ERANOIPATION ILLUSTRATED DT NORTHERN Lews.—There is a case pending in the Georgia Courts, which involves the freedom of over a hun dred slaves. General Bledsoe of Eatonton (Ga.) to whom they belonged, drew up a will before his death, manumitting them. To secure their freedom effectually, end to provide for their sub sistence, he added a provision that they should be settled on lands in Indiana or Illinois, and furnished with means of support fora year. For this purpose he set apart ample funds. Open his death, accordingly, the executors commenced to carry out the trust. Bat when they came. to Indiana to buy the land, they were met by this provision of her State Constitu tion : Art. XIII. See. 1. No negro or mulatto glll eomo into or settle In this State after the adop tion of thie Constitution. Sec IL All contracts made with any negro or mullatto coming into this State shall be void; and any person whp shall encourage each negro or mullatto to remain in thefitate shall be Sued not more then $6OO. • Tho Executors then tried Illinois. But here they were told that the_Law passed a few years since by the Legislature that sent Stephen A- Douglass to Washington, made It a criminal of fence for any free colored persan to lira within her borders. Up- start now the nephews and nieces and heirs at law, claiming that since the Will cannot be carried out, this rich imberitance of black Seal; and red blood, belongs to them. For this, the South is not responsible. The owner endeavored to do his duty by his slaves and the Georgia Courts have faithfully aided him to the extent of their power; The Free Northern States of Indiana and Illinois—who owe all that they are, and all that they hope to be, to the wise Ordinance which abolished involuntary ser- vltude within their boundaries,--these two Free northern States, remand a hundred emancipated men and women, back Into Slavery !--.48. A large public meeting In favor of African colonization is to be hell in this city, at all early day, under the auspices of the Pemnsylvanla Colonization Society. The New York Society has received a legacy of three thousand dollars bequoathe to it by the late Rus sel 11. Nevins, a welt known and highly esteemed citizen of. New York. The Virginia Society has eines its commericement sent to Liberia three thousand and ninety three emigrants, of whom 273 went In the year 1854, and 241 in 1853. These were the largest numbers since the begin ning except that of theyear 1831, which was 292. The colored population of Philadelphia numbers at present 30,000 persons, possessing an aggregate of $2,688,693 in real and person al estate. During the last year they paid $9,- 766 42 for taxes, and $396,782 for house, water and ground rents. Such a population in Libe ria would jest now be of 1111111/MINe service to that republic. Aunts & Co. ix Davie:l.—The news of the failure of Adams & Co. was expressed to Oregon by land, by parties Interested. The news arri ved there several days before the steamer arri ved from this port. The parties who forwarded the news secured themselves limiest loss. The Columbia, when she went up, carrthd a notification of the failure of Adams & Co., end an order issued by the Judge of the Fourth Ju dicial District, directing Dr. Steinbnrger to hold the assets of Adams d Co., subject to the further order of A. A. Cohen, Receiver. Dr. Stoinbur gee was also appointed by Mr. A. A. Cohen Dep uty Receiver for Oregon. Dr. Steinberger, how ever, deeming the Waimea the creditors of the house in Oregon of paramount importance, thought beat to disregard the order of the Court here, and made as assignment of the assets of the house in Oregon for the benefit of the Oregon creditors. Mr. D. F.. Goodwin, who has been to the employ of the house for some time, was ap pointed by Judge Williams, of the U. S. District Court, Receiver. Subsequently a meeting of the creditors was called, and o. statement submitted relative to the affairs of the house. It appeared that a sufficient amount of coin was on band to pay all depositors, to within less than $4,000. Ample security was also presented for the amount Depositors were therefore paid until the coin on hand was exhausted, and the Arnaud remitting due was secured In a manner entirely satisfactory to them. The conduct of Dr. Stainberger will receive the .approbation of all who love justice. It is not to be wondered that the course that he took was universally approved itt` Oregon. There is little doubt that be will be sustained in this city, even by the credithrs of Adams & Co.—Placer Time:, (Cat) SCIIAXYL, the Circassian Chief, has had C gored to him his son, who was taken captive by the Bossism about eleven years ago, when he was but a child. From the time he w as , cap- ! tared Schamyl had not heard from him, and had given him up for lost. It apptars, however, im mediately on the capture the Russian Gettetal, Prince Woronzoff, sent the boy to St. Petersburg, where the late emperor took a liking to him, sod had him educated in the Military Academy. It happened last year that Schamyl, in some mid den surprise, took several Russian ladies prison ers, timungst.whom was the Princess Timbers waddy. They were conducted to due of Soho myPs mountain fastnesses, and confined there as prisoners of war, but treated to the respect and decorum_ due to thelrrank and sex. The Gov ernor-General of Tiflis sent a flag of truce to Schamyl to demand the release Of the captured ladies, offering a large turn of money and the liberty Of several Circassian ladies who had been made prisoners by the Russians. But Schamyl replied, that If his son was alive, and the Rus sians would restore him, he would release all the. lady captives. The Emperor Nicholas sent for young Schamyl, gave him his liberty, and fit ted him out with the needful equipment to under take-the longjoarney. The exchange took place In the end of January. Young Schamyl, who, when at Bt. Petersburg, was not required to ab jure the Moslem creed, has profited by his invol untary sciour at . the Russian capital, and has now returned to, hie-overjoyed father, with a complete military education. :Matt !curs.—The Chicago Denoerat says rent, in that city are enormous, and beyond all mean. This elevation was at first called "Mount Ziou;" but, in conso qnenee of the publication of some doggrels, said to blob been written by a Welsh parson, to com memorate the, opening of a tavern that had.been erected upon its completion, the name was changed to its presentaitle. To the booth in which this proceeding took place the admission was 6d. per head.— Large fires were made on different parts of the ice, round which the disorderly of both sexes con gregated. Skittles, running races, dancing and other such like matters were practical, while all sorts of Shows were in many parts exhibited.— On the 6thof February, Kingston Bridge, inSur rey, was completely destroyed. It was a strut ture of great anti suity. The poor greatly suffered. This year subscriptions were raised in their be half throughout the kingdom. The frost lasted thirty-two days. the London mail was delayed three dept . .= the road. A SAD FATE.—The following, from the New York Courier and Enquirer, illustrates the un certainty of human calculations: "On the first of January, 18.54, a gentleman doing business in this city, was worth with what he had invested in business, one hundred and ten thousand dollars. At the same time he was blessed with a lovely and intelligent wife, beau tiful and promising children. Ile was surround ed by friends who esteemed and respected hint. His business was lucrative, and promising to continue so. Indeed, his position as well as his prospects were, seemingly, altthat he could de sire, to render his happiness perfect. Howcom plate the wreck which the year closed upool— The first misfortune was the transfer Of mer chandise to the amount of eighteen thon_vend dollars to a California dealer, for Which not one cent sneerer recei vol. The next were two suc cessive robberies, by means of which twenty-bee thousand dollars were lost. Soon after this, the unfortunate made an investmentin real estate to a large amount. The next and mewl:dui tag fortune was a trip with his family to Europe.— They embarked, on their return, with thirty eight thousand doil•ars is goods. on board the steamship Arctic, and all shared her luckless fate. In settling up his affairs, his real estate Ras sold under the hammer at a sacrifice of forty thousand dollars, making she aggregate loss of of his property during the year, ono hundred and eighteen thousand dollars, eight thousand ' dollars more than his assets. His friends were. obliged to make good the deficiency! Was ever destruction more complete? Father, mother, children and fortune, all gone—swept from the face of the earth—nothing left to show that they ever existed!. We doubt whether among the many wrecks which the past year has wit nessed, there has been among them one more melancholy than this." Tun EAILTINITAKE AT 116011811 A.—Moat dis tressing details bare been received of the dread ful earthquake that destroyed one-third of the flourishing city of Broassa on the 28th ult. The panic caused by the destruction of the stone buildings is indescribable. The population of Brous= rashedont Into the fields terror-stricken. The wounded were dug out of the ruins as rap idly as possible, and conveyed to temporary hos pitals. The first day 600 wounded persona were recovered. It was under the Khans bathe, and mosques, which ate all of stone, that the most serious casualties occurred. The silk spinning factories, beionging to Europeans and natives, have more or less Imffered. In Mr. Dterairli's establishment upwards of 70 poor young girls were killed. Broussa is celebrated for its thermal springs, and it is a most extraordinary phenemenon that two of the springs have disappeared, 'whilst that called Caplicha was turned out of its bed, and the water now runs In the opposite direction.— During the earthquake a large rock was observ ed to detach itself from Olympus, and roll down like a tremendous avalanche, cerrying In - Its de scent trees, bushes and stones, until it arrived at the bottom of the ravine on - th e other bide of the city. The number of killed are sot down at 500, with twice as many wounded, and 250 mosques have been destroyed. • A great sensation has been produced in Paris by some revelations touching the famous Coup d'Etat:—ln the 0 1qm:wires d'un Bourgeois de Paris," written some time since by Dr. Vernon,it was asserted that a meeting took place in 1849 at the residence of hi. The Prase denied, upon the au thority of M. Thiers, the truth of that statement. Dr. Vernon rejoined, through the same journal, by reaffirming the fart in all its particulars, as previously published in the work before named. This brought forth a letter from M.
