MILNOI3. Reiman; U contained in a report to the Bellefontaine and Indiana Railroad Company, an extract from which was pi:Mitoticoln that paper. The Object of the Gazette, as iderly as we could judge;,siras to create the impression that.this roil:Larks italiat extract, would convey to the mind oY the reader more oorreot idea of the route of the road than any description founded on actual surveys made sifterwerda. Mer. R. wax absent from the city at the time, and had no connection with the con troversy. Since his return; we have taken octets elan to sell his attention to the' eironmetanctie attending the petblication alluded to; and have derived from Inta, In a few words, what we think II a correct vied of this paint. which, In justice to 'that gentleman and to the Pittsburgh and Steubenville Company, we shall state. . If the editor of the Gazette will read the whole report of-me/ Bellefontaine Company, he will God that the portion from which his extract is taken 'refers to a then anticipated rivalry be tween the Ohio and Pennsylvania and the Steu benville and Indiana Roads, and.the extension of the latter, then' contemplated, between Sten. benvillo and Pittsburgh; and in referring to the proposed route between Steubenville . and Pitts burgh he epike of the country as being "very hilly," "five or Mx hundred feet, bigh;" and sug gested "that the very hilly nate= of Washing ton and Alleitheninountien joined to the diffi culty and the expense of creasing the Ohio and Monongahela tivernliendered that part of the project rather unprotaLsing;" remarking, farther, "that a straight line was entirely impracticable," and "that the expense 'and amount of ascent and descent waned probably impel those interested to seek a more circnitou.s connection with Pitts burgh, along the right bank of the Ohio river to Wellsville, and intersecting the Ohio and Penis .eylvania Railroad at Beaver. 25 miles below Pittsburgh." It is obvious from the entire tenor of theSe remarks that they were not based on any sir 'eye, and that they were notintended to be ec understood; but that they were mertly,an ex. pres.sion of the very general impressions which. then existed, for the consideration and examine. clans of parties in Ohio looking to connections with Pittsburgh. Some time afterwards, this gentleman was called upon ' as Consulting Engineer of the Pitts .." burgh and Steubenville Railroad Company, to make n prates:anoint examination a this very country.. which , he did in =jou:lotion with Mr. David Mitchell, Jr., the present worthy' Chief Engineer, in tt most thorough manner. And what did he find ? Any contradiction of obit pets stated in his Ohio report? No. The country between Pittsburgh and Steubenville is "very hilly," the ridges are " fir/ or six hundtgil feet above the river," and the line adopted is by no means straight, though it is 25 miles shorter than the river route. Tet, over this country a route eras traced with =yam= grades the same as the Pennejlisnit Road, where it leaves- this city, namely, 62 8.10 feet per mile, and entirely practicable at a len cost per mile than eastern roads generally. Bat these 'were not the only elements which entered into his calculations —1 Ile found that' the line premed through a mag nificent ogricaltural country, -embracing within the =me area a very extensive and valuable re gion abounding in cost of the very beet quality ; and that the descending grades preponderated to wards two important pointcon the river-;--Stea benville and Pittsburgh. The local trade of the route, combined with its position as the shortest . connecting. link is the • great chain ' of ease , nd west Vailroadr, warranted him, as Mr. 1i thought, and Oil thinks, in presenting that route froratia to the investigations of et/pita/Ista, as a !leper field for the investment of railroad capital. Moro than a year has elapsed elute "Mr. IL has had any professional connection with the Pittsburgh and Steubenville road, but his present opinions in relation to it, and Its pros ' pests, are those to be found in the only reports he made after having carefully .examined the country. , Tax Near CSSOMIL—The erulp'ect of the Speskership of the, eat Coerces is attracting .ome attention aoog'politicises.
