ORNING, JULY 25, 1854 PITTSBURGH TCfiinAY bIORNING, . Gaits Pereha. The following article is condensed from the New York Day Book. The facts it contains ore exceedingly ! Interesting, and we. presume will be new to most of our readers: _ Gutta Pircha=the Malayan term! given •to a 'concrete juice taken from .the sonandra Gutta Percha-tree—is indigenus to all the - islands of the Indian Archipelago, add especially to the Maylayan!Penintmla, Borneo, Ceylon, and their neighborhoods, in which are found immense for- este of this tree, all yielding this product in great j _abundance- Its fruit contains aconciete edible oil, which is used by the natives with their food. The gutta, or juice, circulates between the bark and wood of the tree, in veins whose course isdistinetlymarked b 4 black longitudinal lines. The natives were formerly in the habit of peel ing thotree when they required a supply, but :have been taught by experience that the juice Can bo obtained by cutting notches at internals in the trunk, and thus preserve the tree for fu!: taro tappings, as our maples for ouccessiveyears yield their septa the sugar manufacturers. The juice consolidates inn few minate.s.after it is collected, when it is fanned by hand into coin ',net oblong masses of from seven to twelve or eighteen inches in length, by four to six inches iu thiekness; and these, when properly dried, are whatis known as the Gotta Partia of commerce. Ilia of a light brown color, exhibiting a fibrous appearance, much like the inner coating of the ! white oak bark, and is without' elasticity. When purified of its woody . and earthy-substance, it beCOmes hard, like horn, andis extremely tena cious; indeed, its tenacity is wonderful. The strength of tubes of this material is so great that no visible effect was produced upon them by the proving -pump of the Water Compd . n a y of the: city,of Stirling. in Scotland, which gives more presiire than any otherpump in Great Britain--a pressure that would scatter the rivets of leather hose in all directions. The application of-beat to the crude material makes - it soft andplastic, and in a temperature of about!twoliuritired degr.ees it becomes ductile,, when it can he moulded into any desired shape, ! which it tete:it/althea cool; It can he dissolved by selphutet of carbon, or chloroform, or if im •mersed for a , time in spirits of turpentine. It is a'rmiellant of and completely unaffected by cold water, and, unlike - fmila rubber, it resists the action of oil and other fatty substances without !injury. It is n non-conductor of electricity; ,it is proof against alkalies and acids,—being only affected by the sulphuric end nitric, in a highly j concentrated state, while ths most powerful acet ic, Itydrolleric, or muriatic acids, or chlorine, have no perceptible effect upon its structure, or espabilities. This gum has qualities entirely different from India-robber. It cannot be-worn ! out. It can be melted and remelted, and repeat edly remoulded, without changing its properties for manufacture, Or losing its virtue. Itis light. er than robber, of finer grain, and posseiniescer tain repellant properties unknown to that mate rial; and is extremely tough. It disregards frost, end displays remarkable'acotiatic qualities,- - The experiments - which resulted in the asteun ding disisivery of a process of vulcanization, by which Gotta Percha was made permanently elas tic and flexible, like India rubber (contrary to the conclusion of all other experiments, in this country and In Europe,) and which have remov ed the objections to most Gotta Percha articles which Lad existed from the beginning, viz: non elasticity and rigidity, variableness and extreme sendbility to heat and:cold—were made by.tViii: Eider, of the firm of W. Rider and Brothers,' now the President of the North Amer:Man' Gotta Percha Company, and his brothers, Emory and John Bider, who had for years been engaged in experiments. with India rubber . ' (wh i ch resulted. in the vidcation as patented by Goodyear.) No time was lost in making application for a patent, which was granted. k Under this discovery, Gotta Percha, which before win fibrous, non-elastic and briny mate rial, and effmted by the changes of elimato, is converted into pliable sad elastic fabrics, which remain the same !under all changes, of climate;. is ' not injeired acids or fatty substances, is free. ,from offenalver emell. - anef, unlike India rubber,., does hot decompose aid got sticky; with such. advantages this invention must prove one of vast I . importance in the arts. As the discovery presented a field for business beyond the means of any individual or firm, it. yea deemed Advisable to vest the right to the I fame in • company. ACconlingly the , North American Gotta Percha Company was incorpo rated, under the General Manufacturing law of the State of New York, to be under the roarago ment of -n. Board of Trustees, with acapital of five_ hundred thousand dollars, divided into shares of one hundred &Bars tech. - The Company Love extensive establishment in Twenty-fifth street, in this city; covering eight lots of ground : their machinery is of The most l'opproveol make, and very ponderous, weighing over ono hundred thousand pounds, which Is driven by a splendid engine of one hun- I dred horse power. The cutting, eleansidg,• mixing, grinding., cal lentlering end vulcanizing rooms are all arranged with regard to the economical despatch oflasi nese-.om working rooms are light and airy, and I the whole establishment is 14,, , hted.with gas. The establishment. employs about two hundred fe males, and fifty men andboys, can turn out six hundred thousand dollars worth of &oda per The colloquy between Senators Benjamin and Sumner, to.day, ire. of marked importance,— :qr. Mr."S. replied, Yankee . fashion , - *.by au interrogation—a .very proper course under the circumstance-s--asking the Senator from Louisiana whether or no the lain o 7 Sonth Carolina and .Louisisna, under which the caloret citizens of Massachusetts may be seised and thrown into prison there, and eventually sold, for jail feeainto absolute Slavery, were nonstitittional. , Mr. Betjatain tnetnntly responded.; frank 2 admitting that those kin tllloolllltiltaiol3 This Important pdmisaion elicited, Mr. Sumner folloied up his advantage by asking the Senator Whether Jut wae.niady to bring in a law enforcing the conetitntlonal provision guaranteeing to the citizens of one State all the privileges and immu nities of a citizen in every other State. Mr. B. declined to be further Interrogated, clalmingthat the Senator from Massachusetta had= right to make him a witness opop, the stand. It la Important that ode or -two idea . * in con nection with this subject should be Impressed upoo the public mind. Mr. Sumner was per. fectly entitled to an Ammer to the questions' he propounded. The object of the Senator from Louisiana evidently was to 'draw from Senator Sumter a refuel to recognize any constitutional obligation to deliver up fugitive eaves; end-if he had succeeded In obtaining ouch LA avowal, it was designed to be presented to the country as the justification of the abuse to which the Sena tor from Mturmebneetta has been subjected under cover Of tho charge that . be Is ready to violate Ids oath to support the Constitution. • The clause of the Constitution rcdating to the delivery of Fugitive Stoves; is contained in the 4th article. The first clans° of the same section stipulates that "the rititens of each State chill be entitled Mill privileges and immunities of cit izens in the Niteroi States." That provision of the Constitution le notoriously nullified by stat utes both In Louisiana and South 'Carolina. These States defy the Constitution boldly; and go en far ai to Interpose "respectable" mob law, to prevent the test of the question of constitu tionality by tbe'legal tribunate, under tho plea that the 'higher law' of self-protection requires them to magitain the • statutes complained of, Constitution or-no Constitution. Now every just men must see that gentletden who undertake to lecture their colleagnea for declining to under"- stood a debateable clause of the Conetitutionjust as the lecturers choose to understand -It, arc bound to be free from suipieloet themselves of refusing obedience to another clause of the same instrument, about the meaning of which there can scarcely be any controversy. Mr. Benjanifn admits the unconstitutionality of the.Lontslana and South'Carolina law in the point In:question, and. Mr. Sumner was fully en titled to test the sincerity of his fealty to the Constitution, by inquiring whether ho was ready to enact a law preventing _a violation of that in etrumeot. Mr. Sumner wee quite ready to an swer the interrogatory pnt to him, and made strenuous4orts to get the floor for that pur pose; but Southern Scuttling refused him the op portunity to do so under the rules of the body. As the ease now elands, however, Mr. BerOcoln admits the Louhdana violation of the-Conetitu lion; and refusett to declare hie willingtiess tore ' pair the breach; It becomes a serious. quotation, whether the Colon-91m glorious Union"—isn't in minions danger of immediate collapse.—Wash.
