'We do not charge him with beieg either a " fool," " knave': or "liar.", Men who use such genteel epithets, so dignified in a member of Congress, should, however, have good 'memories.. Mr. Trout evi dently has a poor one, for the Pittsburgh Ga• tette did net state that he "voted in favor jo,/ yiny'aside all other business to take up the Klin g:lS-Nebraska bill with a vien to its immedattzi nausea." , What was said in the Gazette, in an article copied fronfthe New. York Tribune, was the following:—. The . representatives from the Free States named below, voted on Monday week to take up the Kansas Nebraska bill with a view to urge its immediate passage.", This statement is- substantially true, as will appear on examintition. On the Bth of May, Mr. Richardion, purnoint to precious notice, well . known to Mr. Trout, moved that the . House re solie itself into Cotimittee of the Whole, on the. mate of the Union, for an especial purpose, te•hicii.Zeas to lay aside all 'other bneinese on the ca lendar until the Kanecte-Nebiareka bill sew reached. For this motion, made by Mr. Richardson, the leader of the Nebraska party, Mr. TROUT voted! This vote.vias considered and underitood in - the House to be a test notation. If Mr. Richardson failed in his motion; the victory was on the side of freedom. If be succeeded, nothing could pre vent the bill coming Up. And so it proved. Mr. Richardson's motion; by the aid of such men as Trout and Drum, prevailed, and the.coaspiratont against the peace of The country had everything their own way. Why did Mr. Trout desert the friends of freedom at this critical moment?— How could his vote bo interpreted but as favor ing the outrage on Northern rights 7 Mr. Rich ardson and the slaveholders say, "we will go into committee for a certain purpose." Tho friends of freedoeisay, "you shall do no such thing." The struggle takes place, and Mr. Trout 'rotes with the slaveholdere ! Mr. Tiont knew that the lanes-Nebraska bill.was beyend the reach of the conspirators, unless reached by some such ruse as that of Mr. Richardson's, and yetf not withskuiding the object was boldly avowed, he fell into the trap ignorantly, or jumped into it willingly. If ignorantly, he is unfit for the place; if willfolly, he betrayed his constituents while endeavoring to tlecive them, by voting right when his vote was not needed by the conspira tors. It is charitable to believe that Mr. Trout is sincere, and that -he did - not understand the nature of his vote. llf this is true, it is strange that be has not Vetere this discovered his eggre , glom error. ; I • . I - we have thus shown that we did not lay what Mr. .Trout alleges, and that what we did say was substantially correct.; for Mr. Trout did vote to go into committee for thepurpose of taking up the Nebraska bill; for that was the avowed purpose of going into committee. was in effect vo ting to take it up, for the result of going into committee was just as Mr. Richardson content 'plated. Mr. Trout: admits that.. he wanted to "face the music ".although:he knew that the only hope the friends of freedom had, was in the advantage which the rules of the Rouse gave them, until, the voice of people ;became sufficiently potent to make itself heard. Now we will leave the constituents of Mr. Trout to de cide whether the choice:epithets h,e so liberally deals in, belong to himself or to us. • Mr. Trout makes another charge against no, couched ut his charecteristically polite and clas sic:id prhaaeologY, 'as follows : "There is another matter which I hardly think worth while to notice, but perhaps I bad better. I have been charged by the 1111 g and Pittsburgh Gazette, and rather papers, with voting to stifle discussion. This is simply nets:ue. It is a ma licious falsehood, Manufactured out of whole cloth, and the man who - utters it is a base liar and malicious scouodrel. * * * Stifle discussion The man must be a great liar and malicious scoundrel who will state that I voted to stifle discussion. The question had to be met, and had it been met at the threshhold, Could have been defeated, soil it was gaining strength every day. What would you think of a general, who knew he would bare to give battle to an enemy, and while - he saw his soldiers every day deserting him. and going over to the enemy:would rest at his ease and refuse to grapple with the foe at once. I shrank from no responsibility—l was willing to face thi music." Well, let us see Low the gwitleman ”faced the mode." Mr. Itichardso n, by the aid of such men as Trout and Pram, having succeeded in 'going into Conimittee, and having the bill before the House, next moved to close the debate.-- Then commenced thatlong struggle of the friends of freedom, whichlasted at one time for thirty , six hours without adjournment,- and was renew ed after a short internd of rest, until the House adjourned on Saturday night, leaving the friends of freedom still victorious. 'Our readers will re collect with what anxiety all eyes were turned to Washington to learn the final result. The cense of freedom was trembling in the balance. * ln this extremity the. Democrats held a caucus on Saturday night, which Mr. Trout attended. On Monday, when the House met, Mr. Richardson and his follow conspirators appeared with smi ling feces, the rote was talren,,. and the victory was again with the Nebrashaites. The discus slow, it was voted, should close on Friday; and Mr. Trent again voted with Mr. Richardson and the slaveltolders. He voted, as we say, "to sti tle discussion." He voted to stop discussion, he says, because he wanted to "face the rausic."---' -A brave man„. truly! He wanted , to "face the music" after contributing to the loss of the bat tle. lt was safe to "face the music," then. On this point a fierce struggle-arose; and when the yeas and nays were called there were fauittl to be 35 nays. The Committee, we believe, wtui composed of a ma- . jority of anti-Bigler men; and when the resolu tions came before the convention there seem ed -to -be great doubt whether • they had the endorsement of the committee, the gen eral Impression being that they had not.— After a very exciting and angry contest, the Convention was brought, to decide upon the reso lutions, and the division showed 60 in their favor to 30 against. They or course enduise Bigler, bat the fact that, at this late stage of the can vass, and in such a County as this, three-eights of a democratic convention could bo brought to vote against the nominee of the party for Gover nor, shows a very deep and wide-spread hostility 'to him in his own ranks. The Post of this morning, we understand, will say that the Convention was harmonious and that every thing passed off happily; and all that; but the fact is nevertheless notorious that it was the most noisy and violent assemblage of the kind ever gathered in this County. With regard to the ticket nominated we shall have mereto say hereafter. We do not regard it as havintanyelements of strength or any pos sibility of success. • THE FUSION in Cuyahoga county, 0., is most complete and harmonious: A convention met last week in Cleveland and nominated a County Ticket composed of men who had previously be hinged to Whigs, Free Boilers and Democrats. Tan PESMITLVeLCIA Patator published at Harrisburg, states that the recent Free Demo cratic State Contention at which Mr. Potts' name as a Gubernatorial candidate was with drawn, and Mr. Pollock's substituted, was held clandestinely, or at all events, that no person seemed to be aware of such a meeting. It was uo doubt managed by a few political wire workers.
