Nothing was inew detaining them but the np pmerance of the b teenier Tluonas Hunt, which had leen chartered to tow the craft, with her freight of "glory," out 'to the bends. At fire minutes after one, her lights displayed themselves us the rounded the end of the Pacific wharf and op preached the sceue of excitement and hope.— The steamer crept slowly alongside, and her haw sers were made fast to the barque. A delay of fifteen minutes followed. . . . The order was then given to let go the b w and 1 rturn lines; the ominous bell of the sten r wns heard ringing from the engine-room; the e aping steam was shutoff; the paddles commenc mo ving. and the two crafts swept gallantly o ff.— First there came three deers for the new pub lic from those left behind , followed by th e and ti " tiger" from the hive of human beings the deck of the barque...closed by indiscriminate out ings and cheers. --, The longue that took the party is cntled the Anita, and she is bound for the locos in quo of President Walker's men. We publish below a Nery interesting corres pondence between John C. Montgomery, Esq.. of this city, and the president of the Central Railroad, in relation to the tar imposed by an act of the State Legislature - upon the tonnage of that work. The letter of Mr. Thompson ex plains, in a very satishietory manner the inju rious operation of the law, and as 'the question of its repeal will be brought before the As sembly at its approaching session, we hope the stiong and conclusive reasons urged against th. ctinuance of the obnoiious impost will be as rely read and appreciated. It should be a stifficient arguinent •in favor of the, abrogation o 4 the statute, that the apprehended lots to the. Slide, which is alleged to have been the motive that led to its enactment Itas'not occurred. So fur from any diminution of the business and revenues of the public works baying been occa sioned by the competition of the Central road, they have grown in. amount; and it is, therefore, obviously unjust 'to perpetuate en act which wits passed iu anticipation of a directly opposite' result. • Moreover, as the effect of the measure in practical operation is to put a restriction on the immediate trade and industry of Pennsyliania, patriotic feeling lind a. wise domestic policy both powerfully recommend its instant revocation.= As stated by Mr. Thompson, it is the local busi ness of the Pennsylvania Railroad which has and roust continue to•suffer from this three mill tonnage tax. The competition with the rival improvements of New York and Maryland, for the commerce of the West must necessarily keep the rates of freight on that trade passing over our Central line, independent of and ex empt from the operation of the charge imposed by the State, while, in order to meet it, the pri ces of transportation must be proportionately, raised On. the local business of the Company, t N thereby throwing on the citizens of e Com monwealth a burden) of toll for the it of their produce and merchandise over one I ' their 81,,w own improvements not only equivalent the tax complained of, but as mach voider ei..i \ e low freight tariffs of competing , roe coin l Directors of the Pennsylvania railway rodn theirs below what they consider es. to k standard of profit to the stockh:• \ l` e . Company should be required, as a condition of the repeal, to reduce their charges below the published rates of 1855, at least twenty-five per cent more than the whole amount of taxi.that the citizens of the State, and not the Penitsylva nia Railroad copany may receive the direct benefits therefro ps; subject to which condition we humbly pray your honorable bodies to repeal the tax." ' I have assurid my friend that It is difficult to imagine how the plain and obvious meaning of the object of the memoiial could be so strangely misapprehended-41nd, in my opinion, - the repeal of the tax would Operate almost exeltislitelyupoti the 'Way freight," and that the "through freight would not be sensibly affected by the change-- that the design of the Pennsylvania Railroad Company unquestionably was to benefit the cid- semi of our State at large, and that the directors of our great improvement, should they patrioti cally consent to legislation that would require them to reduce the charges on "way freight" 'At least 25 per centum below the amount of tax la k e oppressive to the people of this State, would hope to be compensated by the increased =Mita, of tonnage upon their road, while at the same time they would be enabled to confer it&litional benefits and blessings upon the producitesses of our community. \ ' ;It has occurred to me, however, that i‘ e mild bd more satisfactory to those - who en fain certain doubts upon this subject, to receiv e he requisite information directly from head-quzute ; I,!therefore, appeal to you, in:Your official alp • city, to give me your ownnterpretation of - language of the memorial, with penniasion , make-whatever use of your 7oninuaication ma be deemed advisable. t. ~.. _.: With high personal regard, Ong a r d en t ": ‘ °" „. es for the continued success and prosperity of the improvement which you \have Managed 'so skit,- fully, I am; my dear sir, very sinerelir yours, \ ' .
