You total -grant his prem..- es before you can refute his conclusion. The leading idea of the learned and reverend Professor, 'thinly spread over four columns of the first part of his essay, is, that our position a nation is owing to the Chrf"tian principles incorporated with our national character and policy. 'Be announces and dilates upon this as though it were a discovery. though we doubt whether there is a Christian minister in the I,ind who has not over and over again enforced the same truth. lie also enforces leas if it were a'matter of controversy, which we are happy to believe it is not. What these Christian princi ples are, he proceeds to ,111/w as follows: "Whence came the idea which has grown up into so new a political system? Where did the doctrine of the painted etfoolity of all men origi nate? It was not the result of philosophical in vestigations, though the thinkers of the world may have explained and enforced the truth when once known and published. But the idea wan first embodied in the teachings of Christ, when lie directed utl his disciples, rich and poor, wise and ignorant, to look. epic one common parent and nay, not my Father, but our Father." The Professor goes on, at great length, to say, that this idea of the political equality of all men, ns . tanght by Christ, wtss first embodied in the government of the United States; and thnt the election held by the; Apostles, recorded in the New Testament, where " the whole multitude" chose Stephen, Sc.. was but the expression of "the adoption of brotherhood, in view of a com- mon relation to the God of Heaven." It may perhaps gratify our Profmosr to know that this doctrine was fully recognized by the Signers of the Declaration of American Inde pendence. They, however, arc content to assert the truth of the equality of men no NV cm. dent," and therefore requiring no argument.- "And now what is the conclnsion- - the necessa ry deduction—which the Professor draws front, all this sound logic, and liberal, constitutional, Christian, aml truly American doctrine—all or which we most devoutly believe it is. :Why, cries this Christian Professor, “Knorr Nothing• !mi."' This may seem incredible, lint it is even so. This secret, political order, he proclaims as the "broad aegis of Americanisni"—"the bul wark for freedom:" Oh, most lame and impotent, illogical, incon- seynent, and pitiable conclusion! Coming so near to gether in principle it is not surprising that the worthies should find little difficulty in forming on alliance offensive and defensive; the main etipulation being, that one shall have fnllliber ty to extend slavery wherever he can witboni hindrance; while the other shall be allowed and encouraged to proscribe nil who diffor from him_ in place of birth. IMMACULATE Coscerrios or nen Monr Btassen Laos."—The N. V. Freeman's Jour nal (Tiernan Catholic) of Jan. 4th, contains a mestextrayagant, not to say ridiculous and blas phemous article, on the recent announcement from Rome, of the immaculate conception of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Mere it is in part: "The Immaculate Conception of our MoJt Blessed Lady."—The glorious news has reached no that on the Nth of December Popo Pius IX., of , im mortal renown, in presence of the Cardinals and Princes of the Church, declared it an article of divine faith, that the Mother of God, our Mutt Blessed Lady, 1•25 conceived without original stain. He that bath ears to hear, let him hear ! Ile that is athirst, let him leave off waiting beside dry and broken cisterns, and make haste to this City of God, which is made glad by the torrent of a river dewing from the living fountain of waters. The doctrine which is now'promulgsled as an article of faith, and which henceforth it will be heresy not to receive, bas long since been believ ed by all plows Catholics. But this dogmatic definition of its truth and character is a raver beyond. It has given joy to the whole • world, and is it too much if we expect frouLit the pacifi potion of the nations, and a general prostration of heretical - and persecuting forces lltis a year of sorrows that has preceded its announcement. Pestilence has stalked abroad over the earth.— Cruel, bloody and causeless war has carried mourning into tens of thousands of Christian homes. Famine has been standing at the door, and a general distress, not altogether accounta ble as to its source, has disarranged the business and the worldly wealth of multitude's. The Church, too, and her members have been per secuted. In the midst of these chastisements, we must nay it, men have not returned in their hearts towards God. They 'have forgotten his band, and have vainly sought remedies in natu ral ways. The very depths of human misery and anguish have pleaded before the throne! of God for a more powerful intercession; and the holy Ghost, the Comforter, has taught by bin Church truths that the -world in earlier ages was not able to bear." From this we learn, that to doubt the dogma that Mary was born wtthuut sin, is hereafter I. be guilty of bereny—andcousequently to deserve burning ; that this doctrine in to be regarded by the faithful an a "city of God," "a torrent of • river flowing from the living fountains of water;' that its promulgation hits gisenjoy to the who,. world ; and is espected to promote '•the pucifimt thin of the nations" and "the general prostratio of heretical and pecßecuting forces;" and the sorrows, pestilence, war, famine, general die tress, the derangeutent of business, and the per secution of the Roniieh Church are all to be check ed by the promulgation and belief of the doctrin that Mary the mother of Jesus, wan of i memo. late conception. To settle this all important point, we are toil that no less than '2OO bishops were gathered at Rome; that the discussion lasted 20 homo, and occupied four sittings, on four successiro days and that it was not until midday of the fourth sitting that the important decision was reached. A bishop who was present thus describes the crisis in the discussion: "This was the last lotting; midday sounded ; the entire assembly dropped uflou their knees to Inutile the Loyd.r. Then each resumes] his place and they had no sooner exchange,' a few words than an acclamation to the Holy father, a cry of eternal adhesion to the Holy See; to the See of Peter, arose, spread itself, bursting and issuing from erery heart; l'efre doer ; confirm: frat. Cr. Nos. And the instruction which, in the name of the Church, these pastors demanded of the Supreme Pastor, was the definition of the Itacono late Conception. And these words vibrated iu the souls with such ineffable virtue that it was as s cry of supplioation from the wholeimmembly; supplication en manifestly proceeding ftom the heart 2 and eo sublime, that to comprehend it, it lionhibe necessary to have heard it; neither pc n nor speech conagive nu adequate Idea of IL "O' Catholic church! they say thou art dead, and what abundance, what power of !
