa, will be disappointed. The or ders leading to each an event have been but just limed, and are in Commodore IffoCauley'a pocket. lint he will not fail very soon to ftufil public ex pectations and the wishes of the government on the subject. . Tropositionrare said to be making for, equip ping from the Gulf service the-largest fleet that we ever sent to sea. George Sanders thinks the President wall soon lose . the prospect of taking Cuba, by the prelimi nary warning which Capt. McCauley's .rattlers will give of ,thc intended attack- We shall soon have stirring news from the Gall'. Tax Naw Idessaa Law.—The question of the operation of the new license law upon licenses already granted, has . already been raised. The Philadelphia Ledger-is of opinion Out no liquor 'lead be sold after the Si et of October next, ex cept under the provisions of the new law. The law says that the act shall not interfere with li censea granted before its passage, until the time for which they have. been granted • shall ; expire; nor shall ariy.licenae granted before the first' of July next authorise any sale after.the Ist of Oc tither. The Lager retuarki: The latter section of this act is differently construed, and many persons, supposing that if they anticipated the time, and , procured .their licenses now, they would "h sell "-have the right to until the year should expire for, which licenses are granted, had theirs renewed la fey( days ago, before the law was passed. These persons. are evidently mistaken in the operations of the law. No liquor can be sold by less than the quartafter the first day of next October. The licenses in this State are granted at two different periods, the first of May and the first of September. The act just passed covers those granted the first of last September, till they expire. Those granted for the period of a year from the first of May next, are not among the licenses referred to as "heretofore" granted, for though they may hare been taken out in advance of the time, they are only legally recognizable from the first of May next, a period subsequent to the enactment of the law. It is not the policy of the law to encour age evasions of a statute, mad the licenses taken out for a period subsequent to the passage o! the law will, we infer, not- be allowed a longer existence than the first of October. " A DSXOOILATIC Ormiox.—The Harrisburgh Union, which is the Pennsylvania State organ of . the Democratic party, gives vent to its feelings on the Ka11303 election in the following terms: • ...From the accounts which have reached as of the late election for member? of the territorial Assembly, we learn two important facts; let, that the pro-slavery party have succeeded in ev ery district by large Majorities; 2d, that the Atchison scheme of temporary colonization from Missouri, which we, at first, considered too mon strolls for belief, was effectually carried into operation, thus giviikg the control of the election non-residente r thousands of. whom !Aye since returned to their homes in Sfissouri. When we characterize this as an infamous outrage, we use the mildest terms we can think of to convey otir meaning. We supported the Nebraska-Kansas bill on principle, and we still believe the princi ple to be correct; hist, in the names of justice and freedom we solemnly protest against the con duct of the Slissour ruffians, and upon the properauthoritiee of Kansas to repudiate the election as illegal and fraudulent. If the actual residents of Kansas, with all the blighting influ ences. of slavery before their eyes, desire to plant that institution in treir fair territory, we shall submit, because the voice of the majority, fairly expressed, should and mast 'govern in this coun try; but god forbid that either the North or the South should stand by and see it. planted there by force and fraud without raising their voice,. and if need be their arms, against the consum mation of so gross and lawless an outrage." It is stated-in the New. York papers that the Mansfield and Sandusky road has been or is soon to be surrendered to the Trustees in behalf of the First Mortgage Bond holders. The first mort gage RIO, we believe, for $700,090. The road Is said to yields net income of $200,000. The second Mortgage Bond holders are disposed to make a little foss over the nistter, under the im pression that the surrender is labnirsl to their interests.
