Wait ita'• bat kee • a strict watch, meanwhile: a'We have been furnished with the "re marks of the Rev. W. Pasearant, of Pitts: burgh, in Pnovidenee Hall, Cainonsbag, on the occasion of , Presenting a service of plate to Prot H. Patterson, of Jefferson College," by the stu dents, and the response of the Professor. The addresses are long, and would fill several columns of our paper, and therefore, howqver mach dis posed we are to publish them, we are constrain ed to decline, for reasons which our readers will generally appreciate. The addresses are both of them beautiful and graceful, and the occasion was one highly grateful to the Professor and honorable to the etudenta; yet the interest is con fined to a limited circle, and we are daily warn ed that our precious space is all too small for mat ters of universe' and momentous interest-- Nothing would givews, personally, greater plea- BMW than to comply, with the request of the young gentlemen ofthe.College, but they should recollect that what is of paramount interest to them, is to the great mass of our readers but a pleasant episode in college life of vastly minor importance to the terriblewar raging in Eastern Europe, the proceedings of the American pews, and the thousand 'and one daily . events transpiring of general interest. Did the Rap port extended to a newspaper in this region ad mit of the publication of a larger sheet, and the expense incurred in placing a greater amount of matter in type, we would gladly devote a taw columns daily or weekly to just such purposes; but this pleasure is denied us,, and when we sit in judgment as an editor we' are compelled to regard not oor,own tastes and personal gratin- merely, but the requirements of that large mass of =lnd which looks up to us for infortna tiou and instractiOn. We ban a work to per form, equal in importance and more extended in influence, to thatof the clergyman who regu larly ministers to a congregation, and in perform ing this work we are unhappy while any informa tionwanting, any subject of general interest is undisn ts ussed, any evil unrebuked, any gdod cause unsupported. We. cannot please ourselves; we do not expect to please all our reidertnyei we covet the approbation of our own consedenee, and the satisfaction which flows from a *ease that we have done what we 'could to 'cultivate faithfully the living soil committed to our trust. We make these remarks now because we are almost daily pained at being obliged to reject what others, and sometimes dear friends, think ought to be published, and because we think an explanation and apology is due to ourselves as well as those who may consider themselves unkindly treated. Abate all things, we would impress 'upon the minds of correspondents, that allembjects not of general interest should be treated briefly. Very many communications are rejected solely on ac count of their length. This is the only reason whyria decline the , addresses above noticed.— We could have spared a column; but two or three at a time like this are not at our disposal for any subject not of interest to the great mass of our, people. • Nsartutca.—Ale following card, which the acting Governor of Nebraska has been compelled to imae, 111LOIM 'tbit, ha has truly fallen among thine& - These letter breakers are the men to vindicate ”popular sovereignty:" • To vas Crrizzas or NaBILSOMAZ Being apprised that letters written by me have been taken from the ,mails by some desperate individuals, end words or lines forged la them, over my eignatare for political purposea; and that said letters are now being circulated and confidently used in mis leading and deceiving the people of the Territory, I take this method arraying that no letters have been written by me the true content' of which am unwilling to make public; and I espectfully urge citizens to put no trust in any such base electioneering frauds and forgeries, conoocted at the eleventh boor to create local excitements, but to vote without regard to them for men and principles worthy of a Territory_ for which so much has been suffered, lad of which eo much is anticipated. Fr=lts v. wart. Dolly Admtlaar Tan Dew:seams to Tacna.—lnquiries &thong some of-the prominent. branches of manufactu rers, lead to the estimate that about one third of the men usually employed have been discharged, and that the remainder are kept on about half work. - The total number who are idle, it is esti mated, cannot probably be leis, Including ap psentices awl sewing girls, than 3,ooo—the num ber which has recently been stated' in several quarters. Wages have not undergone any ma terial reduction, and among some classes of mechanics there is a disposition to keep up the standard even at the expense of lying idle, rath er. than to work at reduced wages. In Nome shops the fall complements of hands has been retained; and what work there is divided among them, giving all A small portion, but the general practice is to discharge a number, in order that the remainder may have their time more fully occupied. In the jewelry mann.factmies it is estimated that one-third leas hands are employed, throwing about 800 out of work. The clothing manufacturers are holding op for the spring trade, and at present doing nothing. A leading manufacturer calculates that 1000 tailors ane sew ing girls are idle. In the hotting business one-third of the hands • have been discharged. This manufacture usu ally employs several hundred workmen with a large number of girls. Among the harness makers there are no large orders coining forward. The business Is usually very heavy It oar city. Ira onelarge carriage factory, the hands have leen reduced more than one half and only single orders are (*mist forward. The condition of this business, which is also of great Importance, resembles the others. Plating, brass working, coaeh lamp making, &a, being also branches dependent on this, har ness makers and others are similarly affected. The shoe business usually employs a 'great number in small shops, and a large number aro vainly reeking work. In the patent leather manufacture about two hundred are ant of employment, Heretofore the factories hare scarcely been . ' able to supply the demand on them, and the Nosiness has been ex ceedingly prosperous. There is note largo stook on hand, and although , the orders are not at pres ent larpolome activity prevails in supplying what is needed for immediate consumption. The leather business is less affected than some others, being . of a more staple character. It feels the prevailing dullness, but the workmen are generally retained on about half employment The soap and candle business, and several oth era, are also as good as usual, from some pectili arity.of their character. Thus, in the farmer, the winter Is always the 'more active season, oil account of the Impossibility of manufacturing in hot weather. , There Is but little building going forward, eszeptyhe completion of some houses commenced during the past season. For a year past, however, builders have not been so much, occupied as during the year or two preceding, as upitallste have not chosen to invest their money in this manner, material and labor haring been so expends" Gen: Webb, through the columns of the Cour lerand Enquirer, reiterates hie belief that be fore the let of January, Sebastopol will hare fall en.
