Why is it that here they enjoy so much greater freedom than in those countries where the priestly power is Su preme! ,Why do they obtain higher wages, live more comfortable, and enjoy the hundreds of mi nor blessings which every perstm has showered frecely upon him in this favored land l . The fact that they never do ask themselves ouch questions shows their profound ignorance 1 and blindness. It to SO absurd to see Papists trying in ettry way to break - down the ,very power whose sid and protection they have tome so far to enjoy, have perilled eo much tosecure. There have been, to be sure, some avalanches from the Alps of iniquity, but still the evil is al most universal, and the clouds of ignorance. are far too dense. Ile intended, he remarked, to give a popular view of Popery, rather than to attempt any crit ical exposition of its- principles. 'While survey tug the progress of Popery about .us, we desire, first, to ascertain in what originated the system of Privity. It originated, he u.rged, in th - c depravity of the human heart. In the system is blended supersti- Lion. selfishness; despotism, corruption.--till weaved tegether so shrewdly- that it has been called Satan's master-work. As a powerful eys tem- it has no parallel hi the history of religion. For three centuries after the death of Christ the principles of the gospel spread most eaten sleety. Paganism made way for the peaceful I truths of true religion. and its power spread throughout the civilized world. So rapid was its progress,: so complete its triumph, that in the year 8211 Paganism as a smtem was abolished, and true religion founded on its ruins. But Se tan, finding his power thus rapidly waning in the world; endeavored to build up new dominions in the church itself. With its increase of power, I the church loit its spirituality. The scat of I Christianity wan at Rome, and thence emanated the laws that governed !he civilized world. As curly as in the second century, the first germs of Popery were observed, and Paul, in some of his epistles, alludes to some of these germs, and warns the primitive disciples against these very evils which have since wrought such evil. The vital Interests of religion lost their power in the observance of minor acts of worship. Form and ceremonies began to assume far too much impor tance in the minds of many. Other innovations were made t*athstilly, and time, one by one, the I errors crept in slowly but surely. To the time of the ascension of Constantine, however, the apostles were devoutly,,devoted to the cause of •Christ,. maintaining the faith of. Jesus in purify and power. The Papists, as is well known, trace the origin of-their religion to itt. Peter. It is clearly proved, however, by the character of the Christians for the first three centurion, by their boldness in offirroipg, the love of Christ, and their, great endurnnee in fur thering the blessed work of redemption, that the system of error did:net eclipse true religion Until the 9th century.' 'The small rivulets of error which had been flowing into the church Bien became larger and rolled in a huge torrent of evils which well nigh overwhelmed the world. The fair heritage of Ged was changed into a wilderness, with here and there a small oasis.— A great moral desert existed. , - The simple institutions of Christ were forced to make place for foolish Innovations. 'lice Tat eretice due to Christ was transferred to the cross on which he hung; the holy men of old Ng elle forgotten in admiration for their clothes; a pil grimage to Jerusalem was - deemed far mere mer itorious than to follow the example of Jesus.— Relies were considered all efficacious for salva tion; while Christ's laws and precepts were cast aside. A stronger desire was felt, to stand in ' Christ's tomb than to seek solution by his blood. "Tun LONDON Ttaxs.r—The London corres pondent of the Boston Post gives the following inforinction relative to the Times Newsmen "It may seem very strange to an American that no other newspaper in England, none other intact in Europe, can bring to its support an ar ray of talent at all comparable to the Times; but it is,novertheless true. Other newspapers may receive the highest government patronage, may be supported. by all the strength of public sin- , tiniest, may enlist the cleverest men of the age as thiAr contributors, may •lM backed by an al most exhaustless amount of capitol, and be con• ducted by' the most sagacious men of the land. but they fail both to come up to the standard of the Times, and to commandin an equal degree the public attention. flow long this pre-emi nence may be held by that paper, it is impossi ble to conjecture. As everything human is mutable, the'day will probably come-when the proud position it occu pies will be disputed by :moccasinl rivals; but to all appearance that day is far off. Its corps of .Editors, or reporters, of foreign ' and domestic correspondents and of managers constitute an itr my—not one individual of whom everncknowl edges his connection with that paper. Itis often whispered at . public dinners and other gatherings, that such and such a person connected with the Times is Present, but the individual . Who will confess to the soft-impeachment is never found. The alai nominir umbra of the editor of the Times, Is as impenetrable as the author of Junius.. It Is saidAllat no one person claims that . ition— that its - readers are written for a s dated sum by men who never enter its sanctum, and that more communications from the, firsewriters- of Great Britain are rejected from its columns than arc furnished for all the other papers and peri odicals in the kingdom. TILLT LETTLII AGAIN' CA-LLtD Fon.—Now that the Bedford Chronicle has fastened en John Chambers that he made the declaration at that place that be bad in his pocket a letter from Gov. Bigler on the subject of the Prohibi tory Liquor Law, it is to be hoped that we shall have no further exhibition of double-shuffling on his part of the subject, and that he will forthwith produce it, so that the publie may read. and 'judge for itself. This is especially duo new by him, titan, .even those journals which support •Gov. Bigler are uniting with the Whig papers in demanding its publication. That this is the case and that these, Imo Foco journals' have their reasons for so doing, - we need but refer the Reverend gentleman to the. following extract of an editorial leader taken from - the Barks County •Democratio Press, which has Gov. Bigler - at the head of its columns for re-election: - - "The Governor's friends in this county have ever considered him an opponent . of a prohibito ry liquor law. It is now claimed that he has made a 'consdant of the Rev. John Chambers, who is the life of the liquor law party, endTbo declares himself a personal mad political-friend of Bigler. It would therefore be but, .simple justice on his part to publish the letter, and al low the Governor's fmends to' see it. We can assure Gov. Bigler's friends in other Places, that there are many Democrats in Becks county who wish to see the letter before they advance furth er, and who will judge. Gov. Bigler by his own Merits. and not by what the fanatic Chambers,' wishes to say, of his future acts and intentions. Neither will they be misled by such an editorial en behalf of Mr. Chambers as the Gazette puts forth. They wish to know, in , plain terms, whether the present incumbent is for or against the prohibitory law." . TISK DOI - GLASS AT Hons.—Senator Douglass seems to have had poor success in obtaining from his fellow citizens at Chicago an endorsement of his Nebraska bill. His attempt to enlighten them in regard to its merits, was not fortunate. Pos sibly they may have decreed themselves already tolerably familiar With the subject, and not in any special need, therefore, of the Senator's illu mination. at all events they did not incline to hear him, and whenever he began to speak, found it so necessary to engage in conversation on their own affairs, as completely to drown his voice. They musthave conversed in tones above a whisper, certainly, for the Senator, like the Katydids, has a. voice much .larger than his body and is not easily out talked or over-bellow ed. Dot in this case the citizens of Chicago were too much for him. • It would not be strange if there should be in. Chicago and throughout Illinois, a strong feeling of personal indignation towards the Senator who has so outraged the public sentiment, and so grosslybbtrayed their interests and Misrepresen ted their opinions. The Clergy of Chicago, we presume, will bear in mind for a long time,, the insolence of the censures with which he attempt ed to rebuke their expressions of opinion con cerning the Nebraska bill. • . . _ Tho thing in ourjudgemont, which Sen ator tlipilliss can do, is to keep just as quiet as possibTe..
